14 Attractions by George Bailey Journey Behind the Falls Start Here! TABLE ROCK Begin your Niagara Parks adventure at the landmark building next to the Horseshoe Falls Table Rock. Stand next to the thundering water then come inside this historic location and let Welcome Centre representatives help you plan to make the most of your visit. Enjoy the spectacular view from the upper level of the Grand Hall and explore two levels of attractions, dining and shopping. You can easily reach Table Rock from all local hotels as it is the main transfer hub for the WEGO bus system or ride the Falls Incline Railway from the Fallsview Tourist Area. Journey Behind the Falls How much fun is this?! Take an elevator down to the bottom of the gorge and stand right next to the Horseshoe Falls! The wind, the water, the noise...truly spectacular. This was a great experience. Visitor from South Carolina If you want to experience Niagara Falls up close, don t miss Journey Behind the Falls, one of North America s top attractions. I ve been here many times, but I still remember the first time I saw the water tumbling down in front of me. I was in awe. After donning protective rain gear I rode an elevator to tunnels below and behind the Falls. One tunnel went to an outdoor observation plaza below the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The sight, sound and power of Niagara were mind-boggling. Another tunnel led behind the Falls, where two portals allowed me to get even closer with Niagara. Visitors to Niagara Falls have been taking trips to the base of the Falls since the mid 1820 s. Some of the earliest operators even provided a certificate attesting you survived the trip. Today's Journey Behind the Falls operates year-round, continuing to provide the thrills that millions have enjoyed for centuries. Scan for feature video or go to fun.visitniagaraparks.com 14 DINING Feeling hungry? Visit any Niagara Parks restaurant for great dining with views like nowhere else on the planet. Elements on the Falls, on the upper level of Table Rock, is as close to the Falls as you can get. Edgewaters Restaurant, at Queen Victoria Place, has the perfect patio to enjoy the nightly illumination of the Falls or the summer concert and Fireworks series. See Pg.34 for more Dining options ATTRACTIONS

15 Niagara s Fury When I visited this attraction for the first time I wasn t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. Before I entered the attraction, I was given a raincoat. This was my first clue that I might get wet and I did! It is an educational experience where I learned how Niagara Falls was formed, and where it turned out, I would experience Niagara like never before. An animated film featuring Chip the Beaver and his friends explained the formation of the Falls, then we moved to a large platform where the temperature dropped (it was actually cold) and the platform started to tremble and snow and rain lashed against my body. I encountered the furor of Mother Nature along spectacular panoramic views of the Falls and the Niagara River taken by helicopter. The special effects were truly amazing. Having worked in the Niagara Falls tourism industry for many years visitors often ask me about Niagara s hidden gems. I tell them without hesitation to visit White Water Walk. You descend in an elevator to a tunnel that leads to the edge of turbulent lower Niagara River Rapids. The sight always overwhelms me. All this water, flowing from four Great Lakes, crashes over the Falls and then squeezes through the narrowest point of the Niagara River. Ferocious waves make these class 6 rapids some of the most dangerous in the world. Stroll along the boardwalk and see how the receding Falls eroded the underlying rock and carved out this spectacular deep gorge. You ll see history written in rock. Interesting and educational posters along the boardwalk and throughout the attraction explains all of this. The White Water Walk shouldn t be missed. White Water Walk White Water Walk: Class 6 rapids hurtling down the canyon at speeds over 40 km hour. This was spectacular and scary at the same time. Strategically placed viewing platforms enabled the best views possible of the raging waters. Absolutely fantastic and the adjoining scenery makes for some awesome photographs. Visitor from Canada has over 3,274 acres of parkland! The Whirlpool Aero Car is sure to give you a #thrill! Whirlpool Aero Car The best way to see the fascinating Whirlpool is to ride the famous Whirlpool Aero Car. A basket-like car rides smoothly to and fro along 6 sturdy cables suspended high above the turbulent Niagara Whirlpool. I like to think of it as, Niagara s Grand Canyon. The car was originally designed by a Spanish engineer, and has been operating for almost 100 years with a perfect safety record. On a recent trip, Mike of Pennsylvania told me, We can t get over how smooth the ride is. Although I have a bit of a fear of heights this didn t faze me one bit. The stampeding water below us is something we ll all remember for the rest of our lives. This attraction has something to offer at all times of year, but my favourite is October, when the surrounding trees are on fire with the colours of autumn. ATTRACTIONS 15

