2 SICILY AND HER ISLES Sicily is billed as perhaps the world s first true cosmopolitan, multi-racial society. Asians, Africans and Europeans have all ruled this island at various stages. Forget your impression left by The Godfather Sicily is a friendly, vibrant, bustling island fringed with golden orchards, lush forests and the unforgettable soaring Mount Etna. If you love food, history and quaint villages, you cannot help but fall in live with Sicily the Mediterranean s largest island. Between Sicily and Tunisia lies the tiny volcanic island of Pantelleria. While Italian, the Arabic influence in architecture and culture is undeniable. Its pre-history of dwellings and artefacts takes you back 35,000 years, and bronze-age defensive ramparts are still found here. It played a strategic part in World War II due to its coveted trans-continental location in the Straits of Sicily. Much of the black-rock island is covered in vineyards, and those who love sweeter wines might develop a taste for the regional tipple Passita. The Aeolian Islands lie in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Scily and near Italy s foot. They comprise of a volcanic archipelago of 8 islands, with Mt Stromboli - on the island of Stromboli - being highly active over the years. At night time, a spectacular display of lava and fire is not uncommon. The largest of the islands is Lipari which, in the middle of summer, attracts many tourists from the mainland. Join us on this medium-paced, small group tour of these gorgeous islands. Be warned however, you may not want to return home.

3 Day 1, Sunday 7th October Transit Depart Sydney or Melbourne for your flight to Palermo via Rome. All flights to be confirmed. Additional time in Rome on the way over or on return is easily arranged. Meals in flight. Day 2, Mon 8th October Palermo On arrival into Palermo, you ll be collected at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the city. Here, you will stay for 5 nights. The rest of the day is for rest and recuperation after your long flight. If you d like to fill in some of the time with sight-seeing, the hop-on-hop-off bus is a great way to see the city. Watch the vespers swerve in and out of the traffic! There s a welcome dinner is at a local restaurant. D Day 3, Tue 9th October Palermo - Monreale - Palermo Today you will see the core sites of the capital and Monreale. After breakfast, our first stop is Monreale to see where the Arab-Norman art and architecture reached the pinnacle of its glory with the Duomo. Launched in 1174 by William II, it represents scenes from the Old and New Testaments all in golden mosaics. You ll have time to stroll around the quanit township before heading back to Palermo to the cathedral and the magnificent Arab-Norman Palatine Chapel. You ll continue to the Piazza Pretoria and Via Maqueda, whose four corners converge Palermo at a quartet of baroque palaces left over from the heyday of Spanish rule dating from You ll also visit the Vucciria markets and other places of interest before heading back to your hotel in the afternoon. B/D Day 4, Wed 10th October Palermo Cefalu Palermo After breakfast, you ll head East from Palermo for a day trip to the gorgeous township of Cefalu, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. Cefalu is a charming coastal town home to a massive Norman Cathedral with outstanding mosaics. After a guided tour of the town, you ll have free time for lunch and then a little shopping before heading back to Palermo. Lunch is at your leisure at one of the many gorgeous restaurants by the sea. (You must try the delicious cannoli, famous in the region). B/D Day 5, Thur 11th October Erice Salt Pans Marsala Palermo Today we tour parts of western Sicily noting that the order of the destinations may change. In Marsala, you ll visit the cathedral, dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury, and the archeological museum with its jewel, a Punic ship (the sole example in the world of a liburna, an agile warship roughly 35m in length). We ll visit a local oil factory and winery, where we ll have lunch and taste their local Sicilian wines. Later we travel between Trapani and Marsala on the Salt Way Road. We tour the

