Sightseeing and National Park Information Kenya Mount Kenya & the Mount Kenya National Park Mount Kenya National Park is located 175 km from Nairobi and was opened to visitors in December It covers an area of about 715 square kilometres around Mt Kenya, between altitudes of 11,000ft and 17,058ft above sea level. Mount Kenya, or "Kere Nyaga" as the Kikuyu call it, meaning the Mountain of Brightness, rises to 5,199m above sea level and is the second highest mountain peak in the entire continent of Africa. Mount Kenya attracts mountain climbers, and there are routes of varying degrees of difficulty that lead to the top, all offering spectacular scenic beauty. The park was opened to visitors in December Spectacular scenery is an important aspect of the park, with lovely lakes, tarns, glaciers, peaks and natural mineral springs in the area. The vegetation naturally varies according to the height. Dry upland forests are found in the lower slopes, which change to mountain forest from 2,000m upwards. This forest generally consists of cedar and podo. The vegetation changes to a thick bamboo forest at around 2,500m which, in turn, changes to the upper forest of smaller trees and high altitude moss. Visitors can observe a variety of plants (of at least 11 species) and animals including the black and white Colobus, Sykes monkey, bushbuck, buffalo, and elephant. At lower altitudes, animals like the olive baboon, waterbuck, black rhino, black fronted, duiker, leopard, giant forest hog, genet cat, bush pig and hyena are found. A rare sighting is the elusive bongo, a forest antelope. Other endangered species found in the forests include the Sunni buck, Mt. Kenya Mole Shrew, skins (lizard), and different types of owls. The albino zebra is another less frequent sighting. The forests give way to high altitude heath and shrubs between 3,000m and 3,500m altitude. Above 3,500m there is open moorland, where animals like the high altitude zebra and eland are to be found. Samburu, Shaba & Buffalo Springs Game Reserves In the arid North of Kenya, water means life. The waters of the great Ewaso Nyiro River draw wildlife in great numbers to its banks, creating an oasis of green. This river flows through three great northern reserves, Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. This is spectacular country, set against a backdrop of the mighty Mountain Ol Olokwe. 14 I CBT Holidays

17 East Africa Sightseeing and National Park Information The verdant riverine forest is a stark contrast to the arid thorn studded plains. Samburu is visited by large herds of elephants, drawn by the promise of water. In the dry season, the elephants use their tusks to dig deep into the dry river beds, unearthing precious water. These waterholes then become a focal point for other game. The Samburu region is the best place to find several endemic Northern species, including Gerenuk, the Reticulated Giraffe, and Grevy s Zebra. The forests along the river banks are home to many birds, including local species such as the Palm Nut Vulture and the Vinaceous Dove. These forests are also home to many Leopards, often seen at dusk. The sight of one of these beautiful and elusive creatures is always a rare treat. Lions are also frequently seen on the riverbanks, and Cheetah can be found on the open plains. On rare occasion, packs of African Hunting Dogs are sighted passing through the reserve. Shaba was where Joy Adamson, author of Born Free spent her final years, returning a leopard to the wild. This was the subject of her final book, Queen of Shaba. More recently, Shaba served as the location for the hit series Survivor Africa, which pitted its contestants against the challenges of this wild remote country. The Ewaso Nyiro is also an important water source for the Samburu villages surrounding the reserves. The Samburu culture is a truly fascinating one, sharing a great deal of ancestral and linguistic ties to the Maasai. The Samburu are herders of Camels and Goats, and are often seen on the reserve boundaries bringing their animals to water. In areas around the reserves, there are several private sanctuaries working closely with the Samburu to protect both their tribal lands and the local wildlife. These sanctuaries are open to guests, and are well worth visiting for those interested in Samburu culture. The entire Samburu region is a place of breathtaking and magical beauty, a place where the vision of a deep red sunset silhouetting the doum palms along the river as a leopard emerges to hunt brings the perfect end to a day on safari... Amboseli National Park Amboseli is a fairly small national park of 390 sq kms situated south of Nairobi, bordering Tanzania. One of the most popular safari parks in Kenya, it provides excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year, stunning landscapes and a good selection of lodges and camps. However, what really sets it apart from other national parks is the spectacular backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa. Most of the cat species, including