4 - NOE - he text o "Come, Come, Ye aints" is doutless one o the most well known and eloved in Latter-Day aints culture s such, it is imued with distinctly LD associations oth cultural and historical I decided, however, to aroach the text not as a "Mormon" icon, ut rather as a text with a more universal message; one o hoe, aith, and even otimism during times o ierce struggle and triulation that transcends time, lace, culture, and even creed he irst decision I made was to set the text in Latin; the lingua ranca or centuries hus the choir singing in Latin symolizes the universality o the message; their voices are our voices I wanted to acknowledge that the text is rom a hymn, ut without resorting to the traditional reeated hymn orm, where the music reeats or each verse here is actually one musical setting which reeats three times; however, it isn't until the inal verse that it is resented in ull our-voice texture In the irst and second verses various lines are extracted as solos, duets, and trios s a inal ecumenical gesture I set the third verse as chant hough erhas quite "non-mormon" in character, the chant tune is actually comrised o the notes rom the oening hrase o the hymn melody In some ways my resulting iece is distinctly catholic Not catholic as in Roman Catholic (although the chant section certainly is a nod to that Catholic musical tradition, which or more than a thousand years was how the maority o Christians conducted their worshi), ut catholic in the dictionary deinition: "O road or lieral scoe; comrehensive: Including or concerning all humankind; universal" I want to thank Glenn Gordon or organizing the Relections roect, and the Melourne Chamer Choir or ringing the music to lie LM
