10 Day 5: Snowcapped Peaks and Choquequirao Tour by Helicopter Early transfer from your hotel to Cusco Airport to enjoy an approx 2 hour overflight from Cusco. You will appreciate the top of a steep mountain the Inca citadel of Choquequirao, Gold cradle in Quechua, located in the Southeast of Cusco, it is the second most important Inca complex, following Machu Picchu. Built in the last years of the Inca Empire, it was probably a political and administrative seat which then served as a stronghold and refuge during the Inca resistance against the conquistadors. Day 8: Sacred Valley - Spectacular Train Journey to Machu Picchu Departure to the Train Station to board the Hiram Bingham Orient Express Luxury train to reach Machu Picchu, a magical journey never to be forgotten. This archaeological site was hidden for centuries until it came to light in the early 1900s, but it is difficult to describe in words what someone feels when the citadel suddenly appears, like a challenge to the imagination and to engineering, between the mountains that mark the beginning and the end of the Andes and the Amazon basin. 19 This spectacular rail journey runs on the route between historic Cusco and Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The first half of the journey is dominated by spectacular views of the magnificent Andean mountains, towering over the deep valleys. The second half of the journey runs along gentler, rolling Andean plains, where vicuña and alpaca can be seen. Arrival and transfer to hotel. Lake Titicaca was the sacred birthplace of the Inca culture. At 12,556 feet above sea level, it is among the highest lakes in the world. Titicaca saddles the border of Peru and Bolivia making it an excellent junction between these two historic nations. Enjoy tea time and join an excursion rowing through the reeds on the lake near the hotel, where you can observe interesting endemic birds, the striking landscapes of the unique highland geography, its fauna and the totora reeds with their different colours. Day 10: Puno Breakfast, and if you wish, join the morning excursion transfer to the lake port to board a boat to begin your excursion to the floating reed islands of the Uros. The Uros are descendants of one of the most ancient cultural groups of the continent. They live in an archipelago of more than 40 man-made reed islands floating on the lake, a few kilometres away from the lodge-refuge. Learn how locals live by catching fish like pejerreyes and carachis, using boats also made of reeds that are abundant in the National Reserve of Titicaca Lake. The man-made islands are made out of totora reeds, with patience and constant refilling, until they form a thick base called Khili, on top of which they build their rustic huts, also made of the same material. You can also choose Taquile Island. Taquile is considered to be the most interesting island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, located in front of the Chucuito Peninsula. The Taquile people are of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of the region s locals, who are of Aymara origin. They live at 4,000 meters above sea level (13,000 ft). You may get to know their way of life and experiences. As it was formerly a part of the Inca Empire, you may also see some

22 Lima archaeological remains on the island, such as stone quarters, doors, windows and pathways to the peak of its mountain, where you can also view the impressive panorama of Lake Titicaca and the snow covered mountains of Cordillera Real. Due to the thermal effect of the lake on the weather, which provides more oxygen to the atmosphere and brings warmer temperatures, the island enjoys a favourable micro-climate for agriculture, producing crops which don t normally grow at these altitudes. As you walk around the island, you will see local men knitting outdoors some of the finest knitted handicrafts in Peru. After tea time, move onto your next excursion or take pleasure at the magnificent scenery around the highest navigable lake of the world; watch the idyllic sunset.
