1 /..1.13!>=-'-~}.. Central Oklahoma Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society Oklahoma Railway Museum, Ltd., Oklahoma City, Oklahoma December to be a busy month for ORM Thanksgiving is a time to count your blessings and one that comes to mind is the Oklahoma Railway Museum. We are very fortunate to have a group of individuals who continue to work hard to preserve Oklahoma's railroad heritage. Every time I go out to the Museum, I am always amazed at the amount of work that has been accomplished, especially in the last few years, and the projects that are ongoing. I wanted to thank Drake Rice for assisting with the November meeting and Larry Unnerstall for taking over the cooking of the hamburgers at the last meeting. December will be a busy month for ORM and there are a lot of opportunities for the members to volunteer_ The first event for ORM will be the 29th Annual OKC Train Show that will be held in the Travel & Transportation Building at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds on December 3 and 4_ The train show replaces our regularly scheduled December meeting. The train show, the largest one in the Southwest, provides a good opportunity for members to work the booth, help set-up or tear down, as well as move in the vendors on Friday. The hours are Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. If you are interested in helping make the show a success again this year, call Bob Cook at _ Next we have the special Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma Train and Christmas Party on December 10 from 2 pm until 4 pm at the Museum. ORM appreciates Flintco Construction's donation of presents for the children. This should be a special day for the children. If you want to volunteer for this event, contact Karen Riley at Inside this issue: Museum Update 2 A-OK Railroad Makes Donation 2 President's Column 4 Order Engraved Platform Bricks 7 Surf The Web In addition to these two events, ORM will be operating for the third year the Christmas Train on Saturday, December 17 from 9 am until 4:30pm. In addition to the train ride with Santa Claus, refreshments will be served and Christmas carols will be sung. There also will be photo opportunities with Santa. ORM will have special storytellers reading "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg. This is truly a family Christmas celebration_ Karen also would be the member to contact at about volunteering for this event. At this busy time of the year, your help is greatly appreciated. Larry D. 2 Museum Update... by Drake Rice, ORM secretary With the end of the operating season, Museum volunteers are turning their full attention on the various projects under way. Jim Murray and the Mechanical Department continue their work on the diner. They are taking out the entire old chill and steam system in preparation of the installation of the new heating and cooling system. This is in conjunction with the state Centennial Commission's work on the car for the Centennial in Charles Price, Bob Cosinart and Harry Currie continue working on the Burlington caboose repairs. This caboose is the oldest way car on display in Oklahoma and has wooden frame trucks. Signs for the Burlington waycar and the Frisco caboose have arrived and will be installed in the near future. Volunteers also are making the Museum look like Christmas with the decorating that is taking place. The "Make-A-Wish Foundation" and their annual Christmas Party will enjoy the decorations on December 10 at the Museum, as well as by visitors and passengers for the annual Christmas Trains during December. Karen Riley is heading up this project with a group of very dedicated volunteers. Many thanks go to all of the volunteers and Flintco Construction for their donation that will be used to purchase gifts for the children. Work continues on roof repair to the CORX-1, which was made possible by a grant from the Union Pacific Foundation. Harry Currie has been heading up this project. Christmas Train coming to ORM on December 17.., ~ -t~ Christmas Train tickets are now on sale for the Annual ORM Christmas Trains ~(:->~ on Saturday, December 17 at the Museum. This will be a fun event for the whole family. "' ;.- Tickets for the four trains (10:30 am, Noon, 1:30 pm and 3 pm) can be purchased 1 by calling 405/ All tickets are $12 each and children three-years-old and younger ride the train free. Credit cards are accepted. There are several other cars that need attention, so if you have interest in working on a project, please let Jim Murray know. There also are many projects that do not involve the rolling stock. This includes the Museum grounds and the rightof-way from NE 10th Street north to NE 36th Street. In addition, whistle boards need to be mowed around, signs painted and repairs made, tree limbs trimmed and limbs gathered up for disposal. We also have the fence project that was started last spring that needs to be completed. If you have some time, please come by any Saturday. In addition to the train ride, the price of admission includes a Polar Express Story Time with a guest storyteller in the historic Oakwood Depot. Santa Claus also will be making a visit and hot chocolate and cookies will be served. Other surprises await those attending this event. Be sure to order your tickets early since seating is limited. Tickets also can be purchased at the OKC Train Show on December 3-4 