The Davis Education & Visitors Center includes a cafe, gift shop, art gallery, horticultural library and observation tower. Fellows Riverside Gardens is one of Ohio s finest public gardens and attracts over 400,000 visitors each year. Lanterman s Mill & Covered Bridge 980 Canfield Rd. Youngstown, OH May-Oct: Tue thru Fri 10-5, Sat-Sun 12-6 Apr & Nov: Sat-Sun 12-4 One of Mahoning County s most historic and most photographed landmarks. This 46 gristmill operates today as it did in the past grinding corn and wheat. Enjoy the scenic overlook of Lanterman s Falls, the Covered Bridge and hiking trails. MetroParks Farm/ MetroParks Bikeway 54 Columbiana-Canfield Rd Farm: Apr-Oct: Mon-Fri 9-4, Sat 10-1, Sun 1-4 Bikeway: dawn to dusk This 402-acre working farm promotes agriculture through educational programming, tours, display areas, and a children s playroom. The scenic Bikeway, open dawn to dusk, is an 11-mile paved trail. Open to hikers, skaters and bicyclists, it is part of the Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway. Lanterman s Mill & Covered Bridge Arms Family Museum 648 Wick Ave. Youngstown, OH Tue-Sun 1-5 Greystone, the magnificent 1905 Arts & Crafts-style residence of Olive and Wilford Arms, is preserved a century later as the Arms Family Museum of Local History. The first floor features original period rooms that highlight the Arms love of handicraft, medieval architecture and the natural environment. Other levels feature exhibits that explore life in the Mahoning Valley. Arms Family Museum Attractions Noah s Lost Ark Exotic Animal Sanctuary 8424 Bedell Rd. See lions, tigers, cougars, leopards and other animals at this licensed sanctuary. Noah s Lost Ark National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon 259 N. Lipkey Rd. North Jackson, OH Mon thru Sat 9-5, Sun 11-5 A replica of the shrine in Harissa, Lebanon, the grounds include a 55-ft. tower topped by a 16-ft. statue of the Virgin Mary carved in rose granite. Raccoon Rd. Dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, The paths throughout the park lead visitors to remnants of the World Trade Center beams, building stones taken from the Pentagon, and an urn containing dirt from the crash site of Flight 93. Site also includes memorials to firstresponders. COMING mid-2014 An all-new gaming facility, with 1,000 video-lottery terminals (VLTs) - PLUS - a one-mile thoroughbred horse racing track for live racing action, as well as a simulcast parlor for wagering. 7 Stambaugh Auditorium 1000 Fifth Ave. Youngstown, OH Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this beautiful public auditorium opened in The magnificent concert hall seats 2,553 and is renowned for its near perfect acoustics, which have been compared to Carnegie Hall. There is also a ballroom, recital hall, and formal garden. The venue welcomes national and international performers and entertainment events on a regular basis. Home to Opera Western Reserve and the Monday Musical Club. Youngstown State University 1 University Plaza Youngstown, OH (general info) Youngstown State University, an urban research university, emphasizes a creative, integrated approach to education, scholarship, and service. YSU encompasses 140 acres just north of downtown Youngstown, and offers associate, bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. The university competes in Division I NCAA athletics. Points of Interest St. James Meeting House 35 Boardman-Poland Rd Group Tours by appointment Constructed in 28 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, St. James is the first home of the oldest Episcopal parish west of the Allegheny Mountains. Located in Boardman Park. Stambaugh Auditorium Covelli Centre 229 E. Front St. Youngstown, OH Downtown Youngstown s premiere sporting and entertainment venue. The arena hosts first-rate events, concerts, family shows and sporting events. Home to the Youngstown Phantoms USHL hockey team. YSU - Jones Hall Mahoning County Courthouse 120 Market St. Youngstown, OH Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30 Completed in 1910, this majestic building has been described as the finest courthouse between Chicago and New York. The expansive marble rotunda rises 100 feet to a glazed art glass dome. Beautiful murals