2 A. READING COMPREHENSION (20 marks) A.1 Read the following text carefully. People have enjoyed the thrill of roller coasters for hundreds of years. Roller coaster rides began in Russia. Over 300 years ago, people made slides out of wood and ice for winter festivals. A slide could be as tall as an eight storey building. At first people carved seats into ice blocks to make slippery sleds. Then they climbed up a set of stairs at the back of the slide. It was a wild and unsafe ride, as the ice blocks had no brakes. Sand at the bottom of the slide helped slow them down. 1. Match these sentences by writing the numbers in the box. (2 marks) 1. Roller coasters have been used started in Russia. 2. The first roller coaster rides by a set of stairs at the back of the slide. 3. The oldest roller coaster rides for many years. took place 4. The people climbed the roller in winter. coaster 2. Tick ( ) to show whether each sentence is TRUE or FALSE. (2 marks) Example: People have enjoyed roller coasters for 100 years. a) The first sleds were made of ice. b) The first roller coasters were very safe. c) The first roller coasters had steal breaks. d) The sand at the bottom of the slide helped them to slow down. TRUE FALSE San Ġorġ Preca College, HY Exams 2018, English Year 5 Page 2 of 12
3 A.2 Read the following passage carefully. The Twister Michelle slumped in her seat as the bus pulled into the amusement park. She had been on roller coasters before, but she didn t like them. She was terrified of the slow climb to the top at the start of the ride. But her friends were excited to ride the Twister, so she was going to have to find some way to get through it. Let s get in line for the Twister, Ashley said as soon as the bus stopped. Tina, Beth, and Shauna nodded excitedly. Michelle gulped. Ashley dropped back and grabbed Michelle s arm to speak to her. Ashley told Michelle that she was also afraid of riding the Twister, as she heard that the first drop is awful, and her sister threw up after all the twists and loops. Michelle suggested that they could go on another ride. Ashley quickly refused as she felt that being scared is what makes it fun. Would you want to go on a baby ride that goes really slow and just turns in a big circle? Ashley asked. No. That s boring. Michelle replied. Exactly. It s boring because it s not scary. Maybe Ashley was right, thought Michelle to herself. Ashley squeezed Michelle s arm and suggested they should sit up front as it was the scariest seat. Mrs. Grayson asked Michelle if she was sure about sitting in the front during the ride. San Ġorġ Preca College, HY Exams 2018, English Year 5 Page 3 of 12
4 Although it was going to be really scary, Michelle felt that if they re going to ride the Twister, they might as well get the best seats. Ashley led her group to the front of the line and sat down in the first seat as Michelle felt shivers run down her spine. The lap bar clicked into place. Enjoy the ride, the operator said. Michelle nodded. We will. Adapted from The Twister by Kelly Hashway Answer the following questions. 1. Underline the correct word. (3 marks) a) Michelle (was afraid, was not afraid) of roller coasters. b) Michelle (had been, had not been) on roller coasters before. c) The children stayed on the (front, back) seats. 2. Find from the passage. (3 marks) a) Another WORD which means the same as swallowed. b) A phrase of FIVE words which shows that Michelle felt really scared. c) Find how many friends went together at the amusement park. San Ġorġ Preca College, HY Exams 2018, English Year 5 Page 4 of 12
5 3. Underline the statement about Michelle which is TRUE. (1 mark) a) She got sick last time she was on a roller coaster. b) She has never been on a roller coaster before. c) She dislikes the slow climb at the beginning of a roller coaster. 4. Answer the following questions. a) Who felt sick on the Twister? (1 mark) b) Why did Ashley suggest that they should stay on the front seats? (2 marks) c) Do you think Michelle really wants to go on the roller coaster? How do you know? (2 marks) 5. Put the following sentences in order as the events happened in the passage. (4marks) Ashley tells Michelle she s afraid of the Twister. The operator wished the girls an enjoyable ride. 1 The bus pulls into the amusement park. Michelle suggests going on a different ride.