leopard, lion, cheetah and caracal, are present in the park and the open plains provide good chances of sightings. Amboseli is also famous for its large herds of buffalo and especially elephants. Bull elephants here have some of the largest tusks ever recorded and have been the subject of ground breaking work by renowned naturalist Cynthia Moss over the past twenty years. Amboseli is to the south-east of Nairobi. It can be reached by air, which takes 1 hour from Nairobi s Wilson airport, or by road which takes about 3½ hours. Lake Nakuru National Park Lake Nakuru National Park covers 188 sq kms and is dominated by the shallow waters of the lake at its centre. The lake itself is about 62 sq km and the birdlife is superb, with over 450 species recorded. Lake Nakuru is especially famous for its concentrations of greater and lesser flamingos and pelicans, which at certain times of year number in the millions. The landscape surrounding the lake is a picturesque combination of savannah, marshes and woodland which supports a good variety of wildlife. Tree climbing lions, buffalo, waterbuck, Burch ell s zebra, hippo, baboons, impala and Rothschild's giraffe can all be seen, and Nakuru is recognised as one of the best places in the country for daytime leopard sightings. The national park is also one of Kenya's premier rhino sanctuaries, with good numbers of breeding white and black rhino. Lake Nakuru National Park is 2 hours drive north of Nairobi, and is accessible using 2-wheel-drive vehicles. A leisurely drive around the lake takes about 3 hours. Masai Mara Game Reserve Probably the most famous of the reserves, the Masai Mara, in Kenya's south western corner, boasts an astonishing amount of game. Unfenced, the Mara is bounded in the east by the Ngama Hills and in the west by the Oloololo or Siria Escarpment. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers and where prey is found so are predators. Not only is this a great place in which to find game, but the wide greeny-gold savannahs spotted with thorn trees make it ideal for photography. The Mara, as it is known in Kenya, is ravishingly beautiful and also offers long, undisturbed views and utterly dramatic panoramas. The weather really means something here. The sun may beat down unforgivingly, huge clouds in fabulous shapes may sweep across the widest of skies, the wind ripples the grasses as though they are stroked by a giant hand. The landscape is stunning. The famously black-manned Mara lions are possibly the stars of the Mara show, but cheetah, elephant, kongoni, topi, Thompson's gazelle, waterbuck, hyena, and primates are all here too. As with the rest of Kenya, the birding is good. There is no settlement within the reserve however; the Mara is in theory owned by the Maasai, pastoralists and, in earlier times, renowned lion-killers. Lodges and hotels offer the opportunity to buy their beadwork, checked cloths and copies of their spears. It is said that if lions scent approaching Maasai on the breeze they move swiftly in the opposite direction. Famously, the Mara is the northerly end of the Great Migration, that great primeval surge of wildebeest, zebra and antelope that sweeps in from Tanzania's Serengeti to Kenya's Masai Mara as the Tanzanian grass starts to fail. They are tracked by the large predators that pick off the weak, the stragglers and the young. The great herds, nearing their destination by July, mass along the Mara River pushing, shoving and fantastically noisy, just waiting for the first animal to cross so that they can all follow, lemming-like, on the final leg of the journey. However, crocodiles lie in wait, sluggishly cruising the waters, fully prepared for their best meal of the year. Many fail in the life-and-death struggle - drowned, eaten by the crocodiles or, made careless or weak by their stressful swim, brought down by lions. The Masai Mara is terrible yet wonderful, and not to be missed. Nairobi It is impossible to believe that just over 100 years ago the only visitors to the area which is now Nairobi were the Maasai tribe, who used to water their cattle at a "boggy waterhole". They called it Enkare Nyarobi literally 'the place of cold water'. In the dying years of the 19th century as the Uganda railway forged its way through Kenya, the area became a railhead for the assault on the eastern wall of the escarpment. Because of the swampy surroundings, the railway workers camps rapidly turned into a shanty town, inhabited by rats which brought the plague, and it is doubtful if anyone could envisage that one day this would become the 'City in the Sun'. Between the 1903 and 1908 potential settlers arrived in Kenya responding to the promise of cheap agricultural land (which did not strictly belong to the government to give away) and many wealthy sportsmen arrived to hunt the game. Hotels sprang up to cater for the visitors and the base for the valuable tourist industry was laid during those early years. In 1950 Nairobi became a City by Royal Charter, the streets ablaze with flowering trees and shrubs