1 UPPER HUTT STREET NAME ORIGINS MASTER I first began transcribing the address from the index and maps on the 27 th Edition of the local Upper Hutt directory. I continued adding to the list by researching at various repositories which included the Upper Hutt City website, Hutt City website, Archives NZ Wellington (Survey and Land Department records), Wises New Zealand Post Office Directories, New Zealand Electoral Rolls, newspaper collections searchable on Papers past website, Upper Hutt The History by J A Kelleher, local publications, various other websites and information from Upper Hutt residences. This is a work in progress document and as time and information becomes available additional information will be added. I am happy to receive any additions and/or alterations to the list below. An Upper Hutt Leader newspaper article stated that the naming of new streets in Upper Hutt was the responsibility of the Parks and Reserves Department of the Upper Hutt City Council. Evening Post newspaper 14 January The latest addition to the Dominion s newspaper family has reached us from the Upper Hutt. A weekly journal styled the Hutt Valley Independent published by Mr A J McCurdy for the Hutt Valley Independent and Upper Hutt Advertiser Newspaper Proprietary. It is intended to purvey local news only and to satisfy a long felt want by supplying a full and complete record of matters of special interest to people within the radius it sets out to serve. Advocate Lane was named after the Farmers Union Advocate newspaper. Angus McCurdy was at one time the secretary of the Farmers Union and was involved in the Advocate s publication. Angus McCurdy established the Hutt Valley Independent newspaper. Wairarapa Daily Times newspaper 26 November It is stated that Mr McCurdy lately secretary of the Farmers Union intends to bring a civil action claiming 256 for services in connection with the Farmers Union Advocate newspaper. Gemstones were the theme when naming the streets in the Birchville subdivision and based on the geological feature of Emerald Hill also situated in the same district of Birchville. Akatarawa Road was named after Akatarawa meaning Trailing Vines. Another tributary said Akatarawa meant hanging vine. This was the original Maori walking track from Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast to Upper Hutt in the Hutt Valley. 2 Akron Grove Alamein Avenue Alexander Road Alexandra Street Alexandria Street Alleyne Court Alleys Way Amber Grove Andrews Lane Aniseed Grove Anzac Drive Aorangi Street Akron Grove was named after the city Akron in the state of Ohio USA. American state or place name theme was used for the Totara Park subdivision. Alamein was named after the battle of El Alamein. The New Zealand Division fought in battle of El Alamein during World War Two Alexander Road may have been named after an early settler Edward Alexander or one of his descendants who farmed in the Wallaceville area (section 61). But it may have been named after Eric Edwin Alexander the contractor who built the road and owner of the Alexander Contracting Company in Upper Hutt. Alexandra Street no longer exists but was merged into and renamed the McParland Street around early 1960s. On 01 April 1962 Alexandria Street was renamed and became part of the McParland Street extension. Alexandria Street was recorded on the 1908 plan of the Upper Hutt Township Estate. Alleyne Court I was informed was named after the former wife of Mr Les Taylor a land agent who was involved initially in developing the subdivision. The only female to match was Mary Alleyne Taylor who in 1922 married John Ashmole Taylor. Alleys Way was named after Geoffrey Thomas Alley ( ) an All Black, New Zealand first National Librarian and founder of Upper Hutt Library. He retired to his Upper Hutt property. His brother was Rewi Alley ( ). Amber grove was name after the Amber gemstone. Gemstones were the theme when naming the streets in the Birchville subdivision and based on the geological feature of Emerald Hill also situated in Birchville. Andrews lane was perhaps named after W A L Andrews. I was informed after either Les Andrews or Mrs Carolyn Andrews. I was informed that W A L (Les) Andrews was a popular journalist and Director of the Upper Hutt Times newspaper. There was an Alpine plant theme for the subdivision. Anzac Drive was named after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps and ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli Turkey where the ANZAC troops fought. Aorangi Street no longer exists but was perhaps named after the Aorangi Forest Park in the Wairarapa. Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & records Aorangi Street Aragon Grove Aragon Grove was named after Catherine of Aragon who was Queen of England from 1509 until 1533 as the first wife of King Henry VIII. Kingsley Heights subdivision street names had a Royalty theme. Ararino Street Ararino Street was named after Trentham Estate (no date) recorded Liverpool, Ranfurly, Islington and Ararino streets & Housing development 02 April 1927 Fergusson Drive, John, Beth, Bristol & Ararino streets. Ararino Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Ararino Street extension Ararino Street Extension no longer exists but was renamed Ararino Street. Ararino Street extension - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & Argyle Grove Argyle Grove was named after The Grove was part of the Trentham Estate. Argyle is a diamonds pattern and often associated with the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in Scotland. Gerald & Winifred May Arnot resided in Upper Hutt in Arthur Clouston was the developer of the Clouston Park Estate which was opened on 18 March Kingsley Heights Trentham Upper Hutt 0000 Trentham Trentham Clouston Park Arundel Grove Arundel Grove was perhaps named after Arundel Castle in West Sussex England Silverstream 5019 Ashdown Way Ashdown Way was perhaps named after Ashdown House in Oxfordshire England Silverstream 5019 Ashford Lane Ashford Lane was named after Ralph Hilton Ashford Printer and co-founder of the Leader in January Geoffrey Phillip Colin Ashford was also a Printer. The Lanes in Central Upper Hutt naming theme was local newspapers or editors or people associated with these newspapers UH CBD Ashton Warner Way Avian Crescent Ashton Warner Way was named after Sylvia Ashton Warner Way ( ) a famous women New Zealand writer. Mansfield Subdivision street naming theme was famous New Zealand female writers. Mansfield Estate was a rural subdivision in Mangaroa valley between old Wallaceville and the former Whitemans properties. Mansfield was offered in November 1976 by Crest Properties Ltd (joint owners Mercantile Developments Ltd & Broadlands Dominion Group). Avian Crescent was named after the Avro Avian which was a British light aircraft designed by Avro in the 1920s and 1930s. The aircraft was flown by Sir Francis Charles Chichester KBE who was the developer and Director of the firm of Goodwin & Chichester and the Goodwin Chichester Aviation Company Ltd Wellington. Avian Crescent is off Avian Road and both roads have an Aircraft theme Whiteman s Valley 5371 Blue Mountains 5371 Avian Road Avian Road was named after the Avro Avian which was a British light aircraft designed by Avro Blue Mountains

The aircraft was flown by Sir Francis Charles Chichester KBE who was the developer and Director of the firm of Goodwin & Chichester and the Goodwin Chichester Aviation Company Ltd Wellington. Avian Road has an Aircraft theme like other roads in the same area Avro Road Avro Road was named after Avro a British aircraft manufacturer who made the WWI Avro 504 and WWII Avro Lancaster. Avro Road has an Aircraft theme just like Avian Crescent and Avian Road in the same area Bailey Grove Bailey Grove was named after Ronald Leslie (Ron) Bailey QSM. Ron ( ) was a member of Parliament for the Heretaunga Electorate from 1960 to Baltimore Crescent Baltimore Crescent was named after Baltimore in the state of Maryland USA. American state or place name theme was used for the Totara Park subdivision. Banksiana Street Banksiana Street was named after the tree Banksiana. Pinus Banksiana also known as Jack Pine is a native of Canada. Barton Avenue Barton Avenue was named after Richard Barton. Richard ( ) arrived in New Zealand in 1840 and settled in Trentham on the land where the Avenue is situated. Barton Avenue - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & Barton Road Barton Road was named after Richard Barton. Richard ( ) arrived in New Zealand in 1840 and settled in Trentham on the land where the road is situated. Barton Road - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & Bateson Way Bateson Way was named after Charles Bateson. Charles ( ) company manager resided 1911 in Trentham with his wife Alice formerly Lowe ( ). Bathurst Street Bathurst Street was perhaps named after the Governor General of New Zealand Lord Bledisloe (Charles Bathurst) or his brother Major Arthur Henry Bathurst. The Governor General of New Zealand ( ) Lord Bledisloe ( ) appointed his brother Major Arthur Henry Bathurst ( ) as the private military secretary to the Governor of New Zealand. 