We are now only 10 days away from our Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic (July 10 th - 15 th ). I am praying for you as we make our final preparations for this amazing trip together! Because this is my first time taking a group of students and parents on an international mission trip, I tried to be as thorough as possible with the information included in this packet. I have also loaded this information on our website for your convenience. 3 Last minute reminders Based on the video from Jack Eason called Last Minute Information Please be willing to have a short devotional prepared to share with our team one morning or evening as we meet together each day. Don t forget to bring a pen with you on the plane to fill out your Declaration Form on our way down to the Dominican Republic and on the way back home You will need $10 cash (exact change is best) once we arrive in the DR. If you have any game ideas for the kids at Vacation Bible School, please let Justin know before we head out so we can get supplies together. Pray, pray, pray for our team and for the ones we will be working with in the DR. Schedule (Updated 7/1/18) Actuals projects while we are there may change slightly. 4 Transportation Here is our UPDATED flight information to and from the DR: We will be riding in vans/buses together once we arrive in the DR (we will be met by Easton & Nick & Pedro at the airport). 4

5 Accommodations Sosua by the Sea Convenient to the areas we serve and the places we will evangelize, this hotel has been serving missionaries for years. The layout of the grounds is ideal for worship, group devotional sessions and Bible study and will help create a team feel. Your Dominican Republic accommodations are included in the cost of your trip. (Any accommodations related to, or in preparation for your departure from or upon returning to the United States are not included. If, for example, you need to get a hotel prior to your departure close to your originating airport, that will be at your expense.) Packing & Luggage You will carry three (3) pieces of luggage, including one large suitcase that you will leave behind. The one LARGE Suitcase is the one you will CHECK under the plane; the other 2 will be your personal belongings to take on the plane. (If you or someone you know does not have an old suitcase to donate, purchase one inexpensively at a thrift store. Consider asking friends, relatives, and parishioners to help support your trip by donating some or all of the following items.) 1. Large check-in suitcase (for outbound travel only) not to exceed 50 lbs. Contents the church will supply: 6 boxes of crayons and 6 boxes of pencils a small personal fan 3 jars of peanut butter and 3 cans of tuna 2 bags/containers of peanuts 2 bottles of multi-vitamins and 2 bottles of Cod Fish Oil 1 deflated Basketball (continued on next page) 5

6 2 Zip-loc storage bags (for double-bagging contents) with bug spray, sunscreen, and any other tanning products you wish to use during your stay. Seal the bags, one inside the other, and write your name on the outside with a permanent Magic Marker/Sharpie pen. Disposable diapers of any size/age group, not to exceed roughly 15 lbs. 2. Backpack or purse 3. Suitcase that meets carry-on requirements Caution: Ensure within your carry-on bags liquids and toiletries do not exceed 3 oz. each. All toiletries weighing more than 3 oz. risk being confiscated by the TSA. Items like peanut butter must be checked, not carry-on As you are packing, don t forget: 1 flashlight and 1 rain plastic poncho 1 plastic drinking water bottle 1 can of bug repellant 1 small Bible / pen A one-piece bathing suit Garbage bag for clothing at the end of the week Feel free to leave bug spray, sunscreen, etc in the DR to be distribited Clothing The dress code for visiting missionaries is T-shirts and shorts or pants, and closed toe shoes during the project times. It is recommended that you bring six sets of clothes, one for travel and one for each of the five days laboring. Ladies: please be modest ( in clothing and swimsuit) as we are ministering to ladies involved in prostituion. Also, you will need a dress if a Dominican/Haitian Church visit is added to the schedule. We have to be culturally relevant. *A swimsuit is necessary for swimming. Women, please bring a cover-up to wear traveling to and from the pool. We also recommend you take old, second-hand, or thrift store clothes, one set for each workday. They should be suitable for painting, cleaning, and serving people in intense heat and severe living conditions. Bring at least one pair of old sneakers or shoes suitable for those days when we make trips to the dump that you can discard at the end of the trip. In the event that it rains (which is rare), boots are recommended for project days. 6

7 Financial Info Thank you so much to everyone who took part in our fundraising efforts over the last 6 months. Here is a review of all we raised and you paid prior to your final balance due: Initial Deposit (1/28): $100 Second Deposit (2/18): $100 Pancake Breakfast (3/11): $60 Airline Ticket Balance (3/25): $604 Easter Lilies (4/1): $17 Rib Dinners (4/21): $34 Golf Tournament (5/5): $163 Rent-A-Kid Projects/Donations: Various Note: an additional $50 was awarded to each missionary from our Advance 2020 fund Your final balances should have been paid to the church by now. If not, see Justin ASAP please. Recommended spending cash should not exceed $100. Optional snorkling will cost $25. You will need $10 (cash) once you get off the plane in the DR. Only other money you will need will be spending cash in the DR and food money during our layovers in the airport. The Dominican peso is the national currency; however, the American dollar is accepted everywhere. The trip fee covers all expenses in country, including food, water, and transportation and lodging. Bring only a small amount of money for any souvenirs you may wish to purchase, and limit this to one and five - dollar bills. (It's hard to bargain for a $ 5 item when all you have are $20s!) Consider bringing one credit card for emergencies. If exchanging money is necessisary (usually not), we will do so after we arrive in the airport. Additional Info Identification A photo ID (driver s license) and a passport are required. If you do not currently have a passport, you must apply for one at least 35 days prior to departure to ensure you receive it in time. Make two photocopies of your passport s ID photo page, give one to your emergency contact and keep one for yourself. Please make sure you have turned in passport pics to Justin ASAP (need to send these to Crossover and to our travel agent before we depart on July 10 th ). Immunization Visit your physician to let them know that you will be participating in mission work in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic and adhere to all immunization recommendations. Check with the CDC travelers health information. 7

8 Recommended for all travelers: Routine vaccines (Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanuspertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.) Recommended for some travelers: Hepatistis A (CDC recommends this vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in the Dominican Republic, regardless of where you are eating or staying.) and Typhoid (You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in the Dominican Republic. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.) Personal Items We recommend you do not bring jewelry, electronic devices, or other valuables. Cell phone service is not available; however, the lodge provides WiFi ($5 per day, not great quality). You will be provided a contact telephone number in advance of departure where you can be reached in case of emergency. There are safes (for personal items) in the rooms and the key can be obtained from the front desk. Water Use only bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. The lodge supplies bottled water, including in each room, and offers many bottled water stations. Bottled water will also be provided at all work locations. Phones & Photos There are certain places we can not take picutres (like at the garbage dump). We will let you know.