and to this day the flowering jacaranda trees in the later months of the year are one of Nairobi's great attractions. Nairobi is now a city of around 3 million people and the heart of the commerce and industry for the whole of East Africa. Over the years the city has developed with modern infrastructure, the expected high rise buildings, tourist hotels and many places of entertainment. Additionally Nairobi has a near perfect climate, lying 144 km south of the equator at an altitude of 5451ft (1662m) and 494 km from the shores of the Indian Ocean. The city has maintained its cosmopolitan ambience which is apparent, not only in the different races and communities who work in and around the city, but also in the architecture and variety of religious buildings, churches, temples, mosques, synagogues. UNIQUE DESTINATIONS I 15

18 East Africa Sightseeing and National Park Information The range of attractions and places to visit are amazing. A typical day could perhaps start with a tour of the city, including visits to the excellent Railway Museum with its records of the history of the railway (which is also the history of the country). Here visitors may see the carriage from which an unfortunate Superintendent for the Railway was dragged by a man-eating lion in the year The National Museum of Kenya has fine exhibits of East African fauna, birds, fish and reptiles as well as collection of cultural merit. An organised tour may also include visits to the City Hall and Law Courts, the bazaars and the markets with their colourful displays of locally grown fruit and flowers as well as handicrafts and many different centres of worship, including the spectacular Jamia Mosque. A visit should be paid to the Memorial Park, created in memory of the many victims of the inhumane bombing of the American Embassy and nearby buildings on 7 August This is the only city in the world which has a National Park on its doorstep, and within a short drive visitors enter completely a different world the Nairobi National Park. Lion, cheetah, buffalo and rhino as well as more common plains game like gazelles, zebra, ostrich and giraffe live within the park. Many will have heard of the film 'Out of Africa' which starred Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen and Robert Redford as her lover, Denys Finch Hatton. The well developed suburb of Karen takes its name from the author, and any visit to this area should include a visit to her old home set in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills'. A short distance away, the Giraffe Centre, where the history of the endangered Rothschild Giraffe (which include the famous "Daisy Rothschild") can be studied and the descendants of the family can be fed, will also appeal. A morning visit can be paid to the famous Daphne Sheldrake orphans, tiny elephant, rhino and occasionally a kudu which have been rescued from the wilds and are brought up until they are capable of returning to the bush. Within the environs of Nairobi there are several excellent golf courses (one running alongside the main highway opposite the city centre); a proliferation of social clubs offering facilities for cricket, tennis, field hockey, squash, rugby and swimming and a popular race course set alongside the indigenous forest. The unique and popular Carnivore spit roast complex on the edge of the game park offers game meat as a speciality, in addition to the more normal roasts expected by dedicated meat-eaters. As a 'Safari capital' of East Africa, Nairobi has more than enough to entertain any visitor for several days, either before of after their planned safari. Tanzania Tarangire National Park Lying south of the Serengeti, Tarangire is the least visited of the northern circuit national parks. Covering 2,600 km², the park is characterized by thick grasses and giant baobab trees, which imbue it with a particularly wild feel. Tarangire is most spectacular during the dry season months of July to October, when enormous herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, as well as rhino, greater kudu, leopard, lion, rhino, Oryx, impala and giraffe, are all attracted from miles around to the permanent waters of the Tarangire River. more time, the southern areas of the park are well worth exploring. Here a variety of swamp, lake and savannah habitats support large herds of buffalo, as well as cheetah, gerenuk and reedbuck. Ngorongoro Conservation Area Popularly known as the eighth wonder of the world, the Ngorongoro crater is a spectacular micro-ecosystem that boasts almost all of East Africa's famous wildlife species. The Ngorongoro crater is 16 kilometres in diameter and with walls 610 metre high, it is the largest intact crater in the world. More remarkable still, its confines are home to over 25,000 large mammals. Hemmed in by the forested walls, the crater floor has a combination of soda lakes, acacia forests, lush marshes, and dry savannah. These diverse habitats support the full cast of East Africa's brilliant animal and bird life; lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, leopard, ostriches, flamingos, eagles, vultures to name but a few. The teeming bird population includes more than 100 species not found in the Serengeti. The Ngorongoro is a conservation area that is owned by the Masai and in this part of Tanzania the Masai, in their striking traditional dress, are as much a part of the scene as the huge population of wild animals. Serengeti National Park A vast expanse of flat savannah grasses stretching from horizon to horizon, broken only by an occasional gnarled acacia and rocky kopje, the Serengeti has some of the highest wildlife concentrations in the whole of Africa. Year round it is one of the best safari holiday destinations to see the "big five"; elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo, whilst the central Seronera area of the Serengeti has one of the continent's densest populations of the elusive leopard. The short grass on the Serengeti plains makes it easier to see many of the smaller animals that are always present in the African bush but seldom observed. Fascinating creatures such as aardwolf, porcupines, badgers, jackals, mongooses, meerkats and pangolins can all be sighted. Adding to the resident wildlife is the annual migration of the wildebeest. Their journey starts in December in the southern Serengeti and finally leaves the northern Serengeti in early August, heading into Kenya. Vast numbers of zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland and gazelle species also get caught up in the wildebeest throng. Keeping them company is a travelling band of predators and scavengers taking full advantage of the extra food on offer. Lake Manyara National Park Stretched along the base of the rift valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of 390 km². The lake is a ground water reservoir, which is partially fed by small rivers and hot springs. The park is well known for its tree-climbing lions, which spend hours in the branches of giant acacia trees up to ten metres above the ground. It also has a big elephant population and a wide range of other large mammals. The stunning views of the flamingo-filled lake and the Rift Valley escarpment rising up behind it make Lake Manyara a particularly rewarding safari destination for artists and photographers. Birdwatchers will also find this park especially worthwhile with nearly 400 species present. Among them are bee-eaters, kingfishers, storks, hornbills, over 50 raptor species as well as huge flocks of pelicans and flamingos whose pink colours light up the waters of the lake. Together with Lake Manyara, Tarangire offers the best bird watching on the northern circuit. There are about 470 resident species, with migrant species bringing this count to over 500 in the Septemberto-April period. Typical species are the distinctive red and yellow barbet, yellow-collared lovebirds, and a variety of babblers and larks. Interesting raptors include the pale chanting goshawk, African fish eagle, and the shikra. The Tarangire river system also supports a good number of water birds. If you have only a day or two in Tarangire during your safari then the northern part of the park offers the best game viewing. For those with 16 I CBT Holidays

Spectacular as it is, the crater accounts for just a tenth of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater is home to many species of wild game and birds. With the exception of impala and topi (due to fierce competition with the wildebeest) and the giraffe (because there is not much to eat at tree level), almost every species of African plains mammal lives in the crater, including the endangered black rhino, and the densest population of predators in Africa. The birdlife, which includes the flamingo, is mainly seasonal, and is also affected by the ratio of soda to fresh water in Lake Magadi on the crater floor. Dinner and overnight at crater lodge. He is one of the first Wallachian rulers to spend quite a bit of time in Bucharest, rather than in the capital city of Targoviste. Overnight in Bucharest. 15 Oct Day 14 Bucharest v Curtea de Arges v Poenari v Sibiu Meal: B/L/D The great medieval city of Sibiu in Transylvania is your destination today, but you will also discover some important sights in Wallachia on the way. First, you will stop at Curtea de Arges, where you will visit the monastery there. Then, head north for a short drive towards the Carpathians and visit the Poienari Fortress, the actual castle of Vlad the Impaler. It was built right after he made it to the throne, in 1456, and the legend has it that the people who worked here were none others than the nobles whom he had arrested under charges of treason. Not many of them survived to see it completed, since the work conditions were very harsh and besides, the fortress sits atop of a tall hill. Nowadays, it takes a climb of some 1500 steps to make it up to the ruins. Arrive in Sibiu in the afternoon, check in at the hotel. Your guide will take you for a short orientation walk in the central area, and 30 I CBT Holidays then you can enjoy some time on your own. Overnight in Sibiu. 