26 Old Fort Erie battle re-enactment by Barbara Ramsay Orr Laura Secord Homestead Old Fort Erie: We went to the re-enactment of the Battle of Fort Erie. The tour of the Fort itself was also very interesting and our guide was excellent. They also did demonstrations with various cannons and firearms. There even was a working kitchen where visitors were treated to cookies and lemonade. A must see if you are into history. Visitor from New England If you stand on the Chippawa Battlefield in early morning, the light, the field, the atmosphere will be much as it was 200 years ago, when British, Canadian and Aboriginal soldiers met American forces to fight a bloody battle. It is the best preserved gunpowder era battleground in North America. It's part of the reason that history doesn't just reside in Niagara; it lives here. Events that happened in Niagara formed important elements of Canada's collective history, and those events come brilliantly to life, particularly in 2014, the final bicentennial year of the pivotal battles for control of the border between Canada and the U.S.. Heritage events begin in June, when you can retrace the footsteps of Laura Secord on a 32 km hike that follows her heroic efforts to warn British troops of an attack by American soldiers. (Canada s Prime Minister Stephen Harper's wife Laureen did it!) The expanded Laura Secord Homestead in Queenston gives an accurate glimpse of preconfederation village life, and the Visitors Centre and relocated Old Methodist Chapel are well worth exploring. I have to confess to a weakness for the Laura Secord dark chocolate caramels in the shop - not historic but highly addictive. On July 5, re-enactors from across North America will bring the Battle of Chippawa to stirring life. It was in this battle that American troops first wore grey jackets, due to a shortage of blue material, and the 26 HERITAGE

Great service, lovely setting and very friendly staff. Would highly recommend it. Visitor from Burlington Laura Secord Homestead Nice to see where she lived and the type of dwelling of the day. Also a great historical landmark and person. We celebrate the Bicentennial and Laura Secord was a great instrument and heroine 200 years ago. Heather from Niagara Falls Laura Secord Homestead grey jacket lives on in the uniform of West Point cadets. Next is the Battle of Lundy's Lane, the scene of another crucial military encounter. On the anniversary, July 25, everyone is invited to sign up to be part of the battle re-creation, to walk in the footsteps of soldiers from 200 years ago, to meet, in friendship this time, at the battle site on Drummond Hill. Dining at McFarland House A more explosive celebration happens on August 9-10 to commemorate the Siege of Old Fort Erie. "The Siege weekend is the largest annual re-enactment event in Canada," Jim Hill, the resident heritage expert at Niagara Parks, explains. "We've been blowing ourselves up every year for 28 years!" Fireworks mimic the havoc that occurred when a large powder magazine exploded and candlelight tours take visitors past vignettes that bring poignant moments to life. The Royal Scots Regiment calls the roll to see which soldiers are left alive, and combat nurses treat the wounded. This battle was the first recorded use of combat nurses, who were paid and served, treating 2,000 wounded men. "Be warned!" Hill tells me. "The candlelight tours are noisy and smoky, but they really make history live." New Heroes & Legends heritage tours around Table Rock Welcome Centre, the Tea Room and gardens at McFarland House, the print history at Mackenzie Printery all preserve and celebrate our Canadian heritage stories. "Earlier generations in Niagara faced horrific events, but in the end, wrote treaties that have kept the peace for 200 years," says Hill. "These are important lessons, and important touchstones about who we are." Discover those touchstones at Niagara Parks this year. Mackenzie Printery: We were blown away by this little treasure. The guides in the Printery had a wealth of knowledge about the history and how the different kind of printers work. We were able to print out our own contract to work in the Printery with our names on it. The kids were able to help with the printing. 