4 November 1964 Technological Report No. K-177 (1964/75) THE SERVICE AREAS OF THE KIRK O'SHOTTS TELEVTSI:ON AND V.R.F. SOUND TRANSMITTERS SUBJECT The service area of the Kirk o'shotts Band 11 transmission had never been surveyed. When the survey was started in January 1960 it was decided to include also a check of the Band I service area. The preliminary survey has never been considered satisfactory qn account of the small number of points measured at the time. Because of the pressure of more urgent work, the measurements extended over the period January 1960 to February 1964.,The Band I measurements give more detailed information of the service area and largely confirm the preliminary survey. It is of interest to note that in 50% of the towns, the latest measurements are within ± 2 db and 90% are within ± 5 db of the preliminary survey. 1. 5 2 2. SURVEY RESULTS Maps T.S97 and F.188 show the field strength contours for the television and v.h.f. sound transmissions respectively. The median field strength values for all towns and villages measured in the course of the surveys are" given in the Appendix. The 10% and 90% values are not given, but if required for any particular town(s) they can be extracted from the field strength charts and made available at short notice. 3. COMMENTS ON SERVICES The television and v.h.f. sound transmissions provide a very good service in the highly populated Central Scotland area. The television transmission is free from United Kingdom co-channel interference down to the nominal service area limit (40 db(~v/m)) but there are highly populated areas on the fringe of the service area which are poorly served by television and v.h.f. sound. In particular the county of Angus is in need of an improved service; this deficiency will be made good when the Forfar (television and v.h.f. sound) and Dundee (television) stations come into service during A low-power television relay station to serve Perth is also due to come into service during The service in parts of Ayrshire is also poor, but the prbposed Toward television and v.h.f. sound transmissions will serve Rothesay, Port Bannatyne, Largs and Skelmorlie, while future individual low-power television transmitters will serve the towns of Ayr and Girvan.