16 Oct Day 15 Sibiu v Sighisoara Meal: B/L/D Start your day by enjoying a guided walk in Sibiu s Old Town. In the Middle Ages, Sibiu was the most developed and fortified city of the seven that were founded and governed by the Saxons. This is where, for some time in its long history, the governors of Transylvania resided. At its heyday, Sibiu had no less than 7 concentric walls built around the city, as it was an important trading post and was often attacked by various migratory people, and later on by the Turks. An excellent example of German Gothic architecture, Sibiu was appointed as European Cultural Capital for It is also the place where the first museum in Romania was open (The Brukenthal Museum) in 1817, only seven years after the National Gallery in London. Your guided stroll will include sights such as the Large Square, Small Square, the Catholic Church, Liars Bridge and the magnificent Evangelical Church. Then, head east, for the town of Sighisoara, one of the best preserved medieval cities in Eastern Europe. On the way, discover one more of Transylvania s architecture gems, by visiting the Biertan Fortified Church (UNESCO World Heritage site). The Saxons are the ones who used this style of architecture extensively in the Transylvanian villages between the 13th and 15th centuries, as a way to protect themselves against the invasions that occurred often. This type of churches is also known as the peasant fortified churches, as they were built and maintained by locals. The Biertan Church is the last one to be built according to this pattern, in the early 16th century. For about 200 years after it was built it served as the seat of the Transylvanian Archbishop, thus becoming one of the most important churches in the region. The church has been beautifully restored recently, and the fortification systems are largely intact. A most interesting addition is the room used for married couples whose marriage did not go very smoothly: they would be locked in there for a while with just one spoon, one fork and one plate, and they would have no choice but to share everything and also talk their problems through. Sighisoara s Old Town: After the visit of the Biertan Church, continue to Sighisoara. Sighisoara is, like Brasov and Sibiu, one of the seven cities founded by the Saxons. It stands out, however, due to the fact that the fortification systems of the upper town are still largely intact, and this makes Sighisoara the only inhabited citadel in Europe. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a guided walk through the Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage site), and visit the History Museum (located inside the 800-year-old Clock Tower), from the top of which you can enjoy a magnificent view over the whole old town and the Arms Museum. Then you will make your way up the hill using a wooden, covered staircase built in the 1600's to facilitate access to the Church-on-the Hill, a beautiful example of Gothic architecture of the 14th century. Vlad the Impaler Dracula: Sighisoara is also famous for being the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, perhaps the source of inspiration for the main character of Bram Stoker s Dracula. Born here in 1431, he became famous as a king of Wallachia in the 1450s. The house he was born in is still standing, nowadays housing one of Sighisoara s famous restaurants. In the evening, join a family of Transylvanian Gypsies for a home hosted dinner. This is a rare opportunity to discover more about the culture, traditions and lifestyle of this controversial ethnic group. Overnight in Sighisoara. 17 Oct Day 16 Sighisoara v Bran Castle v Brasov Meal: B/L/D After breakfast, you will depart Sighisoara, heading for Brasov. On the way, you will visit one of the most famous sights in Romania, the Bran Castle (also known as Dracula s Castle). The castle was built as a military fortress by the merchants of Brasov, so that

33 THE BEST OF ROMANIA & BULGARIA it could help them overlook and defend the trade route that connected the provinces of Wallachia and Transylvania. At the beginning of the 20th century the city of Brasov donated the castle to the Romanian Royal Family, and it became the summer residence of the second queen of the Romanians, Maria. She is the one who renovated the castle extensively in the 1920's, transforming it from an austere military fortress to a comfortable, yet simple residence. After the visit, you will have some time to explore the souvenir vendors around the castle, or maybe taste some of the traditional cheeses and palinkas (plum or pear brandy) sold by the locals. Then drive to the city of Brasov. Southern Transylvania is famous for its 7 cities which were founded and ruled by the Saxon merchants from the 1200's on. Brasov is one of the largest towns of the seven, and the central area in the Old Town has a distinct Central European feel to it. You will enjoy a guided walk in the Old Town, and admire sights such as the Black Church (the largest Gothic cathedral in southeastern Europe), the Old Town Square, the old city walls and the St. Nicholas Church, the main church of the Romanian community in the Middle Ages, next to which we also find the very first Romanian language school in the country. Overnight in Brasov. 