1 This section presents statistics related to transportation in the Genesee- Finger Lakes Region, including data on transportation options available to the Region s residents, number of vehicles, commuting patterns, accidents, freight, and boating. The Genesee-Finger Lakes Region has a rich transportation history dating back to the Iroquois trails and the Erie and -Cayuga Canals. Today, a network of state and federal highways and local roads, commercial air service, passenger rail service, and ferry service are available to the Region s residents and industries. In addition, manufacturers and suppliers have access to rail and air freight services. These transportation options facilitate travel within the Region and to destinations within other parts of New York State, the nation, and the world. 13 Transportation Definitions The information provided in this section was obtained from the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority and the Ontario County Transportation Office. REGIONAL TRANSIT ANNUAL PASSENGER TRIPS (UNLINKED): the number of passengers who boarded a public transportation vehicle (in a given year). Passengers are counted each time they board a vehicle (the initial boarding and each transfer to another vehicle count as separate trips) PEAK FLEET SIZE: the number of public transportation vehicles actually operated in periods of maximum service ANNUAL PASSENGER MILES: the cumulative sum of the distances ridden by each passenger (in a given year) BOATING VESSEL REGISTRATIONS The information provided in this section was obtained from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
