With three-night stops in Bellagio, Vicenza, Cremona and Lucca, this relaxed itinerary will enable you to savour each destination and immerse yourself in Italy s rich musical heritage. The first festival takes place on beautiful Lake Como. Inspiring artists, writers and musicians for centuries, Lake Como has a unique musical heritage. Historic venues such as the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and Basilica di San Giacomo in Bellagio are wonderful settings for performances. The magnificent Arena di Verona is the setting for our second festival. Delivering excellent acoustics in one of the world s largest open-air opera theatres, this internationally acclaimed festival has launched the careers of many artists. We then explore the lives and work of Verdi and Monteverdi when we visit Mantua and Parma. Cremona has been an important musical centre since the Renaissance and, it is here, that we enjoy a private recital and explore the Luthier s district to see the art of violin making. Our final stop is in Lucca, the birthplace of Puccini. In later life, Puccini had a deep connection with the charming hamlet of Torre del Lago and, this is the setting for the wonderful Puccini Festival. As you see the sun set on Lake Massaciuccoli before your night of opera, you will understand why Puccini found this setting so inspirational. This new tour is complemented by the culinary delights of the Emilia- Romagna region, the architecture of Palladio s villas and, a visit to the premier wine region of the Veneto. She has a passion for travel and has spent extended periods of time working and travelling in Spain and Italy. Royna holds a B Mus Ed from the Conservatorium of Music, and a Masters of Education from the University of Sydney, where she was awarded a scholarship to study Music Performance Practices. For twenty years, Royna was Director of Music at Abbotsleigh and continues to use her expertise in Music Education for the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and the NSW Association of Independent Schools, where she is currently the Convenor for Music Professional Learning. She has also worked as a session lecturer in Music at UNSW and the University of Sydney. Royna also completed a conducting course with Jerry Nowak, where she expanded her repertoire by conducting school and semi-professional ensembles. She has conducted numerous concerti with some of Sydney s leading musicians, including Clemens Leske, Joshua Tsai and Simon Tedeschi.

3 Performance Program The Italian Summer Music Festival program reflects the diversity and beauty of Italy. You will experience large scale operatic performances in historic venues, private recitals, intimate chamber music, opulent indoor settings and performances in stunning outdoor settings such as the magnificent Arena di Verona. Italian repertoire from Monteverdi to Verdi and Puccini is the essence of this program. BELLAGIO Lake Como and Bellagio Festival Salone Reale in the majestic Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, hosts a number of instrumental concerts for the Lake Como and Bellagio Festival. In addition, Villa Cipressi, Villa Grumello and Villa Monastero, are also beautiful settings for the festival. Other venues include the Basilica di San Giacomo and Lutheran church in Cadenabbia. We will attend two performances as part of this festival. VERONA The Arena di Verona Verdi s Il Trovatore staged in the magnificent Verona Arena, starring Anna Pirozzi, Murat Karahan, Violeta Urmana and Alberto Gazale. VICENZA Private Recital Oblivion Soave Trio An evening of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Chamber Music featuring Elena Bertuzzi Soprano, Ilaria Fantin Archlute, Enrico Milani Violoncello. LUCCA Lucca and Puccini Festival An evening of Puccini s operatic arias in the Church of San Giovanni, Lucca. TORRE DEL LAGO Puccini Festival Puccini s La Bohème performed by the shores of beautiful Lake Massaciuccoli, where Puccini owned a villa and was inspired to write many of his works. Conducted by Martins Ozolins and featuring Francesco Demuro, Micaela Sarah D Alessandro, Nikola Mijailovic, George Andguladze, Daniele Caputo and the The Puccini Festival Orchestra.