18 Oct Day 17 Brasov v Peles v Snagov v Bucharest Meal: B/L In the morning, you will depart from Brasov and head for the mountains of Transylvania. After a 2 hours' drive, you will arrive in Sinaia, a little town which has always been linked to the Romanian Royal family. Here we visit Peles Castle, an astounding royal residence, built by Carol I, Romania s first king, at the end of the 19th century. The King chose the location himself, and the construction took 39 years until the residence was completed. At the time of its building, the castle was one of the most modern buildings in Europe, with electricity, a central vacuum cleaning system and central heating. No expenses were spared in building it, and some of the most famous craftsmen and architects of Europe were employed by the King. The interior decorations are exquisite, with Carrara marble, Murano chandeliers and Venetian mirrors, and some 40 wood types were used for the wood carvings on the walls. Next, you ll have an encounter with the Romanian Orthodox faith and Romanian church architecture, by visiting the Sinaia Monastery. The old church was built by a member of the Cantacuzino family at the end of the 17th century. Upon returning to his country after a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he decided to build a monastery that would remind people of Mount Sinai, hence the name Sinaia. The old monastery was the first building in the area (and gave the town its name) and a new church was added to the monastery complex later on, in the 1840s. In the afternoon, you will head for Bucharest, and on the way, take a detour to make a quick stop at the Snagov Monastery. Situated in the middle of a lake just outside of Bucharest, the monastery was built by Vlad s ancestors, and it believed that it is here that he was buried. It is unclear by whose hand he died, even though we know that it happened while fighting the Turks outside of Bucharest. His head was sent to Istanbul, as proof of his death, but his body was buried with great haste and secrecy, so all we have right now about Vlad s burial place is a legend. After visiting what is believed to be Vlad s final resting place, you will arrive in Bucharest. Overnight in Bucharest. 19 Oct Day 18 Bucharest v Giurgiu- Arbanassi v VelikoTarnovo Meal: B/L/D You will then continue for the border with Bulgaria, where we will change the bus and the guide and then onto Veliko Tarnovo. Then you will drive to the village of Arbanassi, a small architectural gem with houses and churches from the 17th and 18th centuries. The village enjoyed some privileges from the Ottoman sultan and was the residence of rich merchants in the past. Now it is a great and beloved place for both locals and tourists. The most famous church is the Nativity church where you can admire the beautiful fresco depicting the circle of life. Depending on the day of the week you can also see the Konstantzalieva House and learn about the way of life in the 17th century of a wealthy local family. The village offers spectacular views over the town of Veliko Tarnovo. In the afternoon, you will explore Veliko Tarnovo or the town of noblemen as it is called in Bulgaria. You will take a stroll along the historical Samovodene Street in the Old Town. There you will find a charming handicraft shops and get acquainted with some traditional local crafts like iconpainting, wood-carving, weaving, coppersmithing, silver-smithing, etc. You can even enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee made on hot sand the way it was prepared for the craftsmen and tradesmen 100 years ago. Then you will discover the symbol of the city the Tzarevetz fortification, which was the seat of the kings and the Bulgarian patriarch during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The fortress walls and watchtowers, as well as the Patriarch s church on top of the hill can still be seen. You will also see the so-called Baldwin Tower surrounded by legends and myths where supposedly one of the most prominent leaders of the Fourth Crusade, Baldwin of Flanders, was interned and died. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo. 20 Oct Day 19 VelikoTarnovo v Madara Horseman v Varna v Nessebar Meal: B/L/D Then you will drive to the sea capital of Bulgaria the town of Varna. Along the way you will take a short detour to the village of Madara and see another monument from UNESCO s World Heritage list the Madara Horseman. It is dated to the 8th century, the era of the early history of the Bulgarians. It is a relief cut in vertical rocks and depicting a rider on a horse. The horseman is thrusting his spear in a lion at his horse s feet, there is a dog running behind him and an eagle flying ahead of him. It possibly represents a military victory or a Thracian god. The Madara Horseman is seen as one of the symbols of the Bulgarian State. In the afternoon, you will start by discovering Varna. Once you arrive at the summer capital of Bulgaria you can take a short stroll along the pedestrian street where you will find a number of lovely cafes and small restaurants for lunch. As you are exploring the city with your guide you will pass by the train station the first in the country to connect the port of Varna with the town of Ruse on the Danube and provide a commercial link between Europe and Istanbul. You will also have a short stop at the port area to enjoy the view of the bay UNIQUE DESTINATIONS I 31