at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. A-OK Railroad makes donation to Museum The A-OK Railroad made a $650 donation to ORM. General Manager Dave Donoley, long time supporter of the Museum, made the donation after ORM organized the North American Rail Car Owners of America trip on the A-OK from McAlester to Red Oak and back on October 29. The money was the fees that the rail car owners paid to operate on the former Rock Island trackage that the A-OK now operates. Mr. Donoley has been a strong supporter over the years and hosted Museum members on train trips on the line and loaned the A-OK high rail dump truck for Museum use in the past. This donation is greatly appreciated by the Museum and shows support that the Museum has with short line railroads in the state. The rail car trip was held on a beautiful day, with great weather, lots of wild game and animals, like turkey, deer, foxes, ducks, etc. There were 10 motorcars and three high rail vehicles in the group. Lunch in Red Oak at the Red Oak Cafe was good for those who did not bring a lunch. At Wilburton, there was a tour of the locomotives on the A-OK, a look around the rail yard and a special treat of visiting with Mr. Donoley in his office, which was like a museum. All riders got coffee mugs with the A-OK logo and the ladies got A-OK hats. Everyone enjoyed the day and the Museum again appreciates Mr. Dave Donoley and the A-OK for allowing the Museum this opportunity and for the very nice donation. This donation will help ORM in its efforts to preserve Oklahoma railroad history. - Drake Rice, ORM Secretary

3 <She ~~~\u, ~Uork 0iml!J -..; nytirnes.com by Clifford J. Levy '7he New York Times" November 16,2005 NEW ORLEANS, November 15- Bourbon Street, with its show-mustgo-on swagger, is back, but another venerable symbol of this city has fallen on harder times. Herded into a terminal a couple of miles from the tourist territories are row after row of streetcars, their metal undercarriages diseased with rust. The city's three streetcar lines have been out of service since Hurricane Katrina, and it will cost more than $30 million to repair them. Their absence is not just a blow to visitors looking to sample a bit of quaint New Orleans conveyance to go with their crayfish and jazz. The streetcars were also a mainstay for residents poor and rich, offering a convenient $1.25 ride through the business district and nearby. Before the hurricane hit, transit officials returned the 24 streetcars on the Canal Street line to their terminal, which then had several feet of flooding for two weeks. The brackish water ate away some of the red paint on the streetcars and corroded their wheels and motors. The Streetcars Don't Run Here Anymore The Canal Street line actually started service only last year, with new streetcars, on a route that was shut down in Its resurrection was seen as a milestone in the city's efforts to bolster its sagging economy and quality of life. A second line, on St. Charles Avenue, fared better in the wake of the hurricane, with its 35 streetcars safely parked in a dry terminal. The St. Charles Avenue line is the real deal, considered one of the oldest continuously running streetcar systems in the world. Since the 1920's, it has used the same streetcars, a charming model that is not especially pleasant to ride in the summer because it cannot be fitted with air-conditioning. Still, while the St. Charles streetcars are fine, the overhead wires that power the line were wrecked. Six of the seven streetcars on a third line, the Riverfront, which opened in the 1980's, suffered the same damage as those on the Canal Street line. (You were going to ask, so here's the answer: the Desire streetcar line made famous by the Tennessee Williams play met its demise in 1948.) Rosalind Blanco Cook, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, said it was hoping that federal aid would pay the $1 million bill to repair each of the Canal and Riverfront streetcars. The St. Charles Avenue line should cost far less, but with so many people still lacking power, fixing the wires is not a priority. For now. buses are running along the streetcar lines, though those are not in great supply either. More than half of the system's buses were damaged in the hurricane and its aftermath. A few were recovered as far away as Houston. With much of the city's population still gone and some areas uninhabitable, buses are operating on only a third of routes, with free fares. Before the storm, there were 143,000 daily rides on the system, Ms. Cook said, about a quarter of them on streetcars. Edward J. Branley, a streetcar enthusiast who runs a Web site devoted to the New Orleans system ( na lstreetca r.coml}, said he had first worried that the hurricane had demolished the fleet. Now he is worried that the system will languish. "It's nothing that can't be fixed," Mr. Bran ley said. "My big fear is, will the feds put up the money to fix them?" New Orleans streetcars are the rusty victims of Hurricane Katrina, with the city's three lines out of service. Michelle V. Agins, The New York Times S~pp/emental Sign. 4 A/I Aboard! November 2005 Greetings To All! Harry Currie ORM President A year sounds so far off, but it goes by in such a short time. Here we are at Thanksgiving again. holiday to take some time and give thanks for all the great blessings that we have been given this past year. What