1 2012 PRESTATE ANALYSIS (POST STATE ANALYSIS BELOW) By Will Woodward (ran 15:25 at Sun Willows 1993) and Rod Wilcox King s XC From the six-time defending champion North Central boys team - one of the best teams in the nation - to the Burlington Edison girls team qualifying for their first State meet ever, Nov. 3 will bring together in Pasco any number of interesting stories. Here are a few of them. FIRST STATE APPEARANCES Four boy s teams and six girl s teams will make their first State appearance. For the girls, the 3A races lack a newcomer. 4A Todd Beamer, 2A Burlington Edison, 1A Royal, 1A Kalama, 1A Elma and B Saint John Endicott all qualify for the first time ever. For the boys, the 4A, 3A and 2A races lack a newcomer. 1A Woodland, B Manson, B Three Rivers Christian, and Chief Leschi all qualify for the first time. Welcome to the show. Last year 11 teams qualified to the State Championships for the first time ever. Of those teams only two, Shorewood Christian boys and Union girls returned for a second trip to Pasco. OUTSIDE LOOKING IN Since 1973 there have been 262 schools that have qualified a girls team to State. That leaves 80 schools still looking for a trip to Pasco. The 80 is made up of forty B schools, ten 1A schools, eight 2A schools, fourteen 3A schools and eight 4A schools. Since 1959 there have been 304 schools that have qualified a boys team to State. That leaves 36 schools still looking for a trip to Pasco. The 36 is made up of twenty two B schools, eight 1A schools, three 2A schools and five 3A schools. In 2011 Union and Todd Beamer boys teams qualified to State for the first time. They were the only 4A schools not to have made the trip to Pasco so now every 4A school has qualified to State. I am sure the WIAA is happy as not only every district is well represented but every 4A schools have advanced to State. RECORD BREAKING LONGEST GAPS SINCE LAST STATE APPEARANCE 46 - Blaine boys qualified in 1965 then patiently waited 46 years to make it back in This is the second longest gap between appearances ever. Wenatchee boys placed 2 nd in the first State XC Championships and returned the following year but missed out on the trophies. That was In 2011 the Panthers returned after a 51 year absence. 26 years - North Thurston boys qualified from , then again in 1975 and finally made it back in Sumner boys also had a 26 year gap placing 4th in 1975 and not qualifying again until Enumclaw year gap Bainbridge year gap Shelton year gap West Valley Yakima boys won in 2003 then did not qualify until years Kent Meridian girls competed at State in 1979 then did not return until That 31 year gap between appearances breaks the record of 28 years by the Meadowdale girls'( ). 12 years - Gonzaga Prep girls placed 4 th in 1999 then did not qualify again until years - Steilacoom girls LONGEST STATE STREAKS EXTENDED The Bishop Blanchet boys will make their 35th consecutive State appearance and 46th overall, both Washington State records. The Northwest Christian (Lacey) boys will compete in their 13th consecutive State meet for the second-longest active streak among boys' teams. The Bellarmine Prep girls extend their string to 16 consecutive State appearances. That ties South Kitsap (16, ) for second longest streak. Among girls' teams, only Seattle's Lakeside (21, ) has a longer streak. Capital and King s girls teams both extended their streaks to 13 years. For the eleventh consecutive year, Sehome has qualified both boys and girls. The State record for consecutive qualifications of both teams is 15 years (Gig Harbor, ). LONGEST STATE STREAKS ENDING In 2010, Lakewood boys teams ended the longest streak in State history. The Lakewood boys had qualified for State for 26 consecutive years which included eleven trophies. In 2009, the legendary Mead boys team ended their 21 year streak. Of course Mead earned an amazing 21 trophies in a row as well. Neither team has qualified to State since. In 2012 the Ellensburg boys team ended their streak of 6 years in a row to State. The Bulldogs earned one team trophy in that streak to go along with their th place and 15 total State appearances. The Ephrata girls team ended their nine year streak in The Tigers are ranked 22nd on the all-time list and have qualified to State 20 times earning six team trophies.