adorn the courtrooms, rotunda and stairwells. St. James Meeting House Canfield Fairgrounds 265 Columbiana-Canfield Rd Home of the famous Canfield Fair, the largest county fair in the state of Ohio. 8 Parks & Recreation Enjoy the outdoors! Mahoning County is home to Mill Creek MetroParks. With over 4400 acres of natural beauty to explore, Mill Creek allows you to explore secrets of nature and engage in healthy activities. For the boating enthusiast, Lake Milton State Park and Berlin Lake are great places to spend the day on the water. Lake Newport - Mill Creek MetroParks Mill Creek MetroParks Mill Creek winds throughout Mahoning County with miles of hike-bike trails, lakes for fishing, kayaking or paddle boating, championship golf courses, Fellows Riverside Gardens, Lanterman s Mill, Nature Preserves and Wetlands, and much more recreational fun for the entire family. The Wick Recreation Area includes a Par 3 golf course, tennis courts, batting cages, volleyball courts, children s play area, picnic facilities, softball and baseball diamonds, and soccer and football fields. In the winter, the sled hill offers lighted sled riding slopes with a warming house and snack bar in addition to cross country skiing. Lake Newport, the largest of Mill Creek Park s three lakes, offers 60 acres of open water and 40 acres of wetlands. Lake Glacier is a 40 acre lake with fishing and boating permitted in season. Kayaks and paddle boats can be rented at both lakes. The Newport Wetlands, located at the southern end of the lake, provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals. Visitors can experience this complex web of flora and fauna by walking the Albert E. Davies Wetland Trail, a boardwalk through the wetlands with interpretive signs along the way. Kayakers can explore the wetland habitat through water trails inaccessible from land. Check their website for complete information on park facilities and special events. 9 Boardman Park 35 Boardman Poland Rd acre green oasis in the heart of Boardman Township, with tennis and volleyball courts, ball fields, Kids Town and Tots Town playgrounds, open-air pavilions, hike-bike trails, an amphitheater for summer concerts, and Paws Town dog park. Yellow Creek Park 19 1/2 Lowellville Rd. Struthers, OH acre park with hiking trails, picnic facilities, tennis, horseshoe, and basketball courts, and a playground. The historic site of the Hopewell Furnace is accessible by trail when Yellow Creek levels are low. Shore fishing is permitted from March 1 November 30. Parks & Recreation Bike Trails Mill Creek MetroParks Bikeway 54 Columbiana-Canfield Rd The MetroParks Bikeway is an 11-mile paved trail and offers a variety of scenery. The Kirk Road Trailhead, located near the midpoint of the Bikeway, provides parking lot, restrooms, water fountains and picnic pavilion. The Bikeway stretches from the northern Mahoning County line south to Western Reserve Road. Eventually the Bikeway will be part of the 100-mile Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway, a developing corridor that will allow trail users to travel from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. Boardman Park Yellow Creek Park Austintown Park 6000 Kirk Rd acre park with hiking trail, pavilions, volleyball, tennis and basketball courts, ball fields, and children s playground with splash pad to cool off during the summer months. Austintown Park Poland Forest College St Trails through 265 acres of natural beauty. Visit the Blue Bell Trail during blooming season for a special treat. Lake Milton State Park Mahoning Ave. Lake Milton, OH parks.ohiodnr.gov (select Lake Milton) Boating, fishing and swimming are popular at this state park with 600-ft. beach. Lake Milton State Park Berlin Lake 400 Bedell Rd. Berlin Center, OH Over 3,000 acre lake is ideal for all boating activities and fishing. One of Ohio s largest inland lakes. Mill Creek MetroParks Bikeway Stavich Bicycle Trail Broad St. (Route 289) Struthers, OH 4441 Call for info The only bicycle trail in the U.S. that takes you through two different states. This 12-mile trail originates in Struthers on the western end, and continues east to New Castle, PA. It runs parallel to the scenic Mahoning River and the former Youngstown- New Castle streetcar line. 9