4 historic saltpan works, where the ancient tradition of harvesting salt from the sea is still practiced. This afternoon we continue to Erice. The Elymians settled the medieval town of Erice, which was an important religious site associated with the goddess Venus. Wander through its ancient streets and visit some of the famous homemade pastry shops -world-famous for marzipan candies and other delicacies like almond and pistachio pastries. Later, we return to Palermo. B/L/D Day 6, Friday 12th October Mazzara Del Valle Selinunte Palermo Mazara del Vallo is home of the Dancing Satyr. This large bronze statue, which probably dates to the 3rd century BC, was discovered 500 meters under water in the Strait of Sicily in 1998 and now resides in the Museo del Satiro in Sant Egidio Church. Piazza della Repubblica is at the heart of the city with Baroque buildings such as the Bishop's Palace and the cathedral and a statue of San Vito. The town was founded by the Phoenicians and, like many other towns in Sicily, has a history featuring Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman conquests. It was an important port in antiquity and is still a major fishing town. The harbour has the largest fishing vessel fleet of Italy. We will drive straight near the city of Castelvetrano, to Selinunte, one of the most ancient archeological site of Sicily. This ancient Greek colony, founded in 650 B.C., is divided in four zones: the acropolis with its public and religious buildings, the ancient city with the ruins of various homes, the eastern temples, which give some idea of the wealth and importance of this Greek settlement in the 6th c.b.c. and the Sanctuary of Malophoros, dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of fertility and harvest. At the Acropoli you will visit Temples A and C. The first temple to be spotted as the track climbs uphill is the ruin of Temple A. Within the wall with the doorway into the "naòs" ( a small chapel) are two spiral staircases, the most ancient examples known to date. Temple C, which was reerected in 1925, is the earliest surviving temple at Selinus and was probably dedicated to Apollo or Heracles. Temple G is the second largest Greek temple in Sicily, after the Temple of Olympian Zeus at Agrigento. B/D Day 7, Saturday 13th October Palermo - Agrigento Today is a later start. We depart Palermo today for our next destination Agrigento. We ll drive through the interior of Sicily to reach Agrigento with a few stops along the way. The drive will take about hours. On arrival check in to your hotel where you ll stay for two nights. B/D Day 8, Sunday 14th October Valley of Temples, Agrigento Today after breakfast you will visit the fascinating, ancient Greek sites - the complete Doric Temples. Built by the Eliymans one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily the ruins date back to around 420 BC. The tour will take you a few hours with a fair bit of walking on what is mostly flat ground. If you love your history, this is a fabulous day tour. B/D Day 9, Monday 15th October Agrigento - Piazza Armerina This morning you ll drive to Piazza Armerina, situated in the centre of Sicily about 2 hour s drive. Here we ll will visit the Roman Villa del Casale, built sometime between the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th century A.D. It comprises more than 40 rooms (including the ancient toilettes!) and houses some of the finest Roman mosaics in existence, the most famous of which being the so-called Bikini Girls. The world of the old Romans comes alive; you can see how they lived, hunted and loved! Our hotel is likely to be the Hotel Villa San Mauro. B/D Day 10, Tuesday 16th October Piazza Armerina Caltagirone Ragusa In the morning, we ll go for a walk through the baroque city centre of the town of Caltagirone. This city is the most famous in Sicily for the ceramic production dating back to the prehistoric ages. Next, we will enjoy the view of the renowned stair of Santa Maria del Monte, the landmark of Caltagirone, each step is paved with majolica tiles in different colours and shapes. During the visit, you will also have the opportunity to have some time for shopping in the many ceramic shops. Then you ll drive on to Modica, situated in the Iblean Mountains and along with Ragusa, part of the UNESCO Heritage Sites in Sicily. Check in to your hotel. B/D Day 11, Wednesday 17th October Modica - Ragusa After breakfast we will explore both of these cities in depth. The main economy of the area revolves around dairy cheese and agricultural products like olives, carobs, legumes, and grains. The famous chocolate of Modica, is absolutely unique and produced from an ancient, original Aztec recipe. (Yes we get to taste the chocolate!). We ll continue onto Ragusa walk through the historical town of Ragusa Ibla, highlighting the wide array of Baroque architecture including several stunning palaces and churches. Back to the hotel for dinner and overnight. B/D Day 12, Thursday 18th October Ragusa - Noto - Siracusa/Ortigia After breakfast, the group will make it s way to Siracusa via Noto which, for lovers of architecture, must be a highlight. Both it s city and church in the main square are UNESCO listed and when you first see them, you will understand why. A smallish township of about 20,000 people, Noto makes for great strolling and people watching. On arrival into Siracusa you ll check in to your hotel where you ll stay for two nights. B/D

