1 How are local communities in Devon commemorating the centenary of the First World War? Community / Abbotskerswell Blackawton Bradninch Buckland Brewer Roll of Honour Project to research the 18 men on our War Memorial, funded by the HLF WW1 Then & Now Fund. We are writing an illustrated booklet about life in Abbotskerswell Renovation of the 3 graves of men from The 18 and cleaning family graves that carry memorials to others. We will also work with the local primary school and hold an exhibition where the HLF funded booklet can be distributed free of charge. Our local history group, AbbPast, will be holding a special meeting on 4th August to rededicate the graves and give our members first sight of the booklet. Blackawton War Memorial - Each year at the Remembrance Service at Blackawton War Memorial the names of those that died are read out with little or no knowledge of who they were. I have undertaken research on the Internet and have succeeded in finding some details of the soldiers and sailors concerned. In some cases I have found the man, but not the Blackawton connection. Community Exhibition on 10 th & 11 th May at Bradninch Guildhall incorporating information, photographs, letter, and other memorabilia relating to the WW1 period in Bradninch leant by members of the local community. RBL Poppy Quilt will be available to view during this time. WW1 recipe jams and chutneys, and mock marmalade made from carrots will be on sale. Grant acquired for renovation of war memorial Aim to raise funds to provide a memorial and new play equipment in the recreation ground, which was created as a living testament to those that perished. This new investment will be a fitting tribute to those that gave their lives for the future and the young. Buckland Brewer History will be researching World War One men in conjunction with the local school. We are happy to share ideas with other groups. 2 Chudleigh History Colyton Dartmouth Dawlish Exhibition in the parish church from 5 th 12 th July featuring artefacts, memorabilia and presentations, and the Touring British Legion Quilt (10-12 July). Commemorative Exhibition in Town Hall 2 nd & 3 rd August Illustrated talk from 7.30pm on 4 th August in parish church, again with the Touring British Legion quilt. History group is creating a memorial board dedicated to local men who were lost during the war which will be erected within the town hall. The new Colyton Heritage Centre opened on 3rd April. Staffed entirely by volunteers from the Parish History Society we are planning a series of commemorative events over the coming months. Dartmouth History Research are about to start a project to commemorate WW1. This will result in a presentation of snippets concerning Dartmouth people and a record of those listed on Dartmouth War Memorials. Further details to follow. Dawlish Town Council have initiated a project that engages the Dawlish Royal British Legion, Dawlish Library and Dawlish Museum, Dawlish Local History, the combined Churches and Dawlish Repertory Company. There will be a four year long programme to remember those who died in the War, or as a result of it. HLF funding has been secured for two years. Part of the concert will be dedicated to the seven men from Dittisham who lost their lives in the First World War and we will take this opportunity to discover more about these individuals, where they lived, worked and the part they played in the war to end wars. 3 Adults 8 (under 16s free) Ermington Parish Council have received grant funding to restore their First World War Memorial in the village. Exeter - Exwick Exwick has a booklet on "Exwick in the Great War". This was written in 1920 by the local School Master and a pdf of this can be found on the Exeter Memories website under Exwick as well as in the WSL. On the Exwick Roll of Honour there are listed over 120 men from the village who joined the forces. 14 of them are named on the War Memorial but 15 are named as casualties on the Roll of Honour. Details of these 15 men and where they are buried or remembered have been compiled and have been published in the Exwick Church Chronicle magazine over the last year. The Society is planning an exhibition on Saturday 2 nd August in St Michael s C of E Primary School, South Lawn Terrace where they hope to share stories of the First World War, and memorabilia from local people. Exeter War Hospitals Project - Small group research project looking into Exeter s Temporary War Hospitals and their unique status as VAD Hospitals that kept their original organisation even when the War Office took them over in See further details under news on the Devon Remembers website: A group of students are putting together a useful resource and a local event to commemorate The First World War. A team of cyclists intend to cycle a route that covers the western front from the Belgian coast to (almost) Switzerland, generating blogs, video diaries and educational resource online. 4 ABF, The Soldiers Charity. We intend to produce educational resources during the ride, which will take place in late August/early September, which will be of particular interest to schools. Exmouth Museum Ivybridge Kingsbridge Morchard Bishop Commemorating 1914 exhibition in Exmouth Museum until end October Exhibits include: Faces of the Great War - photographs from the period of Exmouth men who took part. Beacon School Logbook - extracts from the Boys School logbook covering the War years and detailing the 31 former pupils who were killed in the War together with our own detailed research on these men. Flying Ace - Douglas Carbery MC DFC was credited with 6 Air to Air combat victories. He survived the War and had a long and distinguished military career. We are exhibiting his badges and medal ribbons and photographs taken by Carbery of himself and colleagues and of downed German machines. We also have a model of a Royal Aircraft Factory BE 2c similar to one that he trained on and later flew on the Western Front. Ivybridge Town Council and British Legion branch are planting a poppy memorial garden and distributing poppy seeds to all local schools in remembrance of the 56 local soldiers who were lost during the First World War. Cookworthy Museum, with local RBL branch, local library and local history groups are seeking HLF funding for commemorative events during August in Kingsbridge: Event at the Kingsbridge Quay, the venue for inspections of horses to be sold for the war effort. Event to include talks and an exhibition on the horse sales and the impact on local farming life, and an open-air screening of War Horse Heritage family event to be held on the recreation ground, purchased after the war through public subscription. Bob Patten is writing a biography of each of the men on Morchard Bishop's WW1 Memorial and hopes to publish them in a booklet at the end of the project. 5 Northlew Shute Thurlestone (Parish of Buckland, Bantham & Thurlestone) Supported by Suttons Seeds, Northlew memorial Society is creating the Longest Poppy Avenue in the World planting 20 miles of verges from Okehampton to Broadbury with Flanders Poppy seeds. Rupert Brooke s poem The Solider will be engraved on a brass plaque and placed in a dedicated area of the historic village square, grassed and planted with poppies. Planting of a Canadian Oak with blood red foliage around armistice day, which will grow to be tallest in the village as a lasting memorial for generations to come. Commemorative event on 28 th June including 3D projected display onto old buildings around the square with newsreel reports and images, and a flyover by WW1 bi-planes. Exhibition over 3 weekends from 21 st June 6 th July with local memorabilia, photos, weapons and an interactive mannequin telling stories of life as a WW1 soldier. Hi - my name is Rick Wood has done some research into the Shute war memorial 1st world war names in East Devon. Please refer to web site (search for Shute War Memorial ) There is one name I am unable to trace - an S. Webber - does anyone you know have any clues? The Parish of Thurlestone Society is participating in a programme of events to commemorate the men whose names appear on the War Memorial on the village green. A small team of volunteers is researching the family history of these men and their military service records, and will be presenting their findings in the form of an exhibition in the Thurlestone Parish Hall over the August Bank Holiday week-end of 23, 24,25 August The British Legion Poppy Banner and Quilt will be on display over this period. A Cheese & Wine lunch will be held at the Parish Hall on Saturday 14 June at 1.00 pm to raise funds for the Parish commemoration events, and a 100 question Quiz is on sale (price 1.00) at the village Post Office & Store for the same purpose. A poppy seed sowing programme for selected areas of the Parish is also planned. The Thurlestone Phone Box Library committee will also be holding an evening event on Saturday 23 August from 6-8 pm with a 'singalong' of WW1 songs and complementary refreshments.
