2 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH John E. Lynn was a General Passenger Agent for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad office located in Kansas City. He worked for the railroad company in excess of 40 years. He was born May 11, 1882 in Iowa. His father was a native of Sweden and his mother was born in Iowa. The 1930 census shows John married to Agnes V. Lynn, with two children: John N., age 16 and Elizabeth L., age 7. At that time they were living in Minneapolis, MN. SCOPE AND CONTENT The J.E. Lynn Railroad Memorabilia Collection contains material related to railroading, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy (CB&Q) line in particular. Inclusive dates are 1896 to 1960; however, the bulk of the material is concentrated during the period of 1930 to 1954, a time when the streamlining of railroad transportation was on the rise. In addition to promotional packets, there are postcards, photographs, tickets and railroad timetables. Much emphasis is placed on the newly developed Zephyr and Dome Train. There are miscellaneous booklets and flyers, including travel brochures and labor union rules and regulations. The material is informative and nostalgic, with images that recall a time when train travel was luxurious, romantic and affordable. Little is known regarding the provenance of the J.E. Lynn Railroad Memorabilia Collection or Lynn himself. SERIES NOTES Series I: Passenger Trains Series I is located in box 1, folders 1-7. It contains promotional material related to the introduction of the various contemporary passenger trains. Most material dates into the 1950s and contains information on the California Zephyr, General Pershing, Zephyr, Kansas City Zephyr, Pioneer Zephyr, Silver Streak Zephyr and the Twin Cities Zephyr. Included are press kits, booklets, flyers and souvenir tickets. Photographs originally enclosed with the packets for the Kansas City Zephyr and the American Royal Zephyr are housed with Series VI. Series II: Ephemera / Memorabilia Series II is located in box 1, folders It contains miscellaneous railroad tickets and passes, some of which date back to 1896; railroad timetables and schedules; menus, programs and publications, and assorted ephemera. It includes railroad history, souvenir booklets and flyers, and travel brochures and booklets. Series IV: Miscellaneous Series IV is located in box 2, folders 5-8.