5 Day 13, Friday 19th October Siracusa Today you will be treated to a tour of the stunning city of Siracusa. Your guide will take you for a stroll through the streets of Ortygia Island, the heart of the city centre. Then we ll visit the Archaeological Park, highlights of which include the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and. the Paradise Quarry. There ll also be time to wander around at your leisure which is just as well because there s lots to see and buy. B/D Day 14, Saturday 20th October Siracusa - Taormina We re just a few hours drive from the very popular hillside township of Taormina. On the left you can spot Mount Aetna as you head north. Taormina is a very popular tourist spot and in summer it can get crazy (which is why we are there in Autumn). You ll take a guided tour of the core sites including the ancient Roman theatre which they still use for concerts today. Importantly, you ll have the chance to wander through the town s cobbled stoned streets to window shop, shop, eat or people watch. It a s great town to do all of the above. Check into your hotel for two nights. B/D Day 15, Sunday 21st October Taormina - Etna Taormina Get ready for a bumpy, but highly enjoyable Etna jeep ride. We ll be picked up at the hotel by off-road vehicles and transferred to Etna Volcano. Enjoy a FWD Jeep experience through Etna area: Mount Fontana (view of Bove Valley), the Thieves Cave (grotta dei ladroni), extinct craters of Sartorius Mounts, lava flow from 2002 eruption. We stop for a lunch at San Marco, a local farmhouse to taste typical Sicilian dishes. During afternoon we will take an off-road drive along the Linguaglossa Castiglione and Alcantara Gorges. Short visit to Canyon entrance. Later we ll return to our hotel for dinner. B/L/D Day 16, Monday 22nd October Taormina Lipari, Aeolian Isles Departure from Taormina to Milazzo to take the ferry from to Lipari. Check in to your accommodation at the hotel, then there s free time to enjoy the island. B/D Day 17, Tuesday 23rd October Halfday Volcano boat trip Aeolian Islands The island of Vulcano, characterised by its black beaches of volcanic sand, still preserves the charm of untamed nature, which can be enjoyed by taking a hike to the craters (400m). Another option for today is to take a bath in the sulphurous hot springs, which Vulcano is famous for. B/D Day 18, Wednesday 24th October Lipari and Panarea Before docking in S.Pietro s port you will sail along Baia Calajunco and the small Zimmari s beach. You will have time to visit the village, have a swim or enjoy only the small island. In about 45 minutes walk (or by optional taxi) it is possible to reach the small prehistoric village of Capo Milazzese, dated to 1400 BC. And well worth the visit. B/D Day 19, Thursday 25th October Salina Boat tour Today you will be docking in Rinella s port (Salina) where you ll have the opportunity to visit the small village. Depart from Rinella for the complete external tour of the island of Salina with particular attention to the Baia di Pollara, where the film Il Postino was shot by Massimo Troisi. We finally reach the village of Santa Marina Salina; second stop to visit the picturesque town and to do some light shopping and people watching. B/D Day 20, Friday 26th October Lipari to Palermo for return flight You ll head back with the ferry from Lipari to Milazzo where the private transfer will bring you to Palermo. Today is a free day in Palermo, (flights TBA). Use the day to explore by foot, shop, or see some of the local sites. Overnight in Palmero. B/D Days 21 24, Saturday 27th Tuesday 30th October Pantelleria Depending on when our flight departs for Pantelleria, we may have the chance to transfer to Mondella, a beautiful seaside resort town, 20 minutes from the airport On arrival at the tiny volcanic Mediterranean Island of Pantelleria, we will be transferred to The Hotel Mursia where we will stay for three nights. All meals (B/L/D s) are provided by the hotel or by local restaurants during our stay. Hint try the Passito after dinner a local wine made from grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice. Our time spent on the island will need to remain flexible given the weather. We will attempt to include... A boat tour around part of the island with various stops including the main swimming spots. A visit to the thermal sites of Gadir The Lake of Venus (sulphurous waters and mud baths). A complimentary short massage at The Venus baths in the hotel. A tour to the church of Sibà (built by the Spanish) A tour of the Montagna Grande (Big Mountain), with a visit to the main volcanic phenomenon and possibility of some light trekking (for those who are up to it and weather permitting). A visit to some or all (time permitting) of the unique archeological sites A tour of the island in a minibus with view of the main coastlines including the famous Arco dell Elefante (The Elephants Arch) A visit to some of the main wine cellars and caper producers with various tastings where possible A visit to the native olive farmers of the island during the olive-picking season.

