Your Allnatt Centre will have been chosen because of its fantastic location, the friendliness and professionalism of our staff and our approach to our outdoor learning and adventure activities. Or maybe all three! We are an organisation with Vision. Our vision for the future is to provide brilliant residentials, both indoor and outdoor, all the year round and further increase our permanent team of people with exceptional knowledge and experience who will make a positive contribution to society. We will continue to operate with a vision; always planning ahead and developing our approach of engaging with young people in a meaningful and positive way. Our NCS programmes, School Camps and Autism Friendly Holidays are the next stage of this development. This guide includes information about your chosen venue, its coastal location, a flavour of what to expect from us, transport and parking, rooming information and some of your frequently asked questions are answered by the team at Allnatt Stop & Stay. This guide is not exhaustive and other useful information can be found across our website, our brochures and our quality assurance pack. Once you have made a booking you will be sent a Group Leader Information pack as part of your pre arrival documentation, in which we have collated an A - Z of frequently asked questions, a packing list and top tips from the hospitality and teaching teams to help plan your visit to us. 4 Fantastic Location FANTASTIC LOCATION Ventnor is on the southerly tip of the Isle of Wight, nestled in the shelter of St. Boniface Down. It is a vibrant community of locals, long-standing residents, seasonal and holiday visitors and the occasional celebrity. With a warmer and sunnier climate than most places around the UK, Ventnor has long been a magnet for writers, artists and creative folk, something that is still true today. For visitors to the Island, Ventnor is a wonderful place to spend some time and combines the best of all worlds; a quaint seaside setting coupled with a modern outlook There s a safe harbour, Ventnor Haven, where fishing boats drop their daily catch. This is also the perfect spot to enjoy the local delicacy, Crab n Chips. Today it is a village where time has stood still for its village pond, one pub and two churches. The area has witnessed a great deal of coastal erosion with a coastal management scheme at Monk s Bay put into place in 1991 ensuring the safety of East Dene for many years to come. There are excellent opportunities for meaningful field study work both here and at the nearby landslip whilst the tiny church of St Boniface is a special place for prayer, creative writing, meditation and personal space. Each year East Dene hosts many village events and has its heart in the community. Bonchurch lies in the undercliff to the east of Ventnor and is notable for its lovely mediterranean weather and for the many famous and distinguished writers who came here. ISLE OF WIGHT Situated just off England's South coast and less than 3 hours from London via the Isle of Wight Ferry, the UK's Holiday Island and Dinosaur Capital of Great Britain, the Isle of Wight is the perfect destination at any time of year. A passionate believer in Outdoor Learning, she is a highly respected professional in the wider outdoor learning sector. Denea Wright WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU TO EAST DENE East Dene, located within the village of Bonchurch, is a beautiful Victorian stone built mansion set in 10 acres of woodland, gardens and play areas. Boasting superb sea views, East Dene is one of the Island s premier outdoor education centres. Initially built in 1800, the mansion was extended in 1848 and played a leading role in the growth and development of the village. East Dene was once the home of the Victorian poet Algernon Swinburne and it is said that he found much of his inspiration in the beautiful wooded gardens of East Dene which overlook the sea. East Dene has played host to many eminent figures such as the Czar of Russia and Charles Dickens. Later John Snowdon Henry, MP for South Lancashire, took over ownership and clearly left his mark spending 90,000 of his fortune made in the cotton industry. Following the Snowdon Henry s were The Society of the Sacred Heart and the Order of St Augustine, during this time East Dene became their convent. East Dene then became a Guest House for the World Travel Association before opening as a Joseph Allnatt Centre. East Dene is a leading residential outdoor learning centre for school children and young people from Great Britain and Overseas. In addition it provides a wonderful venue for many other events and special occasions at weekends and during school holidays. The perfect venue for the younger age group of students, with facilities and programmes particularly suited for Year 4 and up. Programmes take advantage of the local environment for both Coastal and Woodland studies, with the focus firmly on Education, Inspiration & Play. Peaceful even when full, with open spaces for children to play and explore, with wildlife just outside our windows like badgers, pheasants, owls, woodpeckers and Red Squirrels it is a very special place. 