It is a city where adventure doesn t stray far from the visitor horse-riding, bike-riding, walks through exuberant natural wonders, taking baths in clear waterfalls. 6 Distrito de Acuruí Itabirito Acuruí District Itabirito Rio das Pedras, nowadays Acuruí, was a settlement on the outskirts of the Estrada Real which linked Vila Real de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Sabará and Vila Rica. Acuruí reserves a wonderful stretch of the Estrada Real for the lovers of a good hike. Museu das Miniaturas Miniatures Museum This museum houses miniatures of beautiful Brazilian constructions that were patiently constructed by the Vilhena brothers. The architectural details impress lattices, doors, columns, arches and facades all molded by hand and, many times, shaped with sewing needles. Cachoeira do Campo was the location of many remarkable facts in the history of Minas: in 1709, the leader of the Emboabas War, Manuel Nunes Viana, is proclaimed governor of Minas; in 1720, Felipe dos Santos, escapee of the Count of Assumar s wrath, upon arriving at the settlement, shouts for the people to fight against the despotism of the Portuguese Court. It was, however, too late since the King s dragoons arrived at the settlement and put him under arrest. It was also in this district that, in March of 1789, the Inconfidência Mineira was revealed and denounced. 10 Parque Estadual do Itacolomi Itacolomi State Park Home of the famous Pico do Itacolomi (Itacolomi Peak) which, in the 17th Century, served as a visual reference for the paulista expeditions that would cultivate the untouched natural areas in search of mineral wealth. For those who don t have much time and/or aren t up to walking long distances, there is the possibility of taking an up to 2km walk to become acquainted with the historic nucleus of the park which is formed by the Casa Bandeirista, headquarters of the former São José do Manso farm, by the Museu do Chá (Tea Museum) and by the Capela São José (São José Chapel). 11 Distrito de Passagem de Mariana Passagem de Mariana District The Passagem de Mariana District is located between Ouro Preto and Mariana. The best attraction of this district is the Passage Mine. The mine was exploited from the second decade of the 18 th Century until the 1980 s. Mina da Passagem Passage Mine It is considered to be the largest gold mine open to visitation in the world. The descent into the underground galleries is done in an uncommon way, via trolley. The mine reaches 315 metres of extension and 120 metres of depth; the temperature remains stable throughout the year oscillating between 17 o C and 20 o C.