6 A visit to some local beautiful gardens where there is a 1,000 year old olive tree, still producing fruit! A visit to an old dammuso (local Arabic style house) which has been rebuilt. Important! Pantelleria is not a traditional tourist destination and operates on what the locals call Panta time. It is rustic, slow moving and you will not find the usual shops, tourist buses and cafes. The hotel is comfortable, but please, bring your patience, positive attitude and do not expect things like they are in other tourist destinations. These characteristics are its main charm! It has not changed for many years (think Pacific Islands attitude, in the Mediterranean). Day 25, Wednesday 31st October Transit for home or your next destination. 7 BLUE DOT TRAVEL TERMS AND CONDITIONS August 2017 By making a booking and paying your deposit you accept the following booking terms and conditions. A. BOOKING CONDITIONS 1. How to Book To secure your place on a tour, a deposit and completed booking form should be sent to Blue Dot Travel. Balance of payment becomes due 60 days prior to departure. If the balance is not paid by the due date, we may regard the booking as cancelled. If flights are not booked on a group fare basis, then an interim payment will be required within 7 days of notification. On occasions, you may be asked to pay for certain aspects of the tour prior to final payment. An example may be a cruise component within our overall program. 2. Single supplement A booking may be accepted on a share room basis on the condition that the person requesting the share reservation agrees that we accept no responsibility for any incompatibility between the persons sharing and no guarantee is given that a share room will be available. If not available, at the time of final payment you agree to pay the single supplement. If you choose to pay a single supplement for a tour and on an occasion due to non availability, a single room cannot be provided, a refund will be made for any night that a single room was not available. 3. Compulsory Travel Insurance Personal travel insurance is not included in the tour price. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of all participants, however, we insist that you take out a personal travel Insurance policy as a condition of us accepting you on the tour. Each traveller is responsible for ensuring they have the correct level of cover for their individual circumstances. It is the traveller s responsibility to check that your insurance policy (especially those offered by your credit card company) covers you comprehensively for the entirety of the tour you have booked on. Your travel insurance must be in place before airline bookings are made. In the event of cancellation after flights have been booked, any airfares paid by Blue Dot Travel may be forfeited. You may be entitled to a refund of some or all the airfare depending on the airline s cancellation policy, or you may be able to claim this on your travel insurance. 4. Discounts Early bird discounts, if offered, cannot be used in conjunction with any other discount applied. 5. Client responsibilities The client acknowledges and agrees that the tours offered by Blue Dot Travel may be adventurous in nature and that he or she travels at his/her own risk. A minimum level of fitness is required to be able to participate on a Blue Dot Tour. You must be able to walk at least 500 metres at a reasonable pace without requiring a stop, and be able to walk up three flights of stairs unassisted. It is the client s own responsibility to obtain and maintain any appropriate travel documents, eg, a valid passport, any valid visas, permits, vaccination certificate or the like. The client has the obligation to disclose any pre existing medical condition or allergies to Blue Dot Travel when booking the tour and the company reserves its right to refuse a booking with a client suffering from any such condition. 