1 Sussex Cyclists Association ESTABLISHED 1921 Event Report ESCA 65 th Anniversary Events 29 May 2011 Following on from his win on the Crawley Wheelers 41 the previous week, East Grinstead's Steve Dennis convincingly won the 65Km event with 1:30:17. Rob Pelham similarly followed up his 2nd place from that event, with 1:32:19, almost a minute quicker than 3rd place man and clubmate, Nick Dwyer (1:33:13). In-Gear's Dave Pollard comfortably took 4th spot with 1:34:06 with Lewes's Peter Morris rounding out the top 5 with 1:36:14. Anita Jones of Brighton Phoenix Tri was the fastest lady on the long distance with 2:02:54. Running in tandem with the 65Km event was a single lap 34.6Km version. East Grinstead came out on top again with Christian Yates edging out Matthew Woods of Eastbourne Rovers by just two seconds (52:36 to 52:38). Ivan Johnson of Hastings and St Leonards was 3rd on 53:27. Fastest lady was Kaye Dwyer with 1:08:43, capably adding to the Wanderers prize haul. Joseph Jenner of Hastings & St Leonards was the only junior, his 1:05:55 not only bagging him the Junior award but 13th overall. Organiser Pete Moon had also managed to incorporate a Hill Prime at Boreham St into the event and this went to Lewes's Pete Morris with 1:45.9, just 0.4 secs quicker than Steve Dennis. Dave Pollard added to his winnings by being the 3rd fastest up the hill with 1:52.8. So back to the strap line "Wind still a problem". The course started on the A271 east of Hailsham, heading out to Boship and then down the A22 to Polegate. Consequently everyone had to face the very strong SW wind, one that has been blowing for quite a few days. The route then went east down the A27, over Pevensey Levels and up to Ninfield. Here the wind became a tailwind, allowing everyone to cruise along in top gear, the fast boys no doubt putting in 35mph + in places. Back on to the A271 where fortunately the hills provided some shelter from the head wind, just in time to do it all again for those on the 65Km event. Despite a minor little hiccup first thing at the HQ, Pete Moon and Ann Human put together an excellent promotion, not only combining two events but offering a whole variety of prizes.
2 East Sussex Cycling Association 2011 President: Mick Kilby Lewes Wanderers ESCA 65th Anniversary Events 29th May km GS/865 and 34.6km GS/866 Result Sheet Event Secretary: Timekeepers: Peter Moon (Eastbourne Rovers) Little Brook, 73 Wannock Lane, Eastbourne, East Sussex BN20 9SG Telephone: Mobile: Main Event: Mick Kilby (Lewes Wanderers) & Mick Irons (Worthing Excelsior) Hill Prime: Richard Blackmore (East Grinstead CC) & David Dunbar (Eastbourne Rovers) Firstly please accept my sincere apologies for the HQ not being open on your arrival; I am extremely embarrassed about the whole situation, but can ensure you, not only was it booked well in advance, but double checked on Friday too! Unfortunately the late opening of the hall put Ann and I under immense pressure, and we are upset to think it may have detracted from your enjoyment of what we had hoped would be a Special Event. Secondly I would like to thank everyone who rallied round to try and make the best of a bad situation, especially Sue Cox, George Taylor, and Val Hemsley. Finally, congratulations to the prize winners: Steve for the 65km, Christian for the 34km and Pete for the hill prime. I hope you enjoyed the course, and although a bit bumpy and lumpy in parts, I am sure you will agree it was a good challenging circuit!
