Transcription

1 Alan Godfrey maps are reprints of Old Ordnance Survey Maps. They are based on either 25" (or 1:2,500) plans, reduced to 15" to the mile, or Inch to the Mile maps. As all these maps predate the Second World War, they show the configuration of streets before bomb damage, after which many streets in Belfast were lost. Each map includes a history of the area, and some include extracts from contemporary directories. Co. Antrim Co. Antrim Sheet Ballymena 1903 This very detailed map covers much of Ballymena, including the town centre. Coverage stretches from the station eastwards to the Braid River, and from the Union Workhouse southwards to Harryville Bridge. Note that most of Harryville is off the map. The map covers the town centre with houses and other buildings all neatly delineated; The Castle, Braid Water Mills, station including narrow gauge line, Market Place, Fair Green, Town Parks area, Recreation Ground, Court House, Adair Arms Hotel, weaving factory, McClurkanstown, St Patrick's church, Kintullagh House, District Model School, People's Park, cottage hospital etc. A list of private inhabitants from a contemporary directory is included. Co. Antrim Sheet Larne 1903 This very detailed map covers the important harbour town of Larne. Most of the town is covered on this busy map and major features include the Harbour railway station and the two town stations. Other features include the northern part of Inver (around the stations), Inver Mill, Market Place, Invermore, Bleach & Dye Works, Pound Street, Main Street, Union Workhouse, McGarel Buildings, Linen Weaving Factory, Aluminium Works, Curran House, Olderfleet Hotel, Chaine Monument, Drumalis (or Drumaliss) and much more. The list of inhabitants from a 1904 directory is included on the reverse. Co. Antrim sheet Ballyclare 1902 This detailed map gives good coverage of the town of Ballyclare. The entire town centre is shown in detail, with individual buildings neatly delineated. Features include both railways with stations, Ballyclare Bleach Works, Green House, Millvale, Ballyclare Foundry, Market Square, Town Hall, Fairview, Cogry, Claughlin, churches, etc. On the reverse is a 1905 directory of Ballyclare. Co. Antrim Sheet Belfast (Oldpark & Ligoniel) 1901 This very detailed map covers what was then a largely rural area of NW Belfast, with coverage extending from St Mark's Church Legoniel eastwards to Carr's Glen Reservoir, and southwards to Lower Lodge Factory and Old Park Brick Works. Features on the map include Ballysillan House, Everton House, damask manufactory, The Forster Green Home, Glenbank Bleach Works, Belfast Water Works, Ballysillan Presbyterian church, Glenbank House, St Mark's church, Old Park Print Works, football and cricket grounds, Monkeystown, Old Park Post Office etc. On the reverse are street directory entries for Ligoniel Road, Old Park Avenue and Oldpark Road, plus an extract from a contemporary 6 inch map, giving slightly wider coverage of the Legoniel area. 2 Co. Antrim Sheet Belfast (Shankill) 1901 This very detailed map covers a busy area of North West Belfast, including the Crumlin Road, Shankill Road and Woodvale Road area. Coverage stretches from Agnes Street westwards to Ballygomartin Road and from Ardilea Street southwards to Conway Street and Cupar Street Factory. Features on the map include Shankill Road, Lawnbrook Weaving Factory, Glenwood Mill, Cupar Street Factory, Springfield School, Springfield Bleach Works, Forth River Brick Works, bleach greens, Springhill, Brookfield Weaving Factory, Woodvale Park, Edenderry Mill, Belfast Foundry, Crumlin Road, Parkview Brick Works, Ballygomartin Road, Glenview, Glencairn, Crumlin Road Flax Mill, Brookfield Flax Spinning Mill, Rosebank Factory, Holy Cross RC Chapel, Edenderry House, Ardoyne house, St Mary's church, Manor Hall, tramways, with many streets of mostly terraced houses, all neatly delineated. Antrim Sheet The Falls 1931 This very detailed map covers much of west Belfast, especially the area around the Falls Road. Coverage stretches from Roden Street westwards to Whiterock Road and Falls Park, and from Cupar Street southwards to Donegall Road. Features on the map include Skegoneill Brick Works, railway with engine shed and carriage shed, Fort William, Jennymount Flax Spinning Mill, Dock Building Work, tramways, Ulster Timber Depot, The Grove, Antrim Road area with houses neatly