6 Accommodation ISLE OF WIGHT On the Isle of Wight, we have a Victorian mansion, original Coach House and a splendid campsite. Set within 5 acres of woodland, with an outdoor heated swimming pool and a host of activities to stretch and challenge, the relaxed atmosphere of East Dene makes it an ideal learning environment! Nearby, Monks Bay is ideal for rock pooling and beachcombing. 7 Transport & Transfers TRANSPORT & TRANSFERS Allnatt Swanage Portsmouth London Paddington Allnatt Isle of Wight Folkestone Dover We do not arrange your inbound or outbound travel but we can book coaches to collect you from Folkestone, London Paddington or Portsmouth Harbour. Transfers on the Isle of Wight from ferry ports can be booked via our recommended coach providers and the cost added to your invoice. We do not automatically arrange travel and transfers but are happy to help and assist you with this aspect of your visit. Please talk to our sales & administration team if you need a quote providing. TRAVEL BY COACH On a fully taught programme, provided by our tutors and whilst on activities, all transport is provided for you during your visit. Note. Please talk to your chosen venue for details of nearby coach parking. For example, in Swanage, there is a public car park a 5 minute walk from the centre for which a permit can be bought if the coach is parking overnight. In Ventnor the coach park is 10 minutes away from East Dene. We have limited onsite parking for cars; we ask all groups to inform us of parking needs before the visit to ensure we can provide this. TRAVEL BY FERRY The Isle of Wight is reached by Ferry. There are two major providers. Wightlink, operating from Fishbourne, Portsmouth Harbour and Lymington. Red Funnel and Red Jet operate from Southampton. You can also reach us by Hovertravel from Southsea to Ryde. Our preferred travel provider is Red Funnel and we can book your coaches on our account at a discounted rate and this can be added to your invoice. Contact us to arrange a quote. TRAVEL BY TRAIN You can get to the Isle of Wight by train via Portsmouth Harbour and then onwards via Catamaran Ferry to Ryde Pier Head. Cross Island trains are available to Shanklin, which is roughly a 20 minute taxi or coach ride away from East Dene. The nearest train station to Swanage is in Wareham, Dorset, which is roughly a 20 minute taxi or coach ride away. South West Trains provide good links to various other destinations all over England, to and from here. We look forward to welcoming you at our venues and we hope you have a safe journey to us. 8 Parking At East Dene PARKING AT EAST DENE EAST DENE VENUE EAST DENE COACH HOUSE KEY AND INFORMATION Parking is limited at East Dene. The Purple marked areas show parking adjacent to East Dene, on our private property. There is space for 20 cars maximum at the main house and 2 at the Coach House. The Blue lines mark Roads / Public highway not owned exclusively by East Dene. Through Access is required at all times for our neighbours, emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and members of the public to access St Boniface Chapel. The White marked areas show where parking may be available but note these are on the public highway and may be full. Please be mindful of neighbouring properties when you park ensuring access is possible to gates and driveways at all times. LEISURE The lifeguarded heated swimming pool, which overlooks the sea, is always popular and open May to September. There is also a hot tub which is open all year round. Within the grounds are places to explore, sunbathe, walk and play hide and seek. There is direct access to Monks Bay and the coastal path. We provide a carefully balanced nutritional menu created by our own Chefs, designed to meet the latest Government standards on school meals. FLEXIBILITY We pride ourselves on our flexibility and desire to provide the right support and atmosphere for the needs of each individual client in all aspects of their stay with us. East Dene provides a personal planning service for every group visit. We cater for School Groups, Church Retreats, Overseas Groups, Music Groups, Birthday Celebrations, Wedding Receptions, Exhibitions, Christmas Parties and many more. East Dene is rapidly establishing itself as a major Isle of Wight venue for Festival and Entertainment, skilfully weaving this around Outdoor Education which remains at the heart of our business. The sea, the space and the ambience of East Dene create an atmosphere which is special and memorable.