5 Beaufort Close Beechwood Lane Beechwood Way Benge Crescent Bentinck Street Benzie Avenue Bernadette Street would remain unchanged reference Papers past website Evening Post newspaper 05 August 1930 page 15 Beaufort Close was named after the house of Beaufort of an English noble family. The last wife of King Henry VIII was Queen Catherine Parr a descendant of the Beaufort family. In 1682 Charles II created Henry Somerset as the first Duke of Beaufort. Kingsley Heights subdivision street names had a Royalty theme. Beechwood Lane was named after the Beech tree in the area. Beechwood Lane was originally part of the old Te Marua Road before the upgrade and renaming it to Main Road on State Highway 2 Beechwood Way was named after the Beech tree in the area. Beechwood Way is a branch off Beechwood Lane Benge Crescent was named after the Benge family. The Benge's were early waggoneers taking timber to the market in Wellington. David Benge arrived in 1841 and later acquired a sawmill at the Mangaroa/Te Marua turnoff. His sons continued working the saw-mill until 1888 while other descendants became farmers in the Upper Hutt district. Arthur Clouston (also a saw miller) was the developer of the Clouston Park Estate which was opened on 18 March Bentinck Street was named after Lady Oliva Caroline Amelia Bentinck formerly Taylour. She became the owner of part section 125 Hutt District where the Bentinck Estate was situated. The land was originally purchased in 1843 by William Thompson an alderman of London but he never came to New Zealand and was one of the many absent landowners of that period. The Crown Grant was not issued until Lady Bentinick was the only child and daughter of Thomas Taylour Earl of Bective who inherited the land from William Thompson. He then signed it over to his daughter Lady Bentinck who was married to Lord Henry Cavendish Bentinck. Some people believe the Street was named after the original land owner s descendants while others believe after the 1840 NZ Company ship Lord William Bentinck. It was not named after Lady Lucy Caroline Cavendish-Bentinck as she was actually Lady Lucy Caroline Cavendish formerly Lyttleton who married Lord Frederick Cavendish. Bentinck Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Benzie Avenue was named after Charles Benzie. In 1907 Charles was the hotelkeeper at Trentham Hotel later known as Quinn s Post Hotel. In 1911 at Trentham Robert Hammond Benzie was a manager. Benzie Avenue - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Bernadette Street was named after Sister Mary Bernadette. Sister Bernadette spent 30 years at St Joseph s orphanage taking care of the children. The subdivision was developed on land owned and previously used as the farm for the St Joseph s orphanage. 6 Beryl Grove Beryl Grove was named after the Beryl gemstone. Gemstones were the theme when naming the streets in the Birchville subdivision and based on the geological feature of Emerald Hill also situated in Birchville. Beth Street Beth Street was named after I was informed that John Street and Beth Street were named after the children of the developer of the Trentham Estate. Horace Graham Rutter & Co was the land agent in Main Road Upper Hutt and advertised for sale the sections in the both streets. Horace s wife was Elizabeth. I do not know who the developer of the subdivision was. John Skeoch Rutter born 1899 & Elizabeth Marion Rutter born 1901 parents were Marion and Thomas Rutter. Thomas may have been the brother of the land agent Horace Graham Rutter. The street was part of the Trentham Estate and the civil engineers were Beere and Seddon. The housing development 02 April 1927 records Fergusson Drive, John, Beth, Bristol, Ararino streets. Beth Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Betty Watt Grove Betty Watt Grove was named after Betty Watt (nee Thorner). Betty was New Zealand representative in Cricket ( ) and Hockey ( ). In Upper Hutt she was known for working with the elderly and bereavement support. The Riverstone Terrace subdivision street naming theme was Upper Hutt citizens who made a contribution to the district. Birch Grove Birch Grove was named after the large number of Birch trees in the area. In 1951 Deller subdivision Pinehaven records Pinehaven Road, Birch Grove & Winchester Avenue and the agents Goodwin & Chichester were also involved as well as H Ernest Leighton Ltd. Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume recorded Birch Grove. Birch Street Birch Street no longer exists. Birch Street is now part of Lane Street. Birch Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Birch Terrace Birch Terrace was named after the Birch trees growing in the area. Birch Terrace - Wises NZ Birkinshaw Grove Black beech Street Blackbridge Road Post Office Directory volume & Birkinshaw Grove was named after Grant Birkinshaw the Upper Hutt City Council Planner at the beginning of the Craig s Flat project. The Riverstone Terrace subdivision street naming theme was Upper Hutt citizens who made a contribution to the district. Black Beech Street was named after the native Black Beech trees growing in the area. Black Beech Street in Birchville was originally Kowhai Street Blackbridge Road no longer exists but was once the main road to Akatarawa. Blackbridge Road was renamed Bridge Road. I located the information above but with additional research I have only been able to locate references to Blackbridge Lower Hutt and only a Blackbridge Road Upper Hutt in the Wises Directory. 7 Blenheim Street Blenheim was named after the early NZ Company ship Blenheim that arrived in Wellington in George Brown his parents and siblings arrived in NZ on the ship Blenheim. George was also the developer of the subdivision. Blenheim Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Blewman Street Blewman Street no longer exists. J Blewman was an Upper Hutt Councillor. Blewman Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Blockhouse Lane Blockhouse Lane was named after the Blockhouse which is situated at the end of the Lane. The Wallaceville Blockhouse is an historical defence structure built in Blue Mountains Road Blue Mountains Road was named because of the colour caused by early morning light against the hills in the area as seen from the land agent office of Goodwin & Chichester. Blue Mountains Road - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume Blueberry Grove Blueberry Grove was named after the plant Blueberry. There was an Alpine plant theme for the subdivision. Blundell Way Blundell Way was named after the Blundell family who owned land at Trentham. Henry Blundell (1813 Ireland-1878 Sydney Australia) was the founder of the early Wellington Evening Post newspaper. He held freehold sections No 11 & 33 at Wallaceville Upper Hutt as detailed in the Hutt Electoral Roll 1870 & When Henry died in Australia his body was brought back to New Zealand and buried at Bolton Street cemetery in Wellington. Or was it named after Sir Denis Blundell ( ) Governor General of New Zealand Boleyn Close Boleyn Close was named after Anne Boleyn who was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Kingsley Heights Bonnie Glen Crescent Bracken Street subdivision street names had a Royalty theme. Bonnie Glen Crescent was named after the homestead Bonnie Glen built and owned by Angus John McCurdy. Angus started building Bonnie Glen also known as The Castle in 1891 on the plateau across the river at the junction of the Hutt river and Whakatiki Street. It was later destroyed by fire. Angus John McCurdy the first Mayor of Upper Hutt and editor of the Hutt Valley Independent newspaper. Bracken Street was named after Perhaps after Thomas Bracken ( ) the journalists who wrote New Zealand s national anthem. Or perhaps after the Bracken fern that grew in the area. Julia formerly Whiteman was a social columnist for the former Upper Hutt Times newspaper and later Editor of the Upper Hutt Leader ( ). Brentwood Street Brentwood Street was named after Brentwood the home of Lord Henry William Petre in Essex. Trentham Lord Petre s son Henry William Petre ( ) of the New Zealand Company was an early land owner in Upper Hutt. He gifted land in Upper Hutt to the Catholic Parish of St Josephs. Brentwood Street was formerly Tawai Street Extension. Brentwood Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & Bridge Road Bridge Road was named because of the bridge on the road that crossed the Hutt River at Birchville Akatarawa. Bridge Road was originally named Blackbridge Road and was once the main road to Akatarawa. Brown Street