13 NATIONAL TRUST FOR JERSEY This year marks not only the 80th anniversary of the National Trust for Jersey, but also the 10th anniversary of our Coastline Campaign and so we are truly delighted to be involved in the Channel Island Heritage Festival which celebrates all things maritime. As Islanders, the coastline lies at the very heart of our culture, heritage, and indeed our sense of place and identity. From 2,000 years ago when La Cotte de St Brelade sheltered our Neanderthal ancestors, to the strategic advantage we gave to the British Crown, the sea has been instrumental in charting and shaping our future as an Island community. This may be less pertinent today but none the less we are extremely fortunate in having some of the most beautiful sandy beaches and dramatic coastline in the British Isles, providing us with a valuable place for recreation ranging from rock pooling to kayaking, as well as those increasingly elusive qualities of tranquillity and wilderness, which are crucial to our wellbeing. For us the protection of our coastline is of paramount importance, both for our generation and those that follow and so 2016 provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our coastal heritage whilst engendering further support for our Coastline Campaign. We therefore hope you will join us at one of our special celebratory events during the festival but above all simply take time to enjoy and breathe in the Channel Island coastline trust me you won t regret it. It was rediscovered on Christmas Day, 1982, by local diver Richard Keen, and raised between 1984 and The original ship was around metres long, of which some 17 metres of its lower parts remain. It is the only sea-going Roman ship to survive outside the Mediterranean, other than fragments. From 1999 to 2014 it underwent preservation work at the Mary Rose Trust. Since its return to Guernsey, work is now underway to create a purpose built home for the Asterix. The main timbers are now on display in the grounds of the Guernsey Pearl, opposite Fort Grey, and can be seen through a viewing window. There is also a small display that explains more about the ship, how it was built and how it came to sink off Guernsey. 18 VICTOR HUGO IN GUERNSEY French author and poet Victor Hugo spent 15 years living in exile in Guernsey from 55 and the Island provided the inspiration for many of his most famous works, including Les Misérables and Toilers of the Sea. I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO THE ROCK OF HOSPITALITY, TO THIS CORNER OF OLD NORMAN LAND WHERE RESIDES THE NOBLE LITTLE PEOPLE OF THE SEA, TO THE ISLAND OF GUERNSEY, SEVERE AND YET GENTLE... his dedication to the Island in Les Travailleurs de la mer. His Island home, Hauteville House, offers fans a chance to experience how he lived - and see where he wrote some of his books and poems. His writing room, the Crystal Room, is at the top of the eclectic house and has panoramic views across, out to sea and across to his homeland, France. It is not hard to see why Hugo was captivated by the islands. He described them as "fragments of France which fell into the sea and were gathered up by England". That fusion of French and British culture makes Guernsey unique and its heritage, scenery and people left a lasting impression on the author. Follow his footsteps with a guided or selfguided walk, visit the bays where he loved to swim and, of course, his home, Hauteville House. For the duration of the Heritage Festival there will be an exhibition on his remarkable life, marking the 160th anniversary of his purchase of Hauteville House in the Guernsey Information Centre. DON T MISS... The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Festival takes place from 2 10 April and features seminars by acclaimed experts on the author, guided walks, concerts, lunches and even a banquet. 21 60 YEARS OF THE GERMAN OCCUPATION MUSEUM This unique Guernsey museum is the life s work of one local man, Richard Heaume. As a schoolboy, he began collecting spent bullets in the local fields after the plough had gone by. In June 1966 his parents allowed him to use the cottage opposite their house to display his collection. Over the years, his collection has grown with purpose-built extensions added to the small farming cottage. In 1976, the transport corridor and tea room were added and, in 1987, the Occupation Street was built, bringing life under German rule in the Islands to life. For more information go to: germanoccupationmuseum.co.uk More recently, in 2001, a further small extension was built, housing a thoughtprovoking prison with information about the Islands deportees and the tragic story of those taken away to Auschwitz concentration camp. The museum is now an extensive collection of original Occupation items and documents including many extremely rare pieces. OCCUPATION AND LIBERATION With the threat of War edging closer across Europe to the UK, thousands of Islanders were faced with the choice of evacuation or an unknown future. Between 19th and 21st June 1940 just over 25,000 people fled the Channel Islands, many of them children who would be separated from their parents for five years. On 28th June, harbour came under attack when tomato trucks, awaiting export, were heavily bombed by German aircraft killing 33 people and injuring many more, these attacks then continue at several other sites across the Island. At 9pm, the BBC AND OUR DEAR CHANNEL ISLANDS ARE ALSO TO BE FREED TODAY Winston Churchill announced the demilitarisation of the Island. On 1st July, the first military Commander, Major Albrecht Lanz arrived at Guernsey airport. Over the following five years, Islanders lived under German rule and Hitler focused on building fortifications in the Island to turn the Channel Islands into an 'Impregnable Fortress'. On 9th May, the Germans finally surrendered to combined British forces and Force 135, led by Brigadier Snow, landed in Guernsey. Throughout the Heritage Festival, the Museum is offering a 10% discount, just take this guide along when you visit, and show the discount card on the inside back cover. 40 THE GERMAN OCCUPATION MUSEUM THE GERMAN OCCUPATION MUSEUM 41

32 JERSEY: ICE AGE ISLAND An exhibition that has opened at the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery sheds new light on Jersey s Ice Age past. Jersey: Ice Age Island, sponsored by Capco Trust, is the culmination of three years of archaeological fieldwork. A team of experts has revisited previous material discovered in the Island, and uncovered exciting new items that redefine our understanding of Jersey s landscape and human occupation. Jersey is emerging as an Ice Age jewel and a key location for understanding human evolution, expansion and survival over a quarter of a million years of climate change. The Island s Ice Age archaeology presented in this exhibition tells us about how our Neanderthal cousins survived in northwest Europe. The exhibition uses visual and multi-media displays, as well as items on loan from the British Museum and Natural History Museum London to capture the significance of the archaeological material and present it in an engaging and thought provoking way. Jersey: Ice Age Island is at the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery in St. Helier, open daily 10am to 5pm.