28 Naturally Niagara Discover Niagara s true nature by Ilona Kauremszky Explore the many ways to experience the stunning natural landscape of Niagara Parks. Go for a hike in the Niagara Glen and marvel at the prehistoric geological formations; take a leisurely bike ride along the Niagara River Recreation Trail; or join the many birders on the lookout for the rare and exciting species that call Niagara home. Bike trails and footpaths meander through serene Carolinian forest, and meet the Niagara Escarpment s Bruce Trail at historic Queenston Heights Park. Niagara River Recreation Trail Get ready to Biking cycle what once was famously dubbed by Winston Churchill as The prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world a.k.a the Niagara Parkway. There s so much wild natural beauty to discover in Niagara Parks. Cyclists can choose from various routes but my favourite is the Niagara River Recreation Trail. The entire circuit hugs the riverbank from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake and is a fabulous choice for nature seekers of all ages. Hop on the WEGO bus and head to the bike rentals at the Whirlpool Aero Car for this leisurely journey weaving past shady oak groves. I stop at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens to smell the roses and hear 28 NATURE

29 Niagara Glen: My wife, kids and I had a wonderful afternoon hiking and getting close to nature. It was one of those memories we made as a family we will always remember fondly. Just us, the kids and the sunshine laughing and having a great time. I can't begin to describe how much fun our holiday to the Falls was this year Jeff from Toronto Hiking Niagara Glen Niagara Glen potholes Niagara Parkway that deer spotting is a popular pasttime during dusk. At Queenston Heights, the historic Brock s Monument has a discreet plaque by the entrance dedicated to Roy s Terrace, the birthplace of Niagara Falls. It s also home to the southernmost terminus of the legendary Bruce Trail. I can scan the breathtaking Niagara Peninsula, the aqua Lake Ontario on the horizon from a scenic look-out but it was at the historic McFarland House where all this nature came together. One of Niagara s earliest tourists, poet Thomas Moore, once rested his head under an old oak tree there and wrote: If there is peace to be found in this world a heart that is humble might find it here. Indeed the natural treasures of Niagara continue to inspire. Hiking I m at the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve watching the biggest Mother Nature show before my eyes. No crowds - it s only critters here. Every time I visit I discover something new. Visit the Nature Centre to register for a guided tour, or head towards the picnic area to begin exploring on your own: scan the map by the staircase and descend into an out ofthis-world odyssey. Surrounded by Carolinian Forest, ancient rocks and some of the oldest fossils on the planet, this prehistoric paradise unfurls the senses. Mom and I like to crane our necks skyward to view the massive rocky high-rises. Boulders strewn everywhere resemble the handiwork of a Giant who s rolled the dice. Then we traipse down rocky staircases using our trusty walking sticks for the steeper descents that lead us to the money shot the Devil s Hole Rapids. First you hear the roar, the boom of thundering waves, battering the rocks, then you see the Niagara River in all its magnificence. Mom finds a quiet spot absorbing in the sublime nature and Dad talks about the river s power, reminiscing on his fishing expeditions. For this world traveller each time I return, the sheer beauty takes my breath away. Queenston Heights Scan for feature video or go to nature.visitniagaraparks.com NATURE 29

30 In Search of Inspiration by Theresa M. Forte Botanical Gardens Arboretum Botanical Gardens: We spent a delightful half hour on a horsedriven tour of the gardens. It was just lovely! We had no idea about the horticulture school there, or the extensive collections they have. This was a great way to relax and see all the gardens. Highly recommended. Visitor from Toronto Where do you find the words? Bruna, my octogenarian mother-in-law, wondered. She could not imagine finding enough words to fill my weekly garden column. When I m looking for ideas, I just grab my camera and visit the Niagara Parks gardens, my go-to source for inspiration. I enter the Botanical Gardens through the main entrance, where carpets of seasonal bulbs, perennials, ornamental grasses and hardy roses stretch right out to the Niagara Parkway to welcome me. A pathway leads through the heart of the garden. Sometimes, I ll branch off to visit the Butterfly Garden, or stop by the new Legacy Garden to see how the garden is progressing. My regular route follows the main trail to the formal Herb, Victorian Rose or Mediterranean Parterre Gardens; each space offers a glorious escape from my busy world. An August visit will see me head straight for the Vegetable Garden to photograph artfully displayed crops how I wish my vegetables looked this good. Whether I m writing about winterblooming witch hazels, container gardens, unusual vegetables, or 30 Botanical Gardens GARDENS