2 LEGENDARY PROGRAMS NOT TO QUALIFY Is it brutal district competition, parity or just bad luck? Whatever the reason, 5 of the top 8 legendary boys programs did not qualify this year. Mead showed that they are human by failing to qualify to State in However they have not qualified since running their nonappearance streak to four years. Joel Ferris ranks 2 nd years. on the all-time points scored list but failed to qualify the last two Legendary programs of the past Omak (#5), Edmonds-Woodway (#7) and Richland (#8) also missed out on the trip to Pasco. Five of the top nine girls programs did not qualify to State this year. The legendary Mount Baker girls team failed to qualify in The Lady Mountaineers have won 5 State titles and finished in the top-4 12 other times. Their 26 State appearances rank third among girls' programs however they haven t qualified since The reclassification to 1A should help them but the Mountaineers finished 7 th at their District meet while the top six qualified to State. Gig Harbor girls team won 3 titles in a row and 5 trophies in a row in the 00s. The Tide ranks 4 th on the all-time girls list but has missed out on Pasco the last two years. In fact Gig Harbor only qualified 2 runners to their District meet this year. Other legendary programs Saint George s (#7), Chelan (#8) and Omak (#9) also missed out on a trip to State in The stats below tell more of the story. Here are all 152 qualifying teams, listed in order of the number of times they have competed at the State championships. Some of the interesting facts and figures of the 53 State meets are summarized below. To rank teams, I award 10 points for a championship, 7 points for finishing second, 5 points for third, 3 points for fourth and 1 point for any other State appearance. ALL-TIME GREATEST BOYS' PROGRAMS 1) Mead High School (228 points) has, by far, the greatest boys' cross country program in Washington history. The Panthers have won a record 15 State titles, including 9 in a row from 1988 to 1996, and have finished no lower than 3rd for 21 straight years ( ). While Mead has 12 individual titles, 26 team trophies and has had 57 boys on the podium at state, the Panthers have showed their mortality and have not qualified a team since They have a long way to go before anyone will unseat them as the role model of the state. 2) Despite brutal competition from cross-town rivals, Joel Ferris (156) has won 8 titles in the State's largest classification, including 4 straight from 2003 to The Saxons have 22 total top-4 finishes as well as 6 individual titles and 50 podium placers. Ferris jumped over Blanchet, and moved into second place with their 2009 title. However after placing 4 th in 2010, the Saxons failed to qualify to State the last two years. Both Ferris and Mead can coast a bit since their legend status is secured. 3) Consistent, consistent, consistent. Parity and tough district competition have toppled the top two legendary teams but Bishop Blanchet (152) just keeps on rolling. The Braves have competed at State a record 46 times, including the last 35 years in a row. They have won 8 titles during that stretch along with 5 individual titles. They've been 4th or better 17 times and placed 35 runners on the podium. In only two years (1959 and 1961) have one of the top 3 teams on this list not been at the state meet and in 14 years all three have appeared. 4) Yet another title pushes North Central (142) up the legends list. With seven 3A championships and two runner-up finishes in the last eight years, North Central reprises early success. Between 1971 and 1987 the Indians finished 4th or better 8 times, including capturing the 3A title in A 15 year gap followed but the Indians have been on a tear ever since. 42 podium placers, 17 team trophies and two individual State Champions comprise a great team resume. NC is moving up quickly and Mead s once untouchable title streak of 9 looks within reach.

