Plaistow was already home to many rich merchants and professionals who worked in the City, but it soon also became a hive of commercial activity, with developing industries as diverse as flour-milling, papermaking, silk-weaving and gunpowder manufacture setting up in the area. By the early 1900s, West Ham was described as The Factory Centre of the South of England with many businesses in construction, metalwork and engineering.