6. Tour Cancellations Cancellation must be notified in writing to our office. If cancellation is received more than 60 days prior to departure, the deposit will be forfeited along with any other prepaid portions of your tour such a cruise deposit. If cancellation takes place between 60 days and 31 days before departure a fee of 50% of the total booking cost will be charged. If 30 days or less remain before departure 100% of the tour cost will be charged. [Depending on the reason for cancellation, these charges may be recoverable under your travel insurance policy]. If less than 10 people are booked on any tour, the trip may proceed without a host accompanying the group. This will be at the discretion of Blue Dot Travel. An in-country guide will still be provided in these circumstances. Should there be too few people booked for any tour, we reserve the right to cancel that tour no later than 60 days before scheduled departure. In this event, a full refund will be made, and Blue Dot Travel will not be liable for any claims made or any additional costs incurred by you. Upon commencement of the trip, no refunds will be made for any reason, for unused section(s). If Blue Dot Travel deems it to be appropriate to cancel any tour due to factors beyond its control, such as civil unrest, natural disaster or other emergencies in the areas to be visited, in the period just prior to departure when Client Trust funds have, or could reasonably be expected to have been expended on purchasing elements of the tour, i.e. domestic and international flights, hotel accommodation among other things, then Blue Dot Travel will refund all monies that can be recovered from the recipients of those expenses, without entering into any legal dispute, this being the limit of its obligations. Blue Dot Travel is only obliged to cancel a tour if the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade issue a travel warning stating Do Not Travel. 7. Itinerary Changes We reserve the right to vary the itinerary, accommodation and forms of transport should any conditions make it preferable, appropriate or necessary to do so, we will provide alternative services as close as possible to those listed. Wherever possible we shall advise you of such changes prior to departure, however we accept no responsibility for any alterations made for any reason, or for any associated loss or damage. If any additional expenses are incurred through delays, accidents, or disruption of planned itineraries because of force majeure or if it considered advisable by our principals, such expenses are to be borne by you. It is possible that a route change could be necessary due to inclement weather, political restrictions or any other cause. Route changes will always be at the discretion of the group leader and the responsible agency. We will not be responsible for postponement or delay caused by delayed flights or schedule changes at any point in tour. No refund will be available in the event of any route or itinerary changes including hotel accommodation.

Costs We reserve the right to amend our prices for any tour, without notice, at any time up until final payment has been made by you, in the event of exchange rate fluctuations, increases in fuel costs, airport charges, airfares or increase in other service provider s fees. It is the travellers duty to ensure they have checked the most up to date travel itinerary prior to the tour departure. On occasions we may be booking special cruises, ferries, expedition ships or internal flights which require larger advance payments, in which case you will be advised. All prices are quoted in Australian dollars and must be paid in Australian dollars. Items not included in our costs Your personal travel insurance (which is compulsory) Tourist visas Special fees/taxes incurred by local governments and airlines Transfers not included on the Group s itinerary, for example when you arrive separately from a different destination or using different airline Domestic Australian transfers unless specified on the itinerary Seat preferences where additional cost applies Laundry, postage, personal clothing, medical expenses, and all items of a personal nature Mountain, road or river rescue or any other emergency evacuation charges. Expenses incurred as a result of illness and any other unforeseen situations and events. Expenses incurred in cases of personal liability, injury or death if you have been participating in optional activities. Excess baggage charges. Loss incurred by rerouting, cancellation, inclement weather, floods, famine, political disruptions, strikes, riots and other disturbances. Meals not stipulated in the itinerary Alcoholic drinks and other beverages Tips to guides, drivers or service personnel on tour Photography fees (where applicable) 9. Blue Dot Travel s rights Blue Dot Travel reserve the right to exclude a client from any tour if they fail to comply with our fair and sensible instructions while on tour, if they prevent other clients enjoyment of a tour, if they jeopardise the safety of other clients, if they engage in illegal or undesirable behaviour, or if they become a danger to themselves or other clients. If this happens, the client will not be entitled to a refund and Blue Dot Travel will not be responsible for any expenses that the traveller may incur if they are excluded from a tour for any of these or other unforeseen reasons. 