2 PAGE 2 Martha s Musings In the quiet of this place in the dark of the night I wait and watch. In the stillness of my soul and from its fathomless depths the senses of my heart are awake to You. For fresh soundings of life for new showings of light I search in the silence of my spirit, O Blessing God. J. Philip Newell As I write, things seem as far from quiet as they can be! Very little around me is still. At Sunrise we re putting the finishing touches on the Christmas Eve service. In our homes we re baking those cookies our kids liked when they were little. We re wrapping gifts. We re putting leaves in the dining room table so we can fit the cousins at the table. We re thinking about our loved ones. We are getting ready to celebrate Christmas in whatever ways our families and loved ones do this year. We re busy we might be stressed but we are in the mood to celebrate the great joy that Christ s birth brings our lives. At the same time we are getting ready to greet the New Year. At Sunrise we are planning to ordain and install our new deacons and elders on January 13. It won t be long before committees begin make plans and envision ways to live our Christmas joy at Sunrise. BUT in the meantime between the rush leading up to Christmas Eve and the scurry of new things at New Year s in the time let s find some quiet, and as Phillip Newell suggests let s listen to the stillness of our souls for fresh sounds of new life. Let s be quiet in the dark days of winter and listen for life and light. Let s take time to reflect on our lives and how we can better live the peace and good news which Christ s birth brings. It is a marvelous thing indeed to celebrate. It is also a wonderful thing to be still and meditate. We need both joy and stillness in our spiritual lives. Let s take time to reflect and be still. 3 PAGE 3 Socks, Mittens and Hats Watch for the mitten tree, coming in December. The socks, mittens and hats will be delivered to the children at Ashby House, DVACK and Martin Luther King Child Care this season. Place socks, mittens and hats on the tree in the hall Sunrise Mariners The January Mariners meeting will be held on January 13th at the church. We will have a 12:00 PM "Pot Luck" luncheon. Each person is asked to bring a sandwich for themselves and a Salad or Desert to share. Drinks will be furnished. Please RSVP either Cheryl Sweley ( ) or Merilyn Griffith ( ). Chili Supper News It s about time again. Chili Supper time is Saturday, February 23. Tickets will soon be out! Circle your calendars for the Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August Adult Faith Class in the Parlor Beginning Sunday, January 6, we will start the series ASK: Faith Questions in a Skeptical Age. This is a DVD series with Scott Jones and his son Arthur, both Methodist pastors who will ask difficult questions and bring a Christian perspective as we seek answers. Grab your coffee and come join us in the church Parlor!

Feed My Starving Children will be January 20 th and 21 st at Trinity Methodist Church. Judy Christensen is the contact if you want to help! For Martin Luther King Day there will be a potluck supper Saturday evening January 19 th. A worship service will be Sunday afternoon January 20 th at 3:30, both here at Sunrise. Souper Bowl of Hope will soon be here! The Prayer Shawl Ministry continues. We have met with first Presbyterian and will meet some more to find out more projects to work on together. We shared with them that we want to have a Central American Mission Trip soon. They are planning on a Guatemala Mission in a few months. We could get you information if you are interested. Again have a happy 2019! Sunrise Mission Committee Elders; Jean Drees and Paul McAfee Members; Steve Sebree, Carol Viar, Judy Christensen, Dave Parks, Dean Atteberry, Reverend Martha Murchison Martin Luther King Worship Service Sunrise will host the community Martin Luther King worship service on Sunday, January 20 at 3:30 p.m. We'll also host a community pot-luck dinner in the MPR on Saturday, January 19 at 6:00 p.m. Both opportunities offer us the opportunity to show hospitality to our neighbors. Please mark your calendars now so that we can support these opportunities Prayer Notes Philippians 4:6 CSB says Don t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. With this scripture in mind, we pray Dear God, As we face uncertain times in our nation, we ask you to be among us. We are comforted by the knowledge that You know and care about each of us. We trust our nation to Your loving care. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation s leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to do it. Give us Your spirit to guide us so that we may seek Your will in our lives and impact the world around us. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen

ANNUAL REPORTS 2018 Annual reports are due to the office by Monday, January 7, OFFICE CLOSED The office will be closed January 21 for Martin Luther King Day COFFEE HOUR FOR JANUARY The Parish Nurses has Coffee Hour for the month of January. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Blood Pressures will be taken on the second Sunday, January 13 DELI HOUR FOR JANUARY The Choir has Deli Hour for the month of January. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Blood Pressure Check In January the Blood Pressure Check will taken on the second Sunday. In February, The Parish Nurses will go back to taking blood pressure on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Thank you.

8 PAGE 8 Presbytery Mission Team The 14 members of the Presbytery mission team traveled to the area between Houston and Galveston October 27 through November 4. The team worked in Jay's house, rebuilding from the flooding due to Hurricane Harvey in the fall of The photos show some of the work that was accomplished: tiling, grouting, trim work, painting, facia replacement, cleaning, sanitizing hanging doors, replacing electrical outlets, cabinet installation. 14 good workers can accomplish a lot in a week! Special photo of the oldest member of our team (Don is 96) and the youngest member (Kylee is 24). Sunrise members participating in the trip: Jean Adam, Judy Granfield, Kylee Ayres, Carol Viar. Please check out the next opportunity to travel with this work team when the opportunity arises next fall! Amazing Volunteer Opportunity! Serving as a CASA (Court appointed Special Advocate ) for a child who has been removed from his/her home for abuse or neglect is a rewarding experience. If you are concerned about the status of the foster care system in Kansas, this is something YOU can do! Contact CAPS at In 2018, CASA volunteers in this immediate area have stood beside 75 children as the faced this critical time in their lives, giving a total of over 12,000 hours of their time to make the lives of these children more bearable. There are more children who do not have this kind of support. This is something YOU can do! CAPS

Mission Committee members have already signed up, but we would like to fill other positions also.
