7 RUZIZI TENTED LODGE In the riverine forest on the edge of Lake Ihema is a small, private, lodge offering nine spacious, en-suite tents, dotted along the forested lakes edge. 11 ABOUT RWANDA Facts Rwanda, popularly known as a land of a thousand hills is a stable East African country, easily accessible from Kenya and Uganda. It is relatively easy, safe and simple to travel around. It is landlocked, surrounded by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. It has five volcanoes, twenty-three lakes and numerous rivers, some forming the source of the River Nile. The country lies 75miles south of the Equator, 880miles west of the Indian Ocean and 1250miles east of the Atlantic Ocean - literally in the heart of Africa. Government Rwanda is a Presidential unitary Republic that is based upon a multiparty system governed under the constitution that was adopted in 2003 replacing the transitional constitution that was put in place in The President of Rwanda is the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Among his other responsibilities are powers to create policy, administer government agencies, exercise the prerogative of mercy, negotiate and ratify treaties, etc. The President is elected by popular vote every seven years, and appoints the Prime Minister and members of Cabinet. The Rwandan Parliament is posed of two chambers, namely the Senate and the lower chamber-the Chamber of Deputies serving 5 year terms. The members of the Senate are selected by a variety of bodies and they serve eight-year terms. Rwanda has low corruption levels and the constitution provides for an Ombudsman whose duties include prevention and fighting of corruption. There is an existing policy of zero tolerance for corruption and any corrupt tendencies are handled seriously. The current constitution divides Rwanda into provinces, districts, cities, municipalities, towns, sectors and cells with each subdivision and its borders established by Parliament. The five provinces act as intermediaries between the national government and their constituent districts to ensure that national policies are implemented at the district level. Geography and Climate Mountains dominate central and western Rwanda. These mountains are part of the East African Rift Valley. The highest peak, which is also Rwanda s highest point, is Mount Karisimbi. The temperature averages C (generally 30 C in the daytime and minimum 15 C at night, though it is often much colder in the mountains where snow and frost occur). Visit Nyungwe Forest if you would like to experience winter in tropical Africa. The rainfall averages 900-1,600mm p.a. Rainy seasons are normally from February to April and November to January, although there have been some weather pattern changes recently. The vegetation ranges from dense equatorial forest in the Southwest to tropical savannah in the east. Economically Rwanda largely produces tea, coffee, sugar, fish and flowers. It also has natural resources such as tin, gold, natural gas and Tanzanite. Being in the Albertine region, it is likely that there are other natural resources waiting to be discovered that may be in the interest of investors. Currency The national currency is Rwandan Franc (RWF). As at the end of June 2015, 1 US Dollar (USD) was equivalent to 720 RWF. The smallest-value note is a 500 RWF note, which is the smallest note in physical size, as well. There are also notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 RWF, with the larger notes being slightly larger in physical size. There are no notes over 5,000 RWF. Many places in Rwanda now accept credit cards, however it is advisable to carry some cash with you just in case, especially if you are travelling outside of Kigali longer than a few days. The smallest value coin is 1 RWF. However the monly used smallest value coin is 100 RWF. It is mon for most businesses in Rwanda, including currency exchangers and gas stations, to round transactions to the nearest 100 RWF. There are ATMs all over Kigali, for every bank branch. Depending on your bank, this can be a much cheaper way to get francs because the ATMs use a much better exchange rate than currency exchanges.