4 5) In 2011 a legendary team from the past finally made it back to the show. Omak (130) returned to State for the first time since Significant since they had only failed to qualify 3 times between 1969 and However in 2012 Omak failed to qualify. The Pioneers, with won 7 State titles, are the greatest small school boys program in Washington history. They have 16 total top-4 trophies in 29 State appearances and have won 3 individual titles along with placing 25 runners on the podium. 6) Seattle Prep (117) has won 3 team titles, each in a different decade (1966, 1972, and 2000). The Panthers have finished among the top 4 on 18 occasions to go along with 4 individual titles. They have placed 20 runners on the podium and qualified 28 teams to the show. With 11 straight trophies ( ) Prep along with North Central look to be legends in the making. 7) Counting the histories of both of its predecessor schools, Edmonds-Woodway (110) has 7 championships to its credit, including six between 1982 and A true team model, the Warriors 11 trophies have come with only one individual title and only 19 podium placers. E- W s 32 State appearances rank second to Blanchet but has not been at state since 2005 and only 4 times since ) Despite not having competed at State since 1995, Richland (103) has 24 appearances, finishing 4th or better 13 times, including 5 straight titles from 1970 to That run made the Bombers the dominant team of Washington cross country's first three decades. Richland holds the distinction as the best program not to have won an individual title but has placed 17 runners on the state podium. Not long ago, Richland was #2 on this list. Along with Omak and Edmonds-Woodway, Richland s early history has them in the fading legends category. 9) Moving up one spot, King's (95) earns their 12 th trophy. King s, then King s Garden, finished 22nd and last in the very first State meet in The Knights have avenged that ignominy with 4 team titles, 3 runner-up finishes and 25 team appearances. This includes a streak of 16 State appearances in a row ( ). King s has won 4 individual titles and had 29 runners climb the state podium. Gig Harbor, Sehome and Lakeside 9 Mile Falls are moving up fast on this list so the Knights will have to work to stay in the top 10. 9) Gig Harbor (95) qualified to State for the first time in 1980 then missed out in of the next 31 years the Tides have made the trip to State, including a 20 year streak from While the Tides have been a regular at State, they have won only 2 team titles. That is the lowest total of any team in the top 14. Gig Harbor does climb the podium often with their total of 12 team trophies, 3 individual Champions and 27 podium placers. 11) 1996 was the first year that Lakeside 9 Mile Falls (93) qualified to the State Championships. The Eagles returned in 1997 to win the title then defended in 1998 with another win. Since then they have only missed out on the trip to Pasco twice. That makes 15 out of 17 years to State. In that time, the Eagles have won a total of 6 team titles and 11 trophies including 9 in a row. The 15 appearances are by far the fewest of any of the top 10 teams and fewer than any team in the top 25. Another true team model, Lakeside has only won 1 individual title and has only placed 17 runners on the podium. 12) Burlington-Edison (92) won 5 trophies in a row from and moved into the top 10 but a three year drought has bumped them down. The Tigers have won 11 trophies in their 22 State appearances and have placed 24 runners on the podium. Burlington-Edison and Richland are the only teams in the top 17 who have not had an individual Champion. They were a fast rising team however brutal district competition has slowed their legendary status. 13) In 2002, just 11 years ago, Sehome (87) had 12 points and one trophy to their credit. Needless to say things have changed. Something clicked and the Mariners are quickly moving to legendary status. A streak of 8 trophies in a row and 4 State titles have Sehome rising up the list rapidly. Not just quality teams, the Mariners have produced 5 individual State Champions and ran 22 guys onto the podium steps. Along with North Central, Sehome has become a power house and don t look to be slowing down any time soon. 14) One of the most accomplished schools between , Saint George's (86) has won three B titles along with one individual title. The Dragons have finished in the top 4 eight other times for 11 trophies, marching 20 runners up the steps at state. However the Dragons failed to make it to State in 2011 and have only scored 4 points since The most storied B school program was once in the top 10 but is falling fast. TOP 40 BOYS TEAMS: 15) Montesano (78) 4 pts. since ) Snohomish (77) 0 pts. since ) Columbia River (77) consistent but only 1 trophy since ) Eisenhower (75) 4 straight trophies 18) University (75) 1 appearance since ) Riverside (72) 1 appearance since ) West Valley-Spokane (71) 0 appearances since ) East Valley-Yakima (71) 0 appearances since ) Curtis (71) back after 4 year drought 24) Selah (69) 7 straight appearances 25) Lakewood (63) 0 appearances since ) Charles Wright (61) 8 trophies in 11 years

