6 COMMUNITY PROFILE The Estero community derives its name from the natural resources for which the area is recognized. Estero means estuary where a river meets the sea. The areas original inhabitants were Southwest Florida s Caloosa Indians. These early residents were stewards of the land and fierce warriors. The 16 th century brought the Spaniards, Ponce de Leon among them, changing forever the way of life for the Caloosa. By the middle of the 18th century, through a combination of war, disease and dissemination, the Caloosa Indians were gone. The Estero area remained a forgotten part of Florida until the late 19 th century, when Gustave Damkohler, the first settler to officially register a homestead along the Estero River, arrived. The original settlers relied heavily on the river for their survival. They farmed its banks, fished its waters and used it as a main source of transportation. The area, now known as Estero, remained the same until the arrival of the first roadway and railway, in the early 20th century. The increased accessibility afforded the area an opportunity to grow and prosper. The Estero community, commonly recognized as a great canoeing and fishing destination, has experienced dynamic growth. Even so, the community has been very careful to conserve the natural beauty of the waterways, beach areas and wilderness that gave it this notoriety. The land, location and the beautiful confluence of surf, sand and sun continues to attract travelers, fishermen, new businesses and new full-time residents. The once small farming and fishing village has become a forward thinking community while retaining the beauty and essence of its natural landscape that attracted its original settlers.