shown, Reservoir, Hopefield House, Alexandra Park, Holy Family RC Church, Dunmore, Limestone Road, Fortwilliam Park Presbyterian Church, Chichester Park etc. On the reverse are street directory entries for Antrim Road, Fortwilliam Parade and Fortwilliam Park. Antrim Sheet North Belfast 1920 This very detailed map covers a busy area of north central Belfast, including several of the docks. Coverage stretches from Clifton Park Avenue eastwards to Spencer Dock and Albert Quay, and from Limestone Road and Mountcollyer Road southwards to North Street and Albert Square. Note that the small area of Co. Down east of the Lagan is left blank. Antrim Sheet Central Belfast 1931 This very detailed map covers the central area of Belfast, with coverage stretching from Distillery Street eastwards to Albert Bridge, and from Smithfield southwards to Cromwell Road. Note that the Co. Down area east of the Lagan is left blank. Features shown include City Hall, Donegall Place, Donegall Square, Great Victoria Street area, Great Victoria Street terminus with sidings and goods sheds, Belfast Central Branch, Queen's Bridge station, tramways, Ulster Hall, Royal Belfast Academical Institution, Crescent Presbyterian Church, Linfield Factory, Ulster Linen Works, weaving factories, gas works, Mays Market, St George's Market, other markets, Royal Courts of Justice, Victoria Square, cinemas, Shaftesbury Square area, Sandy Row area, Grand Opera House, Cromac Square, with many streets of terraced houses, intermixed with weaving factories and other buildings. Antrim Sheet Lisburn 1902 This very detailed map covers the busy town (now a city) of Lisburn, with coverage stretching from Longstone Street and Longstone Lane eastwards to Grove Street and Grove House; and from North Circular Road southwards to the Workhouse and Cemetery. Note that the Co. Down part of the map is left blank but the map does include the Largymore area east of the Lagan, which was part of Lisburn Urban District Council. The many features include Christ Church Cathedral, Market Square, town centre with all buildings neatly delineated, Castle Gardens, Millbrook and Beetling Mill, cattle market, Smithfield, St Patrick's RC church, flax spinning mill, railway with station, Christ Church, handkerchief works, Union Workhouse, Manor House, River Lagan and Lagan Navigation, Largymore, Largymore Factory, Ballymullan area, Lagan Factory, The Island, Roseville, etc. On the reverse is a list of private residents taken from a contemporary directory. Co. Armagh Co. Armagh Sheet 9.08 Portadown 1906 This detailed map of Portadown is double-sided for maximum coverage. The main map covers the centre of the town, with coverage stretching from the Bann Bridge southwards to Annagh Terrace. Features include railway junction and engine depot, Market Street, St Mark's church, bacon factory, weaving factories, Tavanagh Factory, Annagh Factory, High Street area, rope works, Pork Market, Corcrain area including Corcrain House and Corcrain Villa, Fair Green, part of Clownagh area including Clownagh Cottage, Tavanagh area including Tavanagh House, River Bann, etc. On the reverse, sheet 9.04 extends coverage north, and includes Garvaghy area, People's Park, Castle Island Factory, Bannview Factory, Parkside Damask Factory, railway station (then on east of river), Edenderry Weaving Factory, Eden Hall, St Joseph's RC Church, Woodside Nursery and Corcrain School. Co. Armagh Town Plans: Bessbrook, Crossmaglen & Keady 1906 This detailed map includes the Town Plans for the Village of Bessbrook and the small towns of Crossmaglen and Keady. This map is not standard to our series but includes three town plans, each at a scale of 18 inches to the mile, with 1880s directories for each on the reverse. The map of Bessbrook covers the village centre, with features including Christ Church, RC and Presbyterian churches, Flax Spinning & Weaving mills, terminus of electric tramway, mill pond, bleach green, College Square, Claremont Square and Church Street area. The map of Crossmaglen is dominated by the vast Market Square with buildings around it shown, also St. Patrick's RC church. The map of Keady shows the town centre, including Town Hall, St Clare's Convent, churches, Flax Spinning Mill, Crossmore School, Beetling Mill, disused quarries, Mill Pond etc. The railway is shown as 'under construction'. 4 Co. Cavan Co. Cavan Sheet Cavan Town 1909 This detailed map of Cavan is double-sided for maximum coverage. Sheet covers the western part of the town, with coverage stretching from the Gaol and Farnham Place eastwards to Drumconnick Post Office. Features on this map include railway with station, engine shed, Swellan Fort, Swellan Upper and Lower, Swellan Lough, Drumgoon Fort, Drumavanagh area, Drumconnick area, Edermin area, Drumbar House and Edermin House. On the reverse is part of adjacent sheet 20.16, extending coverage eastwards, and this includes Cavan town centre. Features here include Main Street and Church Street with all buildings neatly delineated, Townparks area, Kinnypottle area, Aghnaskerry, RC Cathedral, churches, Fair Green, Town Hall, Egg Market, Market Yard and Killynebber Cottage. Co. Down Town Plans 1-3 Downpatrick 1901 This detailed map includes all three Town Plans for Downpatrick, reduced in scale to 24 inches to the mile. The map is double-sided, with sheets 2-3 on the main side, sheet 1 on the reverse. Most of the town centre is shown on the main side and features on sheets 2-3 include town centre, station, Cathedral, Infantry Barrack, Court House, Ardmore, markets, St Patrick's RC church, St Margaret's Church, Irish Street, Market Street, English Street, Infirmary etc. On the reverse, sheet 1 covers the northern part of the town including the starch works and Rathkeltar. A 1900 directory of inhabitants is included. Co. Down Sheet 1.13 Holywood 1931 This is a very detailed double-sided map that covers most of the town of Holywood, east of Belfast. The main map covers the area from Holywood Barracks northwards to Shore Street and eastwards to Ardmore Terrace. Features include the railway with Holywood station and Kinnegar Halt, Holywood House, Demesne Road area, Plas Merdyn, Church Road area, town centre, Town Hall, St Phillip & St James Church, St Columbkille's RC Church, Esplanade, Holywood Golf Course. On the reverse is sheet 1.09, continuing coverage northwards to Priory Park, Marino House, Clanbrassil Terrace and Tudor Park. Co. Down Sheet 2.05 Bangor (West) 1901 This very detailed map is one of a pair for Bangor and covers the west of the town; coverage extends from Main Street westwards to Carnalea House and from St Comgall's RC church northwards to the shore and Wilson's Point. Features include the railway terminus, Royal Belfast Golf Links, Bryansburn, Brunswick Road area, Maxwell Road area, Mornington Park, Smelt Mill Bay, Sandy Row, Old and New Piers, Royal Hotel, Burlington Hotel, Grand Hotel, Pickie Rock, Town Hall, etc. On the reverse are directory extracts, including a list of inhabitants; entries A-H. The map links to sheet 2.06 Bangor East to the east. Co. Down Sheet 2.06 Bangor (East) 1901 This very detailed map is one of a pair for Bangor and covers the east of the town. Coverage extends from Crosby Street and St. Comgall's Church eastwards to Ballyholme and northwards to the shore and a large house called Glenganagh. Features shown are St Comgall's Church, Presbyterian church, handkerchief works, Ballymagee Street area, The Big Hole, Royal Ulster Yacht Club House, Victoria Road area, The Tower, Fairview House, Grove Hill, windmill, corn mill, Ballyholme Bridge, Lukes Point. Down Sheet 3.09 Donaghadee 1901 This very detailed map is double-sided for maximum coverage and takes in the northern part of the town, with coverage extending from Parade and the railway terminus northwards to Foreland Point and the Light Keepers Dwellings. Features include Lemon's Wharf, Harbour with piers and lighthouse, Coastguard Station, Manor Farm, Glebe House, Carnathen Hill, Golf Links and Shore Street. On the reverse is adjacent sheet 3.13, continuing coverage to the south of the town, as far as Galloways Bridge. Features here include most of the railway approach, Coalpit Bay, Robbys Point, Meetinghouse Point, Erin Lodge, Morey Hill, Manor House, Admiral Leslie's School, church, New Street and Manorhouse Pleasure Grounds. Co. Down Sheet 4.08 Sydenham & Strandtown 1902 This very detailed map is one of a group covering parts of east Belfast, east of the Lagan. Coverage stretches from Connswater Bridge eastwards to Circular Road, and from Dundela Street and Belmont Road northwards to the shore. Features include Victoria Park, railway with Sydenham station, Bunker's Hill, Norwood Tower, Sydenham House, Belmont Presbyterian church, Strandtown House, many other villas in grounds