As for air travel, Bristol International Airport is only about 65 minutes away by car, or you can take a direct train from Trowbridge to Bristol Temple Meads and a bus shuttle to the airport. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be reached in about hours by car, or you can take a direct coach link to Heathrow, with onward coach connections available to Gatwick, Luton and Stansted airports. Trowbridge is close to the A350, a main route from the south coast to the Midlands. This provides access to the trunk network of the M4 (junction 17) and A303. The main health providers are the Royal United Hospital in Bath, and for local maternity services, Trowbridge Community Hospital. Growing graciously The foundations for the town were laid in the Saxon period, and the discovery of Saxon loomweights suggests that woollen cloth was made here from that time and generated its first wealth. The industry expanded in Tudor times and two of the first-known clothiers bequeathed money in the 15 th century to improve the town s roads, rebuild the church and build almshouses. In the 18 th century, elegant Georgian buildings were erected for rich clothiers - the Lloyds Bank building in Fore Street is an example. Early mechanisation brought other industry to Trowbridge and the last cloth mill closed in It now houses the town museum.
3 Trowbridge, a pleasant, family-friendly place to live, with a wealth of history Trowbridge is currently designated for further growth and is set to become a major sub-regional centre with vigorous social and economic development. Trowbridge is a pleasant, familyfriendly place to live, with a wealth of historic buildings preserved for posterity, open green spaces and individual as well as nationally known retailers. Key attractions in the town centre include Castle Place and The Shires shopping centres, the People s Park with its tennis courts and children s playground, the Arc Theatre for its original and innovative performances, an indoor market and regular farmers markets, plus leading supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury s. There is also an independent, traditional department store, Knees of Trowbridge, and an attractive parade of small shops can be found in Church Walk. For refreshments and evenings out there is a wide choice of eateries including several ethnic restaurants. The exciting new St Stephen s Place Leisure Park has attracted some of the best-known names in family dining. Located in the town centre a few minutes walk from the railway station, this vibrant meeting place boasts a 7-screen Odeon cinema, eateries that include Nando s, Frankie & Benny s, Prezzo and Costa Coffee, with a Premier Inn for out-of-town visitors. Trowbridge s sports amenities include Castle Place Leisure Centre and a public swimming pool in Frome Road. The members-only Fieldways Health Club, which is close by on Hilperton Road, has a swimming pool, spa and other facilities.