34 and the port. Then along the beautiful Sea Garden, the favorite park of the locals, you will drive by the Maritime Museum, the former Greek neighborhood in town, the ruins of the Roman baths. You will visit the Archaeological Museum (depends on the day of the week your visit takes place) to see the Varna Necropolis and its unique findings some of the gold items were dated back to 4000 BC. The museum takes us on a trip through the history of Odessos, the ancient name of the town, revealing layer after layer. You can visit the Orthodox cathedral, the Dormition of the Theotokos, dominating the main square in town and rightfully deserving to be one of the city s landmarks. Then you will continue to the town of Nessebar. The Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage site) is more than 9000 years old and is situated on a tiny peninsula, and a narrow strip of land connects this small jewel to the mainland. Nessebar not only has many layers of history, beautiful old churches and houses but also the charm of a fishermen settlement, narrow cobbled stoned streets, lovely little restaurants overlooking the sea and the smell of the salty sea water in the air. Your guide will take you on a guided walk to show you the hidden treasures of Nessebar, and then you will enjoy some free time for further exploring on your own. Overnight in Nessebar. 21 Oct Day 20 Nesebar v Kazanlak v Plovdiv Meal: B/L Today you will drive to Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture for On the way, we stop at Kazanlak the town located in the Valley of the Roses and the Thracian Kings. Here, you will visit the Thracian Tomb (UNESCO World Heritage site) you will visit the copy as visits to the original are rarely possible. Discovered in 1944, this tomb dates from the Hellenistic period, around the end of the 4th century BC. It is located near Seutopolis, the capital city of the Thracian king Seutes III, and is part of a large Thracian necropolis. The tomb has a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing Thracian burial rituals and culture. These paintings are Bulgaria s best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period. Originally Plovdiv was a Thracian settlement before being overrun by Philip and becoming a major city ruled by the Greeks and then the Romans. The city is located on both banks of the Maritsa River and historically has developed on 7 hills. It has an abundancet of monuments from different historical periods Thrace, Romans, antiquity, middle ages, the Ottoman rule, and the National revival. Plovdiv also has a unique artistic atmosphere with its many prominent artists, galleries and boutique bistros where the locals gather. During our guided walk in the afternoon, we will admire some of the highlights of Plovdiv. As we discover the Old Town we will see the Antique Theatre (entrance included). Built in the early 2nd century A.D. by the Roman Emperor Traianus (98-117), the theatre was one of the most important public buildings in Trimontium, remarkable with its architectural impressiveness and splendour. The ancient theatre seated 5 to 7 thousand. It still is the centre of the cultural life in Plovdiv. Another trace from the Roman times is the Roman stadium under the main street in town. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Septimus Severus ( ) and had a capacity to seat spectators. Now the larger part of it remains still underground but the stadium is visible from the Dzhumayata Square. The Old Town of Plovdiv also has good examples of the Bulgarian Renaissance architecture with a few houses that are masterpieces of the local architectural tradition. Nowadays many of them are galleries, museums; some are turned into restaurants and boutique hotels. It lies at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain which is the favorite place of the city s residents for hiking and skiing. On your guided walk along the central area of the town you will discover traces from the Roman and Thracian times as well as beautiful examples of the 19th and early 20th century European architecture usually the work of German, Austrian or Italian architects. Many airlines have strict upgrade policy; not all booking classes are upgradable to premium economy or business class. Please check with us when making your reservation. You may need to pay extra for certain upgradable booking class; but this is not guaranteed that you can be upgraded and subject to airlines final availability and confirmation. 