including Craigavon and Marmont, St Mark's church, Holywood Road area, Dundela Park, Sydenham School, Irish Distillery, Conn's Water. Down Sheet 4.11 Belfast (East) 1902 This very detailed map covers part of east Belfast, east of the Lagan. Note that the Co. Antrim area west of the Lagan is left blank. Coverage stretches from Albert Bridge and Ormeau Park eastwards to Castlereagh Road, and from Newtownards Road southwards to Ravenhill Avenue. Features include Belfast Rope Works, Grove Weaving Factory, Grove Mill, tramways and Knock tram depot, Knock Nursery, Belmont Park area, Greenwood area, Dundela House, Upper Newtownards Road area, Belfast & County Down Railway with Neill's Hill station, St Columba's church, Ballyhackamore, Knock River, Neill's Hill, St Donard's church, Clara Park, Loop Bridge, Holywood Arches, many villas, plus terraces nearer the city, Knock church (in ruins) and Bloomfield House. Down Sheet 5.09 Belfast (Knockdene Park) 1902 This very detailed map is one of a group covering parts of Belfast east of the Lagan. Coverage stretches from Knock Road and Hawthornden Road eastwards to Ballyhanwood House. Parts of Ballycloghan and Tullycarnet are included but the map is outer suburbia, and quite rural at the eastern end. Features include railway with Knock station (at west margin of map), Knock River, Castle Hill, Upper Newtownards Road, Ormiston house, entrance lodges to Stormont Demesne (but not Stormont itself), numerous villas, Knock Methodist church and Cabin Hill. 6 The map links to sheet 4.12 Bloomfield to the west, and 5.10 Dundonald to the east. Co. Down Sheet 5.10 Dundonald 1902 This very detailed map covers the village of Dundonald, east of Belfast. The map is double-sided for maximum coverage. The main map covers most of the village, and features include a stretch of railway with Dundonald station, Graham's Bridge, Ballybeen House, St Elizabeth's church, Constabulary Barrack and Church Quarter. On the reverse is a section of adjacent sheet 5.14 extending coverage south to include Henryville and Peartreehill. There is no sign of urban development. The map links to sheet 5.09 Knockdene Park to the west. Co. Down Sheet 6.09 Newtownards 1901 This very detailed map of Newtownards is double-sided for maximum coverage. The main map covers the town centre and east of the town, with coverage extending from Frederick Street and St Mark's church eastwards to the cemetery and ruined Movilla Church. Features include the town centre shown in detail with individual houses, railway with station, cattle market, Castle Garden Mills, Carleton Bridge, ruined towers, ruined old church, Conway Square, Town Hall, St Patrick's RC church, Court House, Movilla Weaving Factory, Movilla House, handkerchief works, Ards Recreation Ground, Regent Street, Francis Street, High Street etc. On the reverse is part of adjacent sheet 5.12 extending coverage westwards to include Model School, Workhouse, Brooklands Manse, section of railway, Scrabo Cottage, Kiltonga Bleach & Dye Works and Springfield Manse. Co. Down Sheet Banbridge 1903 This detailed map of Banbridge is double-sided for maximum coverage. The main map covers the centre and west of the town. Features include Newry Street, most of Bridge Street, railway station, Edenderry Works, Workhouse, Downshire Arms Hotel, Court House, Brookfield and Weaving Factory, and countryside westward to Grove Hill and Ringsend. On the reverse is part of adjacent sheet 27.14, covering Holy Trinity church, St. Patrick's RC church, weaving factories on the Bann, Church Square and Ballydown Bleach Works. Co. Down Sheet Newry 1903 This very detailed map covers the city of Newry at the beginning of the 20th century, and although the OS published it in their Co Down series, the map does extend westwards into the Co. Armagh part of the town and as far as the Urban District boundary. The map is double-sided for maximum coverage and includes Sheet Features include the Newry Canal, Merchants Quay, Albert Basin, Dublin Bridge station, Bridge Street station, Edward Street station, Bessbrook & Newry tramway terminus, Cathedral, St Patrick's Church, St Mary's Church, St Catherine's Church, markets, Town Hall and Downshire House. The map extends east about a mile to Temple Hill and Creeve House. Co. Londonderry Town Plans 1-6 Limavady 1904 This detailed map includes all six Town Plans for Limavady, reduced in scale to 18 inches to the mile. The map is double-side, with sheets 1-4 on the main side, sheets 5-6 on the reverse. Most of the town centre is included and features on sheets 1-4 include Midland Railway with station, Union Workhouse, Drumachose Presbyterian church, distillery, other churches, Catherine Street area, Main Street, Market Street, Christ Church, Irish Green Street, Scroggy House, weaving factory, Roe Bridge. Sheets 5-6 include RC church, Greystone Hall, Drumachose Rectory. On the reverse is a section of the Inch to the Mile map for the area, covering the area around Limavady, with coverage westwards to Ballykelly and Eglinton. 