16 National Parks AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK. Set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park could scarcely be more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterise much of Rwanda. Rolling hills of acacia bush with panoramic views across scattered grassland, patches of thick forest and a mosaic of swamp-fringed lakes along the meandering Akagera watercourse contribute to this park s almost unrivalled scenic beauty. Akagera is unique in Rwanda as the only savannah environment in the country. Large herds of buffalo and impala, zebra and topi are monly seen on the open plains, whilst smaller antelope such as oribi, klipspringer, bushbuck and reedbuck exist widely throughout the park. Elephants tend to stay around the lakes which are inhabited by large populations of hippo and crocodiles. Baboons and vervet monkeys 10 are monplace, less so is the secretive blue monkey. Leopard; hyena and jackal are also residents and may be seen on a night drive along with genet, serval, bushbabies, porcupine and other nocturnal wildlife. An important population of sitatunga lives in the papyrus swamps along with other rarities such as the shoebill and other papyrus endemic bird species. Camping alongside the picturesque lakes of Akagera is a truly mystical introduction to the wonders of the African bush. Pods of 50 hippopotami grunt and splutter throughout the day, while outsized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws menacingly agape. Magically, the air is torn apart by the unforgettable duetting of a pair of fish eagles, asserting their status as the avian monarchs of Africa s waterways. Lining the lakes are some of the continent s densest concentrations of waterbirds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek and the bizarre shoebill stork - the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought after of all African birds. 17 NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK Nyungwe National Park is a very rare and important habitat for many species, especially primates and birds. And at over 1000 square kilometers, Nyungwe is Africa s largest protected mountain rainforest. With about 310 bird species, 26 of which are endemic, Nyungwe is one of the most important and still undiscovered bird watching destinations in Africa. Reaching to almost 3000 meters above sea level with Mount Bigugu the highest point in the Park, Nyungwe s forests extend to altitudes occupied by few other forests in Africa. Nyungwe is also home to one of Africa s greatest concentrations of chimpanzees and a sometimes noisy, acrobatic bination of other primates such as Rwenzori colobus and L Hoest s monkeys. A variety of hiking and walking trails criss-cross the Park leading to a canopy walk, primate tracking adventures, the southernmost source of the Nile and ecotourism attractions. The park includes a colorful array of orchids, butterflies, moths and other insects. The beauty cannot be fully expressed on paper; you just have to plan a trip across the majestic hills of southeast Rwanda. VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, are great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest - the Virungas. Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Parc des Volcans protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range - home of the rare mountain gorilla - and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. An exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virungas offers stirring views in all directions. Then, abruptly, the trail enters the national park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and littered with fresh spoor of the mountains elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed, easily accessible and among the highest in Africa, beckoning an ascent. GOLDEN MONKEYS In the Volcano National Park there are now fully habituated Golden Monkeys and they have been accessible to tourists since June MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREKKING A silverback (mature male) weighs nearly three times as much as the average man (up to 200kg). The Mountain Gorilla is a distinct species from its cousin the western lowland gorilla and was unknown to western science until Gorillas share 97% of their genes with mankind. They are highly sociable, moving in troops of between 5-50 animals typically prising a silverback, three or four wives and several young. Females reach sexual maturity in their eighth year, males when they are around 13. Gorillas have few natural enemies and can live for up to 50 years in the wild. A female gorilla has a similar gestation period to humans, and may raise up to six offspring if she lives to old age. Gorillas spend most of their waking hours on the ground, but sleep in trees, each building itself a temporary nest. GORILLA WATCHING ETIQUETTE Gorillas are very susceptible to human illnesses, so always wash your hands before you visit them. If you feel unwell or carry a contagious disease, stay behind. Turn your head away if you need to sneeze; never spit in the forest. Stay in a tight group when near the gorillas, speaking only in whispers. Don t eat or drink near them, nor leave any rubbish. For your safety and their health keep seven metres away from the gorillas, but stay still if they approach you. Never touch a gorilla. Although non-aggressive, they are wild animals and can sometimes charge. If this happens, crouch down, don t look them in the eye and wait for them to pass. Flash photography is forbidden. Point-andshoot cameras are inadvisable as picture quality will be poor in these conditions and the flash can go off inadvertently. 