4. Cancellations and cancellation fees Cancellations are very costly and usually do not occur in time for re-sale of the cancelled tour. All cancellation must be sent to CBT Holidays in writing. For cancellations received within 60 days prior to departure, the following per person cancellation fees apply. Initial Deposit is non refundable. More than 60 days prior to departure: deposit days prior to departure: 25% of total price days prior to departure: 50% of total price days prior to departure: 75% of total price 30 days prior to departure: 100% of total price. The air ticket may be issued after the second deposit is made. If cancellation is made 60 days before departure but after air ticket has been issued is subject to airline s cancellation fee + Initial deposit. CBT Holidays reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any tours; the only responsibility of CBT Holidays will be to refund to the passenger the amount we have received for the tour reservation. All tour itineraries are subject to minor change upon local arrangement. 5. Insurance There is no insurance coverage in our tour price; and no responsibility is accepted by CBT Holidays for any loss of or damage to baggage or any of the tour participant s belongings. We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive insurance cover against any cancellation, medical expenses, personal accident, loss or damage of personal baggage / belongings, money and public liability before you travel. The best time for buying your insurance is when you are paying the tour deposit. 6. Amendment fees A fee of $50 per transaction may apply for any alteration or amendment made to a confirmed reservation. Airline penalties also apply. A change to traveller name after air tickets have been issued will be treated as a cancellation and cancellation fees apply. 7. Travellers who need special assistance You must report any disability on the booking form at the time of reservation. CBT Holidays will assist the special needs of less mobile travellers, but is not responsible in the event it is unable to do so. We regret that we cannot provide any individual assistance to a tour participant during the tour, so a qualified companion must accompany travellers who need such assistance, who must take total responsibility for the handicapped participant for the whole tour. 8. Single Traveller For group land tours only, CBT Holidays will try to match up singles of the same gender in twin-bedded rooms. But when finalizing the tour, if we fail to match you, a forced single supplement, which is 85% of the normal single supplement, will apply. Please note this policy cannot be offered for pre and post tour accommodation. 9. Price Guarantee All prices are in Australian dollars based on twin share and subject to change without notice due to increases of airfares, hotel accommodation charges or currency exchange rate fluctuations. However, the tour prices are guaranteed for those who have paid in full, except for any Government/ airport taxes and charges, airline fuel surcharges increase. 10. Visas & Passports A valid national passport is needed for all tours. Please make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from date of entering relevant country, and there is at least two blank pages left in the passport for the visa label. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have obtained the relevant visa before leaving Australia. 11. Items not included in the tour price Passports, visas and vaccinations, unscheduled meals and interstate travel from any place to departure city, tips to your tour manager (national guide), tour driver, local city guides; gratuities on cruise ships; laundry, beverages; travel insurance; excess baggage fees and all other items of personal nature. 12. Service inquiries after the tour If after returning from the tour, you wish to inquire about any tour services provided, please ensure that all correspondence relating to those services is received to CBT Holidays (address below), within 30 days of the tour completion date. This will enable CBT Holidays to make a timely investigation. CBT Holidays will not be liable for any claims made 30 days after the tour / service completion. 13. Safety Please be aware that during your participation in tours operated by CBT Holidays, certain risks and dangers may arise beyond our control, including but not limited to, the hazards of travelling in undeveloped areas; travel by boat, train, automobile, aircraft or other means of transportation; the forces of nature, political unrest and accident or illness in remote regions without means of rapid evacuation or medical facilities. CBT Holidays will not have liability regarding provision of medical care or the adequacy of any care that may be rendered. It is understood that CBT Holidays will use its best efforts to ensure that adequate measures are taken. 14.
