3 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Introduction This report shows data on sales of wallcoverings for various major countries over the last five years to the end of 2013 using data supplied directly by individual country representatives within various IGI member companies. The report has been compiled by Whittle Industry Data on behalf of IGI and the information shown is available to IGI member companies only. The report shows sales rollage of wallcoverings for the period 2009 to 2013 for countries where we have data from regular providers of information mainly in Europe and Asia as shown in the list opposite. In addition, we have also tried to include data on other countries although in these cases the data is currently more limited - this information is shown on page 4. The statistics have two main objectives: to provide estimates of the size of national markets and an indication of sales by major product category. to assist IGI member companies in assessing movements in sales over time and to allow firms to compare their own performance with the industry as a whole. Definitions used Our aim has been to collect information from all countries on as consistent a basis as possible using a standardised reporting form. To help achieve this the reporting forms sent to country representatives were accompanied by written definitions explaining in detail the information required and how it should be provided. Layout of the report The tables show estimated market sales in rolls for all countries that have provided data. These tables show the following information: Domestic market sales + imports = total home market sales Export sales The countries for which we have data are shown below: Belarus 20 Benelux 22 China 24 Denmark 26 Finland 28 France 30 Germany 32 Great Britain 34 Italy 36 Japan 38 Korea 40 Norway 42 Russia 44 Sweden 46 Exports 48 Sources of data Data for the report is drawn from individual sources within each country with information based upon either internal company estimates of the market or alternatively being derived from government or trade association sources. -3-

4 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Where reference is made to detailed import and export statistics, this is sourced mainly from official government statistics. This data can be found in the separate IGI document called Wallcovering International Trade Statistics for 2013 which is being sent with this report. Note: Some members have also supplied more detailed export statistics and these are shown at the end of this report. Some of these statistics may vary from the official government numbers. Tables and charts Most of the data in this report is shown in terms of 000s of rolls, but there is also some value information for certain countries. In some cases data has been revised since this time last year but any s are generally small. The report is also available on the members area of the IGI website at www. igiwallcoverings.org The market is thought to be 80 professionally applied with DIY being about 20. Ukraine - sales of wallcoverings are currently thought to be about 35m to 40m rolls. Contact point If you have any queries regarding these statistics please contact Whittle Industry Data, Oak House, 10 Brook Street, Wivenhoe, Colchester, Essex CO7 9DS, England. This information is more limited and often based on consensus or opinion rather than facts which can be difficult to obtain. Iran - we understand the market in Iran is estimated by one source at approximately 30m to 40m rolls. Much of this is believed to be supplied from Turkey and Korea. Turkey - opinions on the size of the market in 2012 ranged from 8m rolls to 20m rolls but it could be as high as 25m rolls. Home production is believed to have grown significantly with exports going to the middle east and CIS. Paper remains popular at 70 of the market with paintable whites being imported from Germany. Korean havy paper-backed vinyl is also very popular. -4-

5 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Summary of results for 2013 Home market sales Most countries showed lower sales of wallcoverings in 2013 with the most notable exception of China where the market showed a sharp increase. In terms of sales by region, Western Europe, the Nordic area and Russia were all well down but Eastern Asia continued to grow. In total, wallcovering sales for the 14 countries covered by IG s latest report showed an increase of 4 in 2013 but if we exclude China then sales were down by -4. All countries in Western Europe showed lower sales with Germany (down 7) and France (down 8) both sharply lower but with the UK (down 3) being less badly hit. The Nordic countries were also well down falling -6 in total. Exports In total, export sales were slightly higher in 2013 due mainly to higher exports by China. For China exports increased by 21 in 2013 with Korea also showing a good increase. Exports from Italy also increased in the last year. Elsewhere, exports by Germany, the UK, France and Russia were all lower in July 2014 For Russia (still the biggest country despite the rise of China) total sales fell 6.5 in The only growth countries were in Eastern Asia with China up massively by 34 in the last year but with Japan (up 2) and Korea (up 3) showing only small improvements. No data is available for the USA but opinions suggests the market for residential wallcoverings was either flat or slightly higher in The commercial wallcoverings market in the US is thought to have improved significantly in the last year. -5-

In total, the market is estimated to be down more than double the rate of decline seen in the previous year. Paper based sales fell 15 but the previously more robust non-woven sector also showed a setback although this does follow a very large increase in the previous year. Non-wovens fell 7 in 2013 but are still almost twice the level of 5 years ago. In total, the market for Benelux is estimated at 8.7m rolls in Imports and exports According to official Eurostat statistics on imports and exports, Belgium and the Netherlands remain big exporters of wallcoverings with total exports of 16,888 tonnes for Belgium and 7,747 tonnes for the Netherlands being about two-and-a-half times the size of the total home market for Benelux as a whole (assuming 1 tonne is 1,000 rolls approximately). Belgium For Belgium, exports in 2013 were up 5.6 by volume and 8 higher by value. France was easily the biggest market followed some way behind by Russia, the UK, Turkey and Germany with exports to the UK and Turkey both up sharply in the last year. 24 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 China Summary Figures for China show total sales up 34 in 2013 at an estimated 170m rolls but with imported sales of finished wallcoverings falling -16 in the last year. The figures are based on the amount of paper used in 2013 with data on actual wallcovering sales rollage being uncertain. The current increase in sales takes no account of inventory s which could be significant. Other figures for China show the total supply of wallcoverings up 31 at 311m rolls for 2013 with this new figure being much higher than any previously quoted statistics. Exports of wallcoverings from China were 21 higher in 2013 at 55,000 tons equivalent with strong growth being seen in exports to most countries. Exports to Western Europe were up 38 at 3m rolls but slower sales to Russia meant sales to Eastern Europe were only 5 higher at 4m rolls. Sales to Australasia, although small, were up 49 and Africa 68 higher. For China s largest market of Asia (accounting for 50 of all exports from China) sales were up 19 with the Middle East (22 of all sales) being 23 higher. Big increases were reported for sales to the Gulf States. Exports to the Americas were 6 higher largely due to a big increase in sales to Brazil but the US and our category of other South America were both lower. More information on exports is shown on page 48 of this report and in the official import and export statistics for China. -24-