26 GISHWATI - MUK NATIONAL PAR Main Article It has been two years since the Rwandan government passed a law to create a new national park bining the Mukura and Gishwati forests, establishing the Gishwati- Mukura National Park - a forested area which spreads from up in the north of the country near the Volcanoes National Park, all the way down, joining the Gishwati and Mukura forests, to Nyungwe Forest. This is a great success story for the conservationists who have been fighting for a long time to protect this strip on the Congo-Nile divide. In the far north of Rwanda, Gishwati Forest once had a flourishing eco-system, extending all the way up to the Volcaones National park. Following the tragic events of the 1994 genocide, large numbers of the population flowed back into the country from across the border and spread out over the land, many heading towards these forested area to set up new farms and homes for their families. Part of the forest was cut down, natural resources extracted, and exotic species introduced - all shrinking the forested areas, pushing them beyond their means and threatening their survival. In 2007 an American research facility stepped in with the aim of saving a small population of less than 20 chimpanzees who had somehow managed to survive in a diminishing forest. They had tremendous success and quickly the protected area increased, the forest began to flourish once 20

27 ULA K more, and the local munities began to live in harmony with their environment. Further south, Mukura Forest has had a reserve" status for the past 60 years or so however during those years its size has reduced by almost 50% - partly due to the population pressures which affected the Gishwati Forest, but also due to illegal mining which has been taking place. The newly created Gishwati-Mukura National Park gives both these areas official protected status, and a wildlife corridor has been established, linking Gishwati Forest to Mukura Forest and down to Nyungwe Forest. This protected area offers incredible biodiversity Presently, it is known for a wide range of fauna, including four species of primates: the eastern chimpanzee, the golden monkey, the blue monkey, and the l hoest s monkey (also known as mountain monkey); more than a dozen species of East African chimpanzees; mammals such as red river hog, the black-fronted duiker, the southern tree hyrax, among others This has been extremely exciting news for Rwanda, and shows a great willingness of the government to help stabalise and protect these hugely important areas and turning the forest into a national park move has increased the number of parks in the country to four. The others are the game-rich Akagera, situated in savannah lowlands in the country s east; Volcanoes, home to the famous mountain gorillas in the north; and Nyungwe rainforest in southwest, one of the world s richest ecosystems that is home to several species of primates and birds. 34 Travel Article Kingfisher Diaries 2: Spectacular Lake Kivu Lake Kivu lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. It is one of Great Lakes in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. There are about 200 small rivers that flow into it from a relatively small catchment whilst the outflow is to the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika and ultimately into the mighty Congo. Lying at 1463 m above sea level, its surface area is 2,370 km2, the average depth is 240m whilst the maximum depth is 485m and its total volume is an impressive 560 km3. Lake Kivu has a very irregular shape with a large island, Île Idjwi, the tenth largest in the world, in the southern DRC part of the lake. The maximum distance from one end of the lake to the other is 103km whilst it's about 48km across. Lake Kivu is unique with many features setting it apart from all others in the world. For example, it used to flow to the north and drain into the Nile. However, around 12,000 years ago, lavas flows from the Virunga volcanoes dammed this outflow, reversing the direction of its waters and also causing the depth to increase. Then around 5,000 years ago when local volcanism and hydrothermal activities began to affect the lake and it became very stratified with different layers that hardly interact with each other. This stable stratification is the secret to the lake s huge resource; more than any other lake in the world, it has vast quantities of trapped methane at depths of over 200m. So there are projects near to Gisenyi and Kibuye that are beginning to extract this reserve. The surface water temperature is 24 C. At depth, almost every other (non-frozen) lake in the world is cooler than at the surface with the usual bottom temperature being about 4 C. However, in Lake Kivu, geothermal activity keeps the temperature in the lower layers at 26 C - higher than at the surface. With very steep sides, river run offs (and most 28

The surface layer therefore prises very clean, fresh water, in which some 31 species of fish live, many of which are caught by local fishing cooperatives using their unique fishing boats. However, there are no large animals such as hippopotamus or crocodiles. If an industrial extraction process does not remove it, the dissolved methane and carbon dioxide in the deep layers, will eventually and very catastrophically erupt.
