3 Overview As part of the ongoing Scottish Accommodation Occupancy Survey (SAOS) contract, The Moffat Centre, commissioned by VisitScotland, is continuing to produce monthly and quarterly outputs. This third quarterly report for 2017 forms part of the agreed outputs. Executive Summary This report provides the third performance indicators from the Moffat Centre in provision of the Scottish Accommodation Occupancy survey. Tourism performance to date (July to September 2017), shows growth in performance in almost all sectors and geographical regions. The continued good value proposition of Scottish tourism continues to help the appeal of destination Scotland in a busy competitive marketplace. As pressure on UK Sterling continues, the key European, US and other International markets find the currency advantage distinctly attractive. Domestic visitation appears strong as 'staycation' appeal is extended by the weaker buying power of UK Sterling overseas. Hotel accommodation performance has been strong in all locations in terms of room occupancy. However, The Highlands, Orkney, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ayrshire merit particular mention given their record of achieving in excess of 88% room occupancy. In urban, rural and coastal destinations, performance has been good and the higher tariff offers are seen to be particularly attractive (further reinforcing the exchange rate appeal). The source of reservations reinforces the importance of online consolidators a trend seen in almost all accommodation providers. Guesthouses and B&Bs similarly evidence buoyant demand (in excess of 75% room occupancy), with similar strong appeal evident in higher tariff brackets Self Catering and Hostels. Also evident is considerable appeal with quality, premium priced offers outperforming other segments. Once again the role of online reservations channels is visible here. The continued presence of South East Asian and South Asian tourists is apparent, coupled with positive European and US levels of visitation has helped drive demand for Scottish accommodation almost all sectors. The message remains clear; quality remains critical in a price elastic internationally buoyant market.
