7 3. BOLIVIA ABOUT BOLIVIA Bolivia (/bə lɪviə/ (About this sound listen); Spanish: [bo liβja]; Guarani: Mborivia [ bo ɾiʋja]; Quechua: Buliwya [bʊlɪwja]; Aymara: Wuliwya [wʊlɪwja]), officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Spanish: Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia),[8][9] is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. The capital is Sucre while the seat of government is located in La Paz. The largest city and principal economic and financial center is Santa Cruz de la Sierra, located on the Llanos Orientales (Tropical lowlands) a mostly flat region in the East of Bolivia. More information: [+] Source: Wikipedia ABOUT SUCRE Sucre (Spanish: [ sukɾe]) is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, the capital of the Chuquisaca Department, and the 6th most populated city in Bolivia. Located in the southcentral part of the country, Sucre lies at an elevation of 2,810 meters (9,214 feet). This relatively high altitude gives the city a cool temperate climate year-round. On November 30, 1538, Sucre was founded under the name Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo (City of Silver of New Toledo) by Pedro Anzures, Marqués de Campo Redondo. In 1559, the Spanish King Philip II established the Audiencia de Charcas in La Plata with authority over an area which covers what is now Paraguay, southeastern Peru, Northern Chile and Argentina, and much of Bolivia. The Audiencia de Charcas was a subdivision of the Viceroyalty of Peru until 1776, when it was transferred to the newly created Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. In 1601 the Recoleta Monastery was founded by the Franciscans and in 1609 an archbishopric was founded in the city. In 1624 St Francis Xavier University of Chuquisaca was founded. 8 Electric current Most of Bolivia uses volt outlets so you can use electrical/electronic devices brought from home if the standard voltage in your country is between 220V and 240V. Be aware that some older buildings in La Paz still use 110 volt outlets so make sure to doublecheck before using your device. To check whether your device is compatible or not, check the label of your appliance. In the case of a laptop or phone, check the small box attached to the charger plug. If it states INPUT: V, 50/60 Hz, it is a multi-voltage device and can be used in Bolivia. Dual voltage In Bolivia the power sockets used either accept a flat blade ungrounded plug (Type A) or a two-pronged ungrounded plug (Type C): Weather Sucre s hottest month is September, when max temperature is about 22ºC and min temperature 7 ºC. Currencies and Payment The currency used in Bolivia is the boliviano. One United States Dollar is approximately 6.8 bolivianos, one British Pound approximately 11.3 bolivianos and one euro approximately 9.9 bolivianos. 7
9 BOLIVIANO COINS Boliviano bills come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200. Boliviano coins consist of 1, 2 and 5 bolivianos and 10, 20, and 50 centavos (cents in English). The currency symbol is $b and the currency code is BOB. MONEY EXCHANGE & ATMS Money exchange houses ( cambios in Spanish) are in most locations, often in abundance. Exchanging dollars, pounds or Euros into bolivianos should never be a problem. In smaller towns you may have to go into one of these and change your 100 boliviano notes given by the ATM into smaller bills (20 or 10 denomination bank notes) as local shop owners rarely have change ( suelto in Spanish). ATMs are in all cities and most large towns but not all. As an example, even the popular tourist destination Tupiza does not have an International LINK ATM. Travellers have to go into a bank and withdraw using their debit or credit card. There is a limit of 300 USD per ATM transaction. This is for your safety, to prevent thieves from being able to extort large amounts of cash easily. CREDIT CARDS Only upscale establishments (restaurants, hotels) will accept credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Diners, etc. Cash is most often used when making a purchase and if you ask if a shop or store accepts credit cards they will most likely direct you to an ATM where you can go get some Eating Hours Most Bolivians start the day with a small breakfast or just a hot beverage like coffee or tea to get them started. If they do eat it tends to be a small pastry or cereal and when they eat depends on when they have to start their day. This is usually eaten in the home, but as coffee shops and bakeries are opening up, especially in large cities, breakfast is more commonly taken on the way to work among a small minority. Due to the small breakfast many people snack throughout the day and this begins at about 10:30; often times the people have a saltena at this time, which is a type of empanada. This tends to be a break that remains at work or in the home, depending on the day of the week. 8
10 Lunch, known in Bolivia as almuerzo, is usually the largest and most important meal of the day. Most places close at about noon so workers can go home, eat and perhaps take a short nap (or siesta) prior to returning to work at about 3:00 pm. During this meal soup is common as are many of the staple foods in Bolivia: rice, potatoes, beans, and a meat. Dessert is also commonly served with lunch. In the larger cities, like La Paz, fewer people are going home during the lunch break, but even here a long lunch is still very common. Shortly after their siesta and return to work, a tea break is commonly taken at about 4:00-5:00 pm. Like breakfast this is usually served with a pastry and many times tea is replaced by coffee or mate. Again this usually takes place in the workplace or home, but there are a growing number of coffee houses serving people at this time. Dinner, or cena, is usually late and tends to be much smaller than lunch. This meal is usually eaten at 8:00-9:00 pm. Dinner is typically served in the home with family, but can also be a good time to have a large gathering to celebrate or for a business meal. If this meal is at home with family the amount of food served tends to remain small in comparison to lunch, but for large gatherings and business dinners it tends to take place in a restaurant and the amount of food will likely surpass that of lunch. 4.