The Rams have been a consistent program scoring big for the last 3 decades. Between 1981 and 2012 they only missed out on State 4 times (27 of 31 years). They have won 4 titles and finished in the top-4 an additional 15 times. Another team of depth as they have amazingly never won an individual title and have only had 18 girls on the podium. Riverside has won 13 team trophies in the last 16 years. 2) After 16 years, Mount Baker has been dethroned. The Mountaineers (121) took over the alltime lead from Edmonds Woodway in 1996, after scoring consistently since They won titles in their first two State meets and have added three more since. Mount Baker earned 17 trophies along the way and placed a record 33 runners on the podium, including 2 individual titles. Their 26 State appearances are also the 2nd highest total for a girls' team. Between 1977 and 2004 they only missed out on a trip to state three times (25 of 28 years). However the Mountaineers have not scored since Will they rebound or fall to the fate of the former champion and fade off the list. Perhaps reclassification may boost their future score. 3) Carroll High School closed in 1986 and Coach Phil English moved across town to Eisenhower (114). In 1987, the Cadets placed second at State and the legend began. As the greatest big school girls' program east of the Cascades, they have won five titles, five times been runners-up, and collected a total of 13 trophies. Since 1987, the Cadets have only missed out on State 4 times (21 of25 years). Eisenhower has won 2 individual titles and placed 29 runners on the podium. After a drought in the late 00 s, the Cadets regrouped to win again in ) The big school girls program of the west side is Gig Harbor (112). Like Mount Baker, the Tides (112) won it all in their first State meet (1980) and have five titles total. They've finished among the top-4 nine other times, and have qualified for State 23 of the last 26 years. The Tides have won 3 individual titles and have placed 23 girls on the podium. However they did not qualify the last 2 years and haven t won a trophy since 2009.

9 5) Moving up two spots is Bellarmine Prep (111). The Lions have more State appearances (33) than any other girls' team and are pushing a streak of 16 straight appearances ( ). They've won 4 team titles in those 33 trips, plus posted 11 other top-4 finishes. The Lions have won 3 individual titles and placed 30 girls on the podium. 6) Also moving up 2 spots is King s (104). With only 4 appearances before this century, King s has earned a record 7 Titles including 4 in a row from 2006 to The Lady Knights have racked up 12 trophies in 13 years and are riding a 13 year streak to State. Their 85 points in the 2000 s, score as the best female decade ever. 2 nd place is Omak of the 90 s with 61. The Lady Knights have won 3 individual titles and placed 29 runners on the podium. If not for the 2 year opt up to 2A, the Lady Knights might have topped Mead s decade record of 89 points and Mead s record 9 titles in a row. 7) Saint George's (102) first qualified to State in The Dragons won 5 titles in an eight-year stretch and have 9 other top 4 finishes. They have won 3 individual titles, have placed 29 girls on the podium and are by far the best B girl s program. In 2011 the Dragons ended their streak of 9 straight appearances and haven t trophied since ) Chelan (102) The Goats have won 4 titles, including 3 straight from 1988 to 1990, and have finished in the top-3 on 9 other occasions. They must have had amazing depth as they have only had 11 girls on the podium and have never won an individual title. 9) Omak (96) was the dominant girls program during the 1990s. The Pioneers won 4 titles between 1992 and 1998 and won 9 trophies between 1992 and Omak has one individual title, 14 team trophies and has placed 31 girls on the podium; which is tied for 2nd. As recent as 1999 the Pioneers were second on this list but have only scored 8 points since 2001 and are falling fast. 9) South Whidbey (96) The Falcons won their 1 st and only state title in They have been runners-up a record 8 times and have a total of 13 trophies. They have never won an individual title but have placed 19 girls on the podium. South Whidbey has the second longest girl s streak of 16 years to state ( ) and have made 25 appearances. The Falcons have only scored 3 points since 2004 but reclassification may brighten their future. 11) Snohomish (91) Runners-up in the first two girls' State meets, the Panthers finally captured their first title in 1995 and have won 3 more since. They've been top-4 a total of 12 times with a streak of 10 years ( ) in 23 appearances. The Panthers 2002 and 2003 teams are arguably the best teams in state history but the school split in 2008 and now has cross town rival Glacier Peak to deal with. Not coincidentally the Panthers have only scored 3 points since TOP 40 GIRLS TEAMS: 12) Sehome (88) 7 trophies in a row 13) Newport-Bellevue (86) 0 pts. since ) Lakeside-Seattle (83) 4 years streak 15) Edmonds Woodway (80) 2 pts. since ) Northwest Chr.