I usually head out early on a Sunday morning and give myself a few hours to explore the Botanical Gardens. Not to be missed: The Butterfly Conservatory North America s largest glassenclosed home to over 2,000 butterflies! Garden Horse & Carriage Rides Get your tickets at the Butterfly Conservatory Gift Shop. Floral Showhouse & Artists Garden Just steps from the mighty Falls, the Floral Showhouse, a blend of traditional Victorian and modern designs, is one of my favourite haunts. I shed my coat, step into the circular rotunda and soak up the rich, healing colours. Seasonal displays extend into the glass house to my right; tropicals, orchids and splashing water fill the tropical house to my left. Tropical birds dart overhead, their songs fill the air. Before leaving, I stop by the pond to acknowledge a group of turtles, deftly camouflaged as they laze on the rocks. Must see: The Artists Garden, nestled in a grove beside the greenhouse, offers spectacular autumn colours. Richly planted perennials, canna and annuals, brilliant foliage, and a soothing pond make this one of my favourite spots to photograph. Christmas display with oldfashioned miniature buildings, decorated by the staff and lit for the holidays. Queen Victoria Park: Oakes Garden Theatre, Rose Garden & Perennial Garden I love an after-dinner stroll through the gardens of Queen Victoria Park. The scent of roses perfumes the summer air, as I walk hand-in-hand with my husband, enjoying the graceful gardens and the memories we share of this serene garden. As young adults, we would sit here and talk for hours. Lattice arbours drip with climbing roses, traditional perennials and seasonal bulbs mark the passing seasons with a parade of colour. 32 Battlefield 18th Three exceptional courses, one spectacular location by Garry But what amazing shape Whirlpool Golf course was in this Course used to beat me up. 38 on back is memorable 2 birds, 1 a chip-in Niagara Parks offers three championship golf courses designed by arguably the top three golf course architects in Canadian history. Whirlpool Golf Course was laid out by Canadian Golf Hall of Famer Stanley Thompson in Tom McBroom (Ussher s Creek) and Doug Carrick (Battlefield) designed the two championship courses at Legends on the Niagara and they codesigned Chippawa, the 9-hole short course. Legends covers over 400 hectares (1000 acres), nearly a third of which are the preserved War of 1812 Chippawa Battlefield. When you play the Battlefield course stop on the fourth tee, read the historic plaque commemorating the battle, and let your mind wander. They say if it s quiet you may still hear the sound of cannons roaring and volleys of rifle fire as the two armies faced each other on that fateful July day in If you happen to be from the United States, you may feel a rush of pride since this battle marked the first time American regulars defeated British regulars. It was so significant for the American army that the cadets at West Point to this day wear grey uniforms patterned after those worn by General Scott s troops. Carrick s Battlefield course weaves its way through woods and open grasslands that have a somewhat Scottish links appearance. Holes 9 and 18 sweep around either side of a 19 acre lake with the large clubhouse, which resembles an 1800s era fort, rising out of the water. 32

33 Visit niagaraparksgolf.com join the VIP Club for special offers, and to get your free copy of the Niagara Parks Golf App go mobile to book tee times, view course tours and much more. Legends on the Niagara Clubhouse Whirlpool 2nd Whirlpool is ranked by Score Golf as #11 in all of Canada for value, #55 in top public courses. Legends on the Niagara is designated a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary", recognizing Niagara Parks strong commitment to protecting the environment. Legends on the Niagara Ussher s Creek 6th Legends on the Niagara is proud to host two prestigious Golf Canada events in 2014 at Battlefield: the Canadian Women s Tour, June the Canadian Junior Boys Championships, July 26 August 1 The Battlefield course hosted the LPGA Tour s 2004 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women s Open and received critical acclaim from top players in the world. You ll get a very different feel playing the Ussher s Creek course which reminds many people of the rugged style courses of Muskoka. The creek comes into play on 9 holes as it winds its way through thick stands of trees and passes two large ponds and wetlands. Before you tee off, warm up at the unique practice facility. It s a 360 degree driving range, the only one of its kind in Canada. Whirlpool Golf Course is a favourite of area golfers. It has a timeless quality and features a number of holes with elevated tees and greens, one