7 Co. Londonderry Sheet Derry/Londonderry 1905 This detailed map gives very good coverage of the City of Derry/Londonderry. Coverage stretches from Brooke Park southwards to Carlisle Bridge, and from the cemetery eastwards to Glendermott Road. Major features include St Columb's Cathedral, St Columb's College, Distillery, Custom House, city walls, St Eugene's RC Cathedral, Christ Church, lunatic asylum, museum, shirt and collar factories, transit sheds on quayside, Queen's Quay, Prince's Quay, Abercorn Quay, St Augustine's Church, bacon curing establishment, The Diamond, Butter Market, Nazareth House, tramways, Great Northern Railway with terminus, Guildhall, etc. On the east side of the River Foyle features include Donegal Railway with part of terminus (southern margin of map), Midland Railway with terminus, Waterside area, St Columb's RC church, Waterside Distillery, workhouse, Ebrington Barracks, St Columb's chapel etc. On the reverse is a selection of street directory entries. Co. Monaghan Co. Monaghan Sheet 9.11 Monaghan 1907 This detailed map covers most of the town of Monaghan. Coverage stretches from the town and canal bridge eastwards to Gallanagh Wood, and from St Louis Convent northwards to Milltown. Features include Convent Lake, Market Place, Old Cross Square, church, Court House, County Infirmary, Market Street, Church Square, railway with station and goods shed, Lunatic Asylum, Union Workhouse, Coolshannagh House, Mullaghmonaghan area, Mullaghadun area, Kilnacloy area, Gallanagh House, Knockroe, flax mill etc. On the reverse are directories of Monaghan for 1897 and Co. Monaghan Sheet Clones & Roslea 1907 This detailed map gives good coverage of the town of Clones, with coverage stretching southwards to Clonfad Bridge and westwards to Clondergole Bridge and the county boundary. Features include St Tigernach's church, Fair Green, Clonboy House, Ulster Canal, Infectious Diseases Hospital, railways with station, goods sheds and two engine sheds, RC church, Convent of St Louis, Mount Salem, Union Workhouse, Tranquilla House etc. On the reverse is a directory of Clones, together with a map of the Fermanagh village of Roslea, showing the village centre in detail, with St Tierney's RC Church, Fair Green, reading room, Tattinbarr, and Mullaghbrady Lough. Co. Tyrone Co. Tyrone Omagh 1906 This detailed map gives very good coverage of Omagh; most of the town is shown, with coverage eastwards to Tyrone County Hospital. Features include High Street, Market Street, John Street, Church Street, Campsie Road, all with individual buildings neatly delineated. Court House, Fair Green, Corn Market, RC church, Presbyterian church, Infantry Barracks, County Hospital, Creevenagh House, Campsie Saw Mills, Lisnamallard Mills, Lisnamallard House, Riverdale, Old Barracks, railway with station, sheds etc. all clearly shown with track layout. Meetinghousehill area, Dergmoney Lower area, Gortmore House, and Coolnagard Lower area, etc. On the reverse are extracts from a street directory, including Abbey Street, Campsie Avenue, Campsie Road, Castle Street, Church Street, Dublin Road, George's Street, High Street, John Street, Market Street and Mountjoy Road. Co. Tyrone Mini Map Sion Mills 1905 This little map shows Sion Mills in detail. It is just A4 in size, and features include railway with station, Flax Spinning Mills, churches, Sion House and The Park. Railway historians will note the GNR line threading its way across the map. Taken from the early OS colour printed sheet, it is a beautiful portrayal of this rugged and often hilly landscape. Most of Upper Lough Erne is covered and coverage stretches from Kinawley eastwards to Munnilly House, and from Derryharney southwards to Bawnboy. The main settlements are Lisnaskea and Newtown Butler.