10. Consumer Claims If a problem occurs while you are away, it is essential and most practical to try to resolve it locally with the guide, host or provider. If you are unhappy with your hotel room please inform the Duty Manager so the situation may be rectified on the spot. If you have any other complaint please advise us promptly so that we can attempt to resolve the matter. If you fail to take these steps any claim for compensation may be reduced or denied. If you have an unresolved complaint this must be put to us in writing advising details of the efforts, if any, that were made with the local operator to resolve the issue. Please send this with supporting documentation within 30 days of return to Australia. No claim made after this period will be considered. 11. Photo competitions If you provide us with a photo from the tour in relation to our on-tour photo competitions, you are providing us to use the image in our newsletters, website, social media sites and other promotional material. This is a condition of entry to our on-tour photos competitions. 12. Social Media From time to time, usually whilst on tour, Blue Dot Travel will post photos to the Blue Dot Travel Facebook page and other Blue Dot Travel social media websites. The photos may include images of individuals and groups of individuals who are on the tour. These are available for anyone to see when they log in to the Blue Dot Travel Facebook or relevant social media site page. Should you not wish to have your photo posted on any of these social media sites, you must advise us on or before departure of the tour. Otherwise, we cannot take responsibility for your image being posted. B. DISCLAIMER BY BOOKING AGENT (Blue Dot Travel, ACN , Licence No 2TA004048) 1. These booking conditions cannot exclude the provisions of the Competition & Consumer Act 2010 or of any relevant State Act or Australian Consumer law. 2. Under these Acts Blue Dot Travel is required to provide services to you with due care and skill and to provide services which are reasonable for a particular purpose if you have made that purpose known. The Acts provide a right to compensation in appropriate cases. 3. Blue Dot Travel gives notice that it acts as agent only for our tours, and of all other persons and companies who provide the services outlined in this itinerary and in connection with any tour for which you book and that this contract is between the applicant and the in country operator. 4. Blue Dot Travel warrants that its services as a tour retailer and booking agent will be rendered with due care and skill. 5. Blue Dot Travel does not state that the route suggested or recommended in the itinerary for any tour is the best or more suitable from any particular point of view. 6. Any maps in the itinerary and other documents are for information only, and may not necessarily show the exact routings. 7. In promoting the tours outlined in our itineraries Blue Dot Travel acts as agent for each travel supplier and their associated companies and contractors and therefore: all tours outlined in this itinerary, and all tickets, vouchers and documents issued by Blue Dot Travel are subject to the terms and conditions of the persons and companies for whom Blue Dot Travel are agents all tickets and coupons or vouchers issued by Blue Dot Travel and all arrangements for transport or conveyance or accommodation, are made by Blue Dot Travel as agents for such others persons and companies and are made at your request on the express conditions that Blue Dot Travel shall not be liable for any injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned whether by reason of defect in any vehicle or mode of transportation, or through the acts or default of any company or person engaged in carrying passengers or in carrying out the arrangements of the tour or otherwise in connection with the tour or of any provider of any accommodation to provide any facility normally available. Blue Dot Travel is not responsible for any default, omission, negligence or other act our suppliers and the contractors associated with them. Blue Dot Travel is not responsible for losses or additional expenses due to delays or changes in transportation services, other services, sickness, accident, injury, weather, strikes, war, civil unrest or disturbance, riots, quarantine or other causes. 8. These terms and conditions cannot be altered or waived by any servant, agent or representative of Blue Dot Travel or of any person providing services on the tour.
