(Excluding Rental Housing) III] Fire Safety Policies The following information is displayed on the INLOCC web site under the Fire! heading of Fire Statistics and is aimed specifically at dormitory housing. In order to minimize the potential for fires at university student housing facilities, the following items are prohibited: o Portable space heaters [Space Heaters Policy] o Barbeque grills, hibachis, smokers and related accessories including lighter fluids and similar type products. o Any open flame device or object including candles, incense sticks and related accessories. [Candles Open Flame Devices] o Hot plates, slow cookers, deep fryers, electric skillets, electric woks, griddles, sandwich makers/grills, toaster ovens and related accessories. o Flammable or combustible liquids. o Fireworks, firecrackers, rockets, flares, sparklers. [Fireworks & Pyrotechnics] o Halogen lamps. o Combustible ceiling/wall tapestries. o Live Christmas trees or nonfire retardant artificial Christmas trees. [Christmas Tree Policy] Inspections are made of student housing to ensure fire safe practices are followed. Students who live in apartments owned by Indiana University are provided with a handbook that outlines the fire safety requirements for those units. These handbooks are reviewed and updated annually. Some fire safety requirements include, but are not limited to:
7 o Avoid the use of extension cords o No open flames such as candles o No storage of flammable materials o No smoking allowed anywhere in the apartment building o Never prop open fire rated doors IV] Procedures for Student Evacuation Indiana University policy includes posting of EMERGENCY EVACUATION signage in prominent locations in all academic and Residential Program and Services buildings. On these signs are instructions for evacuation procedures from a student s individual room. Call 911, get dressed, take room key, feel door, check for smoke, alert others while exiting, be accounted for in your predetermined safe location, are all included in evacuation signage, along with a You Are Here drawing of the building. V] Fire Safety Training for Students, Faculty and Staff Training on evacuation procedures is provided at student orientation and reinforced throughout the year by Resident Assistants. The Office of Insurance, Loss Control and Claims also provides training in large group situations covering the operation of portable fire extinguishers, alarms systems and sprinkler systems and emergency evacuations. VI] To Whom Should A Fire Be Reported? In the event of an emergency, housing occupants should call local responders via 911, and activate the evacuation alarm, then exit the building. After the emergency has been abated, persons that must be notified of the event are: University Housing Manager (there is a different manager for each unit); Office of Insurance, Loss Control and Claims (mellane@iu.edu, ). Complete Office of Insurance, Loss Control and Claims contact information is listed on the INLOCC web site. VII] Future Improvements in Fire Safety The addition of NFPA 13 compliant fire suppression systems throughout housing units as they are refurbished. Replacement of nonvoice fire alarm systems as buildings are refurbished. Read Hall is being fitted with a suppression system, a four year project.