4 Detailed itinerary Included meals are shown with the symbols B, L and D. Tour start & finish time The tour starts on Tuesday 23 July at 3.00pm, at Milan s Malpensa airport. The tour ends after breakfast on Sunday 4 August, with a transfer to the airport for those with outbound flights. Tuesday 23 July Bellagio The group assembles at Milan s Malpensa airport in the midafternoon. We travel to Bellagio, spectacularly situated on Lake Como. At 6.00pm your tour leader, Royna McNamara, hosts drinks and canapes in the hotel followed by a light dinner. Overnight Bellagio. Our first stop is beautiful Villa Carlotta, which occupies a superb position on the lake and contains a wonderful museum with masterpieces by Antonio Canova, Adamo Tadolini and Francesco Hayez. We continue along the lake, passing exquisite properties owned by some of the most prominent Italian families, until we reach the 16th century Villa D Este. Here we enjoy a relaxed alfresco lunch overlooking the gardens and the lake. This evening we attend our first concert as part of the Bellagio and Lake Como Festival. The program for this festival generally comprises vocal and instrumental recitals or chamber and choir concerts. Overnight Bellagio (B, L) Festival: Lake Como and Bellagio Festival Program: To be announced May 2019 Performers: To be announced May 2019 Thursday 25 July The artists lake The lake with its light and reflections has fascinated and inspired artists, writers and musicians for centuries. Franz Liszt, came to Lake Como in September 1837 and, in a letter written in the first month said, I know of no other place that is so manifestly blessed. Like Ravello, Pesaro, and Cremona, Lake Como has a unique musical heritage. In 2011, on the second centennial of the birth of Franz Liszt, and in the 150th year of the Unification of Italy, the first edition of the Bellagio Festival was born. Today, more than forty venues in the provinces of Como and Lecco have opened their doors to the Bellagio and Lake Como Festival and, the festival has rapidly gained recognition internationally.

5 This morning we visit the gardens of Villa Melzi and in the evening we attend the second performance of the festival. Overnight Bellagio (B) Festival: Lake Como and Bellagio Festival Program: To be announced May 2019 Performers: To be announced May 2019 Friday 26 July Opera under the stars in Verona We depart Lake Como and travel by coach to our countryside hotel, the Relais Michelangelo, about 5km from the centre of historic Vicenza. The afternoon is free to relax, swim and enjoy the wonderful grounds of the hotel. In the early evening we have a pre-performance talk by Royna in the hotel. We then travel by coach to Verona to enjoy an aperitif before we experience opera under the stars in the magnificent arena. Arena di Verona was built in 1st century AD, but the modern renaissance of the arena commenced in 1913 with the first performance of Aida. Every summer the arena is transformed into one of the world s largest open-air opera theatres. The arena seats 20,000 and delivers excellent acoustics. Internationally acclaimed, the festival has helped to launch the careers of many artists. Maria Callas was an important figure in Verona between 1947 and She created a sensation when she first performed in Ponichielli s La Gioconda. Overnight Vicenza (B, L) Festival: Arena di Verona Opera Festival Program: Verdi, Il Trovatore Performers: Anna Pirozzi (Leonora), Murat Karahan (Manrico), Violeta Urmana (Azucena), Alberto Gazale (Il Conte de Luna) Saturday 27 July Palladio s Vicenza Vicenza is synonymous with Palladio. Scattered in the Veneto, the Palladian Villas are the legacy of this Renaissance master s architectural genius. Today, we take a guided walking tour of Vicenza. We begin with Palladio s Teatro Olimpico and continue by looking at the palaces and buildings he designed in Vicenza. We take a break for lunch before we visit the best known of his suburban villas - the Villa Capra La Rotonda. After dinner in the hotel, we enjoy a private recital. Our first stop is Bassano del

6 Grappa, where we enjoy a spectacular view of the Brenta river from Palladio s ponte degli alpini, the iconic bridge which spans the river. As we head to Valdobbiadene for lunch in a local winery, we pass through a series of valleys along the Piave River. Our final stop is the village of Follina which is anchored by the stunning Santa Maria Cistercian Abbey and, nearby is the 400-year-old Gregoletto Winery. Overnight Vicenza (B, L) Above: Bassano and the Ponte degli Alpini Below: The violin museum, Cremona; and Sausages, hams and cheese are just some of the delicacies in the great gastronomic region of Emilia Monday 29 July Monteverdi in Mantua Monteverdi became the court musician to Vicenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua from and it was in Mantua that his first opera Orfeo was performed in This was quickly followed by Ariannna in Monteverdi s genius for polyphonic choral writing was then channelled into operas for the stage and, his expansive instrumental writing revolutionized orchestral techniques. Our stop in Mantua focuses on the places Monteverdi s works were performed, including the church of Santa Barbara and the Palazzo del Te, adorned with frescoes by Giulio Romano. We continue to Cremona, our base for the next three nights. Dinner and overnight in Cremona (B, D) Tuesday 30 July The home of the Stradivarius An important musical centre since the Renaissance, Cremona was recognised as the centre of musical instrument making in the 16th century with the violins of the Amati family. Stradivarius was taught by Andrea Amati and is regarded as perfecting the craft of violin making. This morning we embark on a musical guided walking tour of Cremona. We explore the Luthier s district to see the art of violin making in a private workshop, visit the Violin Museum and attend a private recital. This afternoon is at leisure; however, you may continue your musical journey by visiting the Accademia Cremonese. Evening concert. Overnight in Cremona (B) Venue: Museo del violino, Cremona Program: Private violin recital Performers: To be announced May 2019 Wednesday 31 July Antica Corta and Verdi s homeland In the medieval village of Polesine Parmense and overlooking the River Po, is Antica Corta, the embodiment of contemporary Emilia-Romagna cuisine. Located in a fortified castle since the early 14th century, Antica Corta features a Michelin starred restaurant. During out stay we tour the Culatello and Masalen Museum in this 14th century complex. Enroute to Antica Corta we explore Verdi s homeland. We begin with his birthplace at Le Roncole, visit the tiny Teatro Verdi in Busseto and his villa in Sant Agata. Overnight in Cremona (B, L)

7 Thursday 1 August Parma, Music, art and Theatre Rich in history, art and culture, Parma has been shaped throughout the centuries by great artists such as Antelami, Correggio and Parmigianino. Conductor Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma and, Verdi s contribution to the musical life of the city is recognised each year with the Verdi Festival. Our morning visit includes the fine Romanesque cathedral and baptistery and the magnificent Teatro Farnese, built by Giovanni Battista Aleotti in We then cross the Apennines to Tuscany, our final leg of the tour. On arrival in Lucca, there may be an opportunity to attend an optional concert as part of the Puccini and Lucca Festival. Overnight Lucca (B) Friday 2 August Puccini s Lucca Puccini lived in Lucca for the first twenty-two years of his life and today we follow his footsteps on our guided tour of Lucca. We visit the Puccini Museum where he was born, the church of San Paolina where he worked as an organist and, where on July 12, 1881 Messa, his first composition was performed. We also take in the Roman origins of Lucca, so clearly seen in the Piazza dell Anfiteatro, as well as the many fine monuments associated with the medieval age of pilgrimage, most notably the cathedral of San Martino. The afternoon is at leisure. You may wish to stroll along the magnificent city walls which offer some of the best views of the town s Medieval and Renaissance architecture or, climb the 130 stairs to the top of the 14th century Guinigi Tower for a more expansive view of the city. Evening concert. Overnight in Lucca (B) Festival: Lucca and Puccini Festival Program: Puccini, Operatic Arias Performers: To be announced Saturday 3 August Puccini by the lake Puccini had an immediate and deep connection with the charming hamlet of Torre del Lago. As you sit in the open-air theatre which faces picturesque Lake Massaciuccoli, savour the view which Puccini found so inspirational. The Puccini Festival grew out Puccini s desire to hear his music performed in the outdoors and, six years after his death in 1930, the inaugural Puccini Festival was born. We prepare for this evening s opera with a pre-performance talk. In the late afternoon, we travel by coach to Torre del Lago to visit the Puccini Museum and enjoy a light dinner before our opera performance on the shores of Lago di Massaciuccoli. 9 Tour Price The tour price is $9,050 per person, twin share (land content only). The supplement for a single room is $1,930 per person. A non-refundable deposit of $500 per person is required to secure a place on the tour. Second deposit Once the full and final performance program is released in early 2019, you will be asked to pay a second deposit of $1,500 per person to cover the cost of tickets. At this point you will have a 14-day period to withdraw from the tour with a full refund of all monies paid (including initial deposit) if you do not find the range and standard of performances satisfactory. To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Academy Travel s tours tend to feature extended walking tours and site visits, which require greater fitness than coach touring. Participation criteria for this tour This Grade Two tour is designed for people who lead active lives and can comfortably participate in up to five hours of physical activity per day on most days, including longer walking tours, challenging archaeological sites, climbing stairs, embarking and disembarking trains and/or boats, and a more demanding tour schedule with one-night stops or several internal flights. You should be able to: keep up with the group at all times walk for 4-5 kilometres at a moderate pace with only short breaks stand for a reasonable length of time in galleries and museums tolerate uncomfortable climatic conditions such as cold, humidity and heat walk up and down slopes negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable get on and off a large coach with steep stairs, train or boat unassisted, possibly with luggage move your luggage a short distance if required A note for older travellers If you are more than 80 years old, or have restricted mobility, it is highly likely that you will find this itinerary challenging. You will have to miss several activities and will not get the full value of the tour.