Brown Street was named after James Brown and his family who were the first settlers in the town of Upper Hutt. James s son George was the developer of the subdivision. Brown Street - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & UH CBD Wallaceville Bulls Run Road Burghley Way Burns Grove Bush Grove Bulls Run Road was named after Bulls Run Road is a rural dirt and sometimes paper road that runs around boundary of Craigs flat (Riverstone Terrace) and Moonshine Valley Porirua. It link into Moonshine Road & Cooks Road of Moonshine Valley Porirua. There was a story regarding a Bull that use to wander around this area so perhaps this is the origin of the name Burghley Way was named after Lord Burghley. William Cecil was the first Baron Burghley and chief minister and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I of England. Kingsley Heights subdivision street names had a Royalty theme. Burns Grove was named after Robert Burns. Robert ( ) was a Scottish poet and lyricist. Poets or literature scholars were the naming theme in the Poets Block subdivision Bush Grove was named after Perhaps after the bush covering the area. Bush Grove - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume Byron Street Byron Street was named after Lord George Gordon Byron. George ( ) was an English poet in the Romantic movement. 9 Cairo Street Cairo Street was named after Cairo the Capital of Egypt. In 1915 during World War One Cairo Ebdentown and Alexandria became the main hospital for Gallipoli wounded. Cairo and Alexandria Streets were drawn on a 1908 plan of the Upper Hutt Township Estate. California Drive California Drive was named after California a state in USA. American state or place name Totara Park theme was used for the Totara Park subdivision. Camden Road Camden Road was named after Camden in the state of New Jersey USA. American state or Totara Park place name theme was used for the Totara Park subdivision. The street was not named after Father Robert Camden as first told. Camp Road Camp Road was named after the road that leads into the Trentham Military Camp. Wises NZ Trentham Post Office Directory volume & 1959 & recorded Camp Road Camp Street Camp Street was named as it was the street lead into the Trentham Military Camp. Heretaunga Campbell Street Campbell Street no longer exists. Campbell street was renamed Murray Street in The Upper Hutt 0000 Upper Hutt Borough Council decided that Campbell street was to be called Murray street reference Papers past website Evening Post newspaper 30 April 1930 page 16 Cannon Point Road Cannon Point Road was named after the Cannon Point Hill situated behind Totara Park. Craig Flat 5372 Cannon Point hill was named after an old tree on the hill that resembled a Cannon. Cannon point is not a trig (surveyor) point. Cannon Point Road runs into a dirt road leading to the Cannon Point Walkway that leads up to the top of Cannon Point hill. Totara Park Carlow Grove Carlow Grove was named after County Carlow in Ireland. An Irish street naming theme was Birchville put forward by developer Kevin Joseph Regan ( ) who was involved in the Emerald Hill development. Carroll Grove Carroll Grove was named after Trentham Carroll Grove - Wises NZ Post Office Directory volume & Cassino Grove Cassino Grove was named after the World War Two battle of Monte Cassino. It was a brutal Trentham Camp and costly battle involving the New Zealand Forces in Italy. Cecil Street Cecil Street was named after John Cecil Salisbury born 24 January 1900 NZ died 1984 NZ. Clouston Park His parents Kate Amelia & Ernest James Salisbury owned a poultry farm on the property that was subdivided. Arthur Clouston was the developer of the Clouston Park Estate which was opened on 18 March Charles Street in the same subdivision was named after Cecil s older brother Charles Henry Salisbury who was killed in action during WWI. Cederholm Grove Cederholm Grove was named after the Cederholm family. Wilfred Theodor Cederholm was Brown Owl retired Farmer of Maoribank Upper Hutt who owned land in the area. His son Peter Vant Cederholm was an accountant of Silverstream. Centre Walk Centre Walk was named as it is an area situated in the centre of Upper Hutt UH CBD Charles Street Charles Street was named after Charles Henry Salisbury born 19 July 1895 NZ killed in action Clouston Park 9

His parents Kate Amelia & Ernest James Salisbury owned a poultry farm on the property that was subdivided.
