Tour Leaders give an introduction to the tour including a brief overview of Cambodian culture and the country, its people and language. We will learn some useful words and phrases in Khmer whilst getting to know each other. 2 Morning Walk into history exploring the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat Angkor Wat, meaning City Temple, is a temple complex described as the prime example of the classical style of Khmer architecture. It was built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs and the numerous guardian spirits adorning its walls. As the epitome of the high classical style of Khmer architecture, the temple has become a symbol of Cambodia. It appears on the national flag and is the country's prime attraction for visitors. According to Maurice Glaize, a mid-20th-century conservator of Angkor, the temple "attains a classic perfection by the restrained monumentality of its finely balanced elements and the precise arrangement of its proportions. It is a work of power, unity and style." Angkor Wat Temple and Lake The Sugar Palm Restaurant Said to serve the best Amok Fish dish in the country, Sugar Palm is an authentic open air restaurant housed in a traditional wooden house. After lunch we take a Brief Orientation Bus Tour T of Siem Reap and the shopping area. 3 Friday 5 th November 2010 Siem Reap Yoga is available at the resort Mor ning Tour of Angkor Thom with Elephant ride around Bayon Temple Angkor Thom, meaning "Great City", covers an area of 9 km² and was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII as the capital of his empire and the centre of his massive building program. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north. Elephant ride at Bayon Temple The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and massive stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple is known also for two impressive sets of bas-reliefs, which present an unusual combination of mythological, historical and everyday scenes. The temple has been described as "the most striking expression of the baroque style" