Exploring the Dumaresq River The Dumaresq River (dew merrick) lies on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, the continuous line of mountains that flanks the entire east coast of Australia. The river flows westwards, and from being the borderline between Queensland and New South Wales, (thus explaining the squiggly line on the state map) for a while, flows into the MacIntyre River, and eventually, after half a dozen name changes, flows into the South Pacific Ocean as the River Murray, in South Australia. With its watershed being the western slopes of the ranges, the river receives very little rain. The river has dams, and weirs, and what was once a series of separate waterholes joined only after rain, now has a more permanent existence. Still, with the long lasting drought Southern Queensland has experienced, the flow of water out of the waterhole at Lee s Reserve across the sandstone bar, prior to last summer s rains, could have been covered by a ten cent coin. The ground was bare of grass, dry and dusty. view from the road, Stanthorpe to Glenlyon Dam Road A major north south highway, the New England Highway, lies to the east, and another, the Newell Highway, to the west. Unless you have business with the river, or the tiny towns along it, you will have stayed clear of its one lane country roads. The Dumaresq River starts 57 kilometers west of Tenterfield, where Pike Creek below Glenlyon Dam, the Severn River, Tenterfield Creek, and The Mole River join together. If you want to approach the river from upstream, you have a choice of the Bruxner Highway running west from Tenterfield, or the small country road from Stanthorpe to Texas, turning off south onto Glenlyon Dam Road. above: Glenlyon Dam left: Glenlyon Dam wall : right: Pike Creek below the dam wall

Exploring the Dumaresq River A couple of kilometres after the Glenlyon Dam Road joins the Bruxner Highway, the Mole River flows into the Dumaresq River from the south. Eight kilometres west on the Bruxner there is a side dirt road to Riverton, and the bridge across the Dumaresq is only one hundred metres off the bituman road. Here you can get your first look at the river. It is 45 kilometres by road (47 by river) to the tiny town of Bonshaw, 8 kilometres more to Bonshaw Weir from the Riverton Crossing. Recommended minimum river height for canoeing, 2.95 m for the Dumaresq River at Bonshaw, 0.79 m at Roseneath. right: The Mole River, view downstream from the Bruxner Highway bridge view upstream from Riverton Bridge view downstream from Riverton Bridge Bonshaw Weir from the road crossing below Bonshaw Weir and camping reserve southern bank

Exploring the Dumaresq River Bonshaw Weir is a stepped weir constructed from steel sheet piling, backfilled with concrete.the weir is 65 metres wide, with an initial drop of approximately 1.6 metres. The water pools upstream for about 5 kilometres, at a depth of 2 to 3 metres. Portage for canoeists is straight forward on the southern bank. Do not run at higher water levels. There are remnants of older construction, immediately downriver from the weir. Camping Reserve is on the southern bank. No facilities. It is a 22km paddle to the Highway Bridge at Texas. Minimum recommended river height 1.95m at Texas, 5.5 m below road. right: Bonshaw Weir, view upstream view downstream from road bridge below Bonshaw Weir view upstream from 1km above Texas Road Bridge view downstream from 1 km above Texas Road Bridge view north towards Texas from the river

Cunningham Weir, Beebo looking upstream from road bridge to weir looking downstream from the weir to the road bridge looking downstream from road bridge, Cunningham Weir Cunningham Weir is 1.5km from Beebo, down Cunningham Weir Road, signposted. Beebo is 31 km from Texas on the Yelarbon Texas Road. River distance from the Texas to the Cunningham Weir is 38 km, 59 kms downstream from Bonshaw Weir. The weir is 48 metres wide, and forms a pool over 6 kilometres upstream, is disused, and is not structurally sound. Between Glenarbon and Keetah Border Crossing is 5 km of dry weather dirt road called the Desert Road. Due to artesian saline water surfacing there, desert soil types and vegetation such as Spinifex, usually found in the far west, can be seen. (photographs left and right.) Middle photograph is a curious wallaby, looking back at the visitor.

Exploring the Dumaresq River Glenarbon Weir looking upstream from Glenarbon Weir Keetah Border Crossing bridge, looking north downstream from Keetah bridge, note obstacles Glenarbon Weir is eleven kilometres downstream from Cunningham Weir, and 57 km upstream from the confluence of the MacIntyre and Dumaresq Rivers. There is no public road access to the weir, as it lies within the Glenarbon Station property. The river pools upstream for about 4 kilometres. The weir is 60 metres wide. Portage is possible either side. Stay well clear in high water. There is a fish ladder in centre stream. Keetah Border Crossing turnoff is 54 km east from Goondiwindi. 59 km west from Texas, 28 from Beebo, and 8km from Yelarbon. It is about 1.6km to the Keetah Border Crossing Bridge, from the Yelarbon Texas Road, signposted. Camping is permitted on the NSW side of the bridge. No public facilities. By river it is 24 km from Glenarbon Weir to the Keetah bridge. Note the old bridge posts and tree trunks below the bridge. Best to have a look before paddling through.

Exploring the Dumaresq River Bengalla Reserve, left track Bengalla Reserve, left track at the river Bengalla Reserve, right track at the river Lees Reserve Bengalla Reserve is 33km east from Goondiwindi on Kildonan Road to the gateway at the camping reserve (signposted) The Reserve is 12.5 km on the Kildonan Road west of Keetah Border Crossing turnoff, and 16 km by river downstream from the Keetah Border Crossing Bridge. There is a dirt track to the river, which is dry weather access only. Camping is permitted, no public facilities. The track in forks left and right. The left track leads down to a grassy flat and sandy beach. The right track ends in a steep bank above the river. Recommend you walk and inpect any wet patches on the road if not in a 4wd. Lees Reserve is 29km east from Goondiwindi. and 78.5 km west from Texas. There is a dirt road down to the river which is dry weather access only. The last 50 metres is a steep 4wd climb back up. Recommend inspect and park above the river if you are not in a 4wd. No public facilities. The rocky bar can be very shallow, and in the photo above was ankle deep.

Lees Reserve, looking upstream from the bar Lees Reserve, last steep track to the river Yellowbank Reserve, track in Yellowbank Reserve, down at the river Yellowbank Reserve is 25km from Goondiwindi on Kildonan Road to the gateway at the camping reserve (signposted), and 3 km west from the Lees Reserve gate. There is a dirt track to the river. Dry weather access only. Camping permitted. No public facilities. Recommend you walk and inpect any wet patches on the road if not in a 4wd. River distance is from Lees Reserve to Yellowbank is 2.5 km.