a great Our Museum has had another great year with challenges met with success and improvements due to a lot of tremendous efforts by individuals working together. Our partnership with the Oklahoma Centennial Commission has really been a blessing. With their help with many of our Museum physical improvements, the Commission has added tremendously to our Museum. Just three years ago, we were getting our rolling stock, rail cars and engines that had been stored at Watonga, Oklahoma for years to Oklahoma City. Last month we received our new (to us) chair cars that we purchased from a dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. It is hard to believe that we now have five engines, six passenger cars, one baggage car, one dining car, five cabooses, three boxcars, three tank cars, three flat cars, plus two engines in North Texas and two OG&E cranes for a total of 31 rail cars. That is a pretty large fleet and over one half still needs work done on them. There will always be maintenance required. We might say we have ongoing opportunities. This coming year hopefully the dining car will be refurbished inside and out, and we are planning on additional track repair, which will be a large expenditure. We also have additional work on our rolling stock, such as body repair, preparation and painting. Hopefully, this coming year we will be granted just as much success as the past year. Don't forget about the upcoming December activities with the OKC Train Show on December 2 followed by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma Christmas Party on December 10 and our Territorial Christmas Train Day on December 17. If you would like to volunteer to help with the Train Show call Bob Cook at and Karen Riley at for the other two events. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we should take the time to pause and give thanks for all we have, which compared to the Pilgrims in the 1620s when they gave thanks for the bountiful crops and their shelters they lived in, there is no comparison, regardless how bad things could be for you. Have A Great Month! Harry Currie

6 Train derails in Midwest City Here's some more photos of the derailment on October 10 of the SKOL railroad westbound sand train that derailed at Red Horse near North Sooner Road in Midwest City, destroying 12 loaded (135,000 lbs. each) cars of sand, according to Harry Currie, ORM President. who provided the photos. The cause of the wreck was due to the loss of a journal on one of the cars eight miles east of the mishap. When the bad wheels hit the switch at Red Horse, it all went into the ditch. Synthetic crossties get the test (BNSF) Wooden crossties are still the mainstay of the railroad and have been since the 1800s, but they and concrete ties are beginning to see a little competition from new synthetic crossties made, of all things, from recycled plastic. Since 2002, BNSF has replaced about 20,000 worn-out wood ties with synthetic ties. Most of the ties have been installed in the Gulf Cost areas, including the Houston, Lafayette and Galveston subdivisions, where rot and insects significantly shorten the life of wood ties. Synthetic ties are made up of about 80 percent recycled materials, byproducts from industrial manufacturing. Since 1990, BNSF has followed synthetic tie development with great interest and has examined and priced the ties produced by about a dozen manufacturers. Although most of the manufacturers use recycled materials for their ties the variety of materials, ' technologies and designs they employ differ. To date, BNSF has tested synthetic ties produced by three companies. So far, the synthetic ties seem to be enduring well, says BNSF's Director of Track Standards and Procedures John Bosshart. They can last up to 50 years, whereas wood ties last only about 30 years, and far worse under hot. humid conditions. "So far, the synthetic ties seem to be holding up well," says Bosshart. "Laboratory tests show that plastic ties may last up to 35 years longer than wood ties." Although the useful lives of the two types of ties are different, they are installed in much the same way. Synthetic ties are pre-bored, and standard spikes can be used to drive them into the ground. They can't be driven in by hand, however, because the spikes tend to bounce out of the plastic-like material. The two types of ties also weigh roughly the same amount and they even look a lot alike, says Bosshart. There are a couple of drawbacks to the synthetic ties, however. Although they hold up well to compression, they are somewhat less flexible than wood ties. They also cost about twice as much. With the price of oil rising, Bosshart doesn't anticipate that the price of synthetic ties will come down anytime soon, given the fact that oil is a primary plastics ingredient. However, synthetic ties could prove cost effective when it comes to replacing switch ties, he says. Longer wooden ties used for switches cost significantly more than shorter, regular wood ties. By contrast, the price difference between longer synthetic switch ties and shorter synthetic ties is much less steep, which could make them more economical than wood. Railroad purists need not worry that synthetic will supplant wood ties anytime soon, though. BNSF's 32,000 miles of track consist of an estimated 131 million ties. Twenty-thousand made of synthetic material are just a molten drop in the bucket.