26 IGI Wallcoverings Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Denmark Summary Sales in Denmark showed a small (2.3) fall in 2013 but in general the market has held up better than other countries in the last two years largely due to a resilient paintable sector. The market is overwhelmingly supplied by imported sales with some of the industry having relocated to lower cost countries in Europe in recent years. At 4.6m rolls, the total market is just below the 2012 peak of 4.7m rolls. Non-woven sales account for just under 60 of all sales and were down 3 in 2013 but paper based sales fell 28. Exports were small at 1.4m rolls but still increased 20 in the last year. According to the data provided to us by our IGI contact in Denmark, in the main these were to Western Europe and especially Sweden but also to the Netherlands, Poland, France and Germany. Exports to China increased sharply in 2013 with China now being Denmark s 6th largest market. See page 48 for more details. -26-

30 France Summary Data on France is complicated by some major structural s to the industry in 2013 but the general consensus is that sales are down by about 8 on a year ago. On the basis of previous data this would suggest a market of about 28.6m rolls in 2013 although some members feel 25m is more realistic. Sales value is estimated to be about 6 lower in 2013 although there is some uncertainty about the exact figure. We know from previous years that about 55 of all sales are non-woven and 45 paper based. Border sales fell sharply in 2013 with the estimate provided to us being down 33 on the previous year. Exports are estimated at about 5.3m rolls for 2013 being down about 26 on the previous year which is a rate of decrease broadly in line with the 18 fall shown by the official export statistics. Imports and exports The official figures show export sales to France s major market of the UK (accounting for 40 of all exports) being up 8 in 2013 but elsewhere sales were generally lower and particularly to France s smaller overseas markets. Exports fell sharply to Belgium, Russia, Spain and the Netherlands but there were good increases to Sweden, Turkey, the USA and Poland. The official data shows exports of 9,036 tonnes in 2013 being up from 7,538 tons five years ago. In terms of imports to France, Germany was easily the biggest supplier (accounting for 54 of all sales weight) and showing an increase of 3.5 in 2013 according to the Eurostat figures for France but in general imports from other countries were lower. Imports from Belgium fell 2 with sales from Italy down 14, the Netherlands down 28 and the UK 2 lower. -30-

32 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Germany Summary Sales for Germany are complicated by membership s in the German Association (VDT) but on a like-for-like basis the total market (excluding woodchips) is down 7.4 in This compares with a fall of 3.5 a year ago and small increases in the previous 3 years. The total market (excluding woodchips) was 28m rolls with non-wovens being 20.2m rolls and paper based sales 7.8m rolls. Both were lower in 2013 with non-wovens down 6 and paper based sales falling 11. By product, expanded vinyl sales fell sharply by 11 while flat printed sales were 7.4 lower. There was better news for vinyl coated and embossed sales which continued to improve being up 4.8 in the last year while paintable sales also showed an increase of 5. Export sales were just slightly lower in 2013 being down 1.7 at 61m rolls and being more than double the German domestic market of 28m rolls. Exports of expanded vinyls were down 8.8 with paintables 5 lower but vinyl coated (+5) and flat printed (+10) both improved. In terms of the export data provided by VDT, exports to Western Europe showed a good increase (+8.8) but lower sales to Russia and Ukraine meant Eastern Europe was -8.4 lower. See page 48 for details. Imports and exports In terms of the official export statistics, Germany s exports were down -4 in 2013 compared with a fall of -1.7 reported by VDT. For imports, figures from Eurostat show these down -16 at 5,200 tonnes and 28m in

34 IGI Wallcovering Sales Statistics for Operations in 2013 Great Britain Summary Again this year the statistics for Great Britain are complicated by the uncertain quality of data on the official import statistics for the country and therefore we have focused our report on data collected directly from wallcovering manufacturers in Great Britain who take part in the British Coatings Federation s Wallcovering Sector Council statistics. These statistics show total rollage down 2.6 in 2013 with the value of sales also slightly lower. By comparison, if we include total imports from official sources then the market is down 1 in volume terms. Paper based sales fell 3.6 in 2013 but non-wovens were 2.6 higher. By product, flat printed sales increased 3.4 in the last year but elsewhere sales were lower. Border sales fell 14 in 2013 continuing the downward trend of recent years but with exports of borders seeing an increase of 19. Exports of wallcoverings had a difficult year falling 9 in 2013 in rollage terms offsetting all of the growth seen in 2012 but the value of exports was just 2 lower. Imports and exports Official figures show imports to Great Britain amounting to 17,547 tonnes in 2013 although some knowledgeable sources have expressed doubt about these figures and we are working to try and resolve these concerns. The official figures show a large increase in 2011 but no significant in Imports from Germany were lower in 2013 (-22 in weight terms) but this was largely offset by higher sales from France (+30) and Italy (+11). Higher imports were also seen from China, Poland, Korea and Spain. In terms of exports, Great Britain s biggest markets were the Netherlands, France, the USA and Russia. Other significant destinations were China, Germany, Ireland and Sweden all of which showed significant increases. Sales to the UAE were slightly lower in 2013 but still up six-fold on 5 years ago. -34-