of Thompson s trademarks. Holes 6, 12 and 16 all have their tees in an elevated area called The Hub. Even if you re not playing the back tees make sure you take the stairs up to the top for a beautiful view of the course and the Niagara skyline in the distance. And on the short par three 14th, look to your right for a view of the Botanical Gardens. There s so much to see at the Niagara Parks courses that it can be hard to concentrate on your game. 34 5 local eateries with the most stunning views of Niagara by Lynn Ogryzlo Sometimes I m craving to be wrapped in serene beauty and other times I m hungry for the drama of Niagara Falls. Dining by view is a prime ingredient in these five local eateries. Elements on the Falls Restaurant Upscale Casual Elements on the Falls Restaurant We LOVED this restaurant! Amazing views and the best servers. We enjoyed everything we ate. The desserts are fabulous! It is worth a trip for a glass of wine and dessert with a view. Jayne from Baltimore Teetering on the brink of it all, Elements on the Falls always brings me close up and personal with Niagara s thundering water. The excitement continues inside with burgers on brioche, avocado in spring rolls and Grilled Bosc Pear and Blue Cheese Salad. My favourite from Chef Elbert Wiersema is the Creamy Asiago, Goat Cheese, Spinach and Artichoke Dip with Grilled Buttermilk Naan Bread. Elements tapas menu has been wildly successful for drop-in diners who simply want to sip and nibble their way through one of the best Niagara Falls experiences. 34 CULINARY

35 Queenston Heights Restaurant Upscale Casual Tucked neatly into Niagara s most beautiful park of the same name, Queenston Heights Restaurant is perched on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. The patio provides the best views of the Niagara River romantically winding its way down to Lake Ontario. Prepare to relish Executive Chef Bill Greenan s flavourful dishes; they pack an incredible punch. Try the grilled salmon with wasabi aioli or the ale braised lamb shank.the combination of a romantic building and dramatic scenery has made it a popular wedding destination. Legends on the Niagara Restaurant Gourmet Pub Truth be known, I don t golf, but I can be seen dining at Legends. I love the light and airy, Muskoka cottage décor, the surrounding oasis of green hills and views of the lake. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of a beautiful bride and an elegant outdoor wedding; how fun. The Family Favourites Clubhouse offers Chef Chris Brown s Pan-seared Salmon Salad with Blueberry Sparkling White Wine Dressing, Fresh Fruit and Mixed Greens. Make your Garlic Bread with the works topped with hot peppers, bacon, fourcheese blend and bruschetta salsa. Time for a light meal or a refreshment break? Visit Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza, Ah So Sushi and find popular Coca-Cola and Nestle products throughout Niagara Parks. Try exclusive quick serve fare at the Butterfly Café, Whirlpool Aero Car, Table Rock Grill and Grand View Restaurant. Today s Bride Magazine selected Queenston Heights Restaurant as one of the top 35 wedding destinations in the world! Queenston Heights Restaurant: The food was superb along with the service. But the main attraction is of course the stunning view of the Niagara River and the escarpment. Malcolm from Toronto Edgewaters Restaurant Gourmet Pub Pub-style cuisine tucked away neatly in a Victorian building, Edgewaters is full of surprises. Surprise #1, it offers front row seating to the Fireworks over Niagara Falls. Surprise #2, it s an in-demand wedding destination and Surprise #3, Edgewaters Chef Sidney Krick s Signature favourites include Lakeland Rainbow Trout Tacos with Shredded Lettuce, Pico de Gallo and Sour Cream Cilantro Pesto or Herb- Crusted Shepherd s Pie. This classic of stewed beef and root vegetables with aromatic herbs with roasted garlic mashed potato topping, is the icing on the cake. The menu also offers a great selection of local Craft Beer and Niagara VQA Wine pairings. Whirlpool Restaurant Gourmet Pub In a perfect spot on the Niagara Parkway, surrounded by manicured greenery and natural beauty, is the Whirlpool Restaurant overseen by Chef Tim LandeLaar. Try the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich on a toasted bakery bun. This beauty is about juicy chicken strips wrapped in a crunch and draped in a layer of zesty cheddar. Ask for the hulking plate of Cajun-crisp fries to go with that. After lunch, take a walk along the bike path for stunning views of the Niagara River rarely appreciated. Edgewaters: Having dinner with a view of the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls was truly a treat. The food was top notch also. Stay after dusk and enjoy a beverage and watch the colorful light display on the Falls. Visitor from Ohio CULINARY 35
