Day 1 Arrive at your hotel in Dumfries, Queen of the South and lively capital of the region. Visit the amazing Camera Obscura, one of only three working in Britain. Learn about the town s famous connections with Scotland s national poet, Robert Burns: see his former house, favourite pub and final resting place. Day 2 Familiarise yourself with the wider area with an early morning train from Dumfries north west to Kilmarnock through the Nith Valley, enjoying historic viaducts, tunnels and glimpsing the local mining heritage en route. The coach returns south along the stunning Ayrshire coast with notable attractions such as Culzean Castle and new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. This vibrant city has much to offer from grandiose architecture, superb museums such as the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, magnificent Victorian pubs and splendid new shopping centres. Make the most of this day trip by dining on the return ferry. Day 5 Time to depart, but the holiday isn t over yet! Perhaps stop at one of the excellent farm shops for coffee, then a short hop from Stranraer to the delightful coastal village of Portpatrick in time for lunch, sitting outside one of the many pubs to admire the harbour views. In the afternoon, return by the inland route, including thatched House of Burns at Kirkoswald to buy some local treats or the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum with trail to Burns Cottage, Auld Kirk and Brig o Doon at Alloway. Day 4 Head north today up to Glasgow, city of style, for a panoramic tour including its Cathedral, nearby 15th century Provand s Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow, the University quarter and West End with recently refurbished, award winning Kelvingrove Museum & Art Galleries; or the new Riverside Transport Museum; not forgetting the Burrell Collection or Charles Rennie MacIntosh s House for An Art Lover - you are quite simply spoilt for choice. In the city centre, there s renowned shopping at Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, St Enoch Centre and the Italian Centre. Another possibility is to continue north to Loch Lomond, before returning via the Clyde coastal route and the attractive seaside town of Largs, perhaps stopping for afternoon tea or an ice-cream at Nardini s art deco café. Day 5 Why not finish the tour on a high with a delightful Nith Valley train journey to either Dumfries or Gretna, before continuing the journey home. 4

Day 1 Settle into your hotel and relax in beautiful countryside surroundings. Day 2 Head for Scotland s capital city for a panoramic tour and a choice of visits from Edinburgh Castle, Scottish Whisky Experience, Palace of Holyrood House to the Royal Yacht Britannia; or simply soak up the atmosphere in stylish Princes Street with its superb shops and the historic Royal Mile. Day 3 Get to know the Borders today, its turbulent and romantic history, punctuated by imposing castles, elegant abbeys, stately mansions and dramatic ruins. Many of the abbeys are five star rated and could fill a day on their own. Thread your journey along their route and weave in visits to other notable attractions: Melrose, also the location of Sir Walter Scott s impressive Abbotsford House; Jedburgh, site of Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre; and Kelso with nearby imposing Floors Castle. A change of scene in the afternoon as we head for the Berwickshire coast: North Berwick with impressive Bass Rock off its coast, a haven for seabirds; the delightful fishing village of Dunbar, also home to Belhaven brewery which welcomes visitors; or further south, picturesque Eyemouth, one time smuggler s paradise. Return via Coldstream, the natural boundary between Scotland and England, although best known as the birthplace of its famous Guards regiment. Day 4 A quiet day before departure with a half day excursion to the award winning Unesco World Heritage Village of New Lanark. This 18th century restored cotton mill village nestles in a spectacular setting in a natural gorge, close to the Falls of the Clyde and source of the river. Go back in time with the Annie McLeod Experience ride to find out how people lived and worked in Robert Owen s time. Explore the village, enjoy the shops and spectacular new roof garden. Day 5 Why not return south east through the Cheviot Hills, perhaps visiting Alnwick Castle of Harry Potter fame en route. 7 Glorious Gardens of Argyll & the Isles Enjoy Argyllshire s finest gardens combined with island day trips to Gigha, God s Isle and gem of the Southern Hebrides, and Islay, famous for its unique landscape and peaty malt whisky distilleries such as Bowmore, Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Day 1 Head north west, past Glasgow and along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, through some dramatic landscapes, before beautiful Loch Fyne opens up to reveal Inveraray. Time perhaps to visit one of the area s excellent attractions before checking into the hotel by the loch shores. Day 2 After breakfast, head south along the Mull of Kintyre to make the short ferry crossing to the beautiful, tranquil Isle of Gigha. Named Gudey by the Vikings, meaning The Good or God s Isle, it is the most southerly of the Inner Hebrides and is community-owned, even boasting its own tartan. Seven miles long by a mile and a half wide, it is recognised for its breathtaking sandy beaches, clear green seas, ancient monuments, such as Kilchattan Church and Standing Stones, and host of bird and marine wildlife. Explore world renowned Achamore Gardens, viewed by the islanders as the jewel in their crown with over fifty acres of rare and unusual plants surrounded by picturesque woodland. A world apart. Day 3 Stay on dry land today, heading north to the bustling fishing port of Oban. Explore its distillery, craft shops, galleries, cafés and pubs before continuing onto Seil Island and the Bridge over the Atlantic. Or perhaps take in one of the area s famous gardens: north to Ardtornish, Kinlochlaich and Ardchattan Priory; east to Angus; south to An Cala, Ardmaddy Castle, and Arduaine. Make a round trip south along the coast road, glimpsing more beautiful island views and passing the Crinan Canal, gateway to the Atlantic, before reaching Inveraray once more. Day 4 Another day of island exploration, this time to the Isle of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides, with an impressive one hundred and thirty miles of coastline and eight working whisky distilleries. Arriving at the ferry port and capital, Port Ellen, we drive north to the fascinating Museum of Islay Life. After lunch, visit Bowmore Distillery, a world famous brand. The island boasts many remarkable hand craft businesses: Persabus Pottery, Islay Woollen Mill, Islay Quilters and Islay Ales. The Atlantic west coast of Islay is renowned for its stunning bays at Machir, Saligo and Sanaigmore with some of the most impressive sunsets in Scotland. Dine on the return ferry to make the most of this excursion. Day 5 Homeward bound with memories of some of Scotland s finest gardens and islands. A few hundred cases were saved by some of the local community before the ship sank, which stood their supplies in good stead for some time - Uisge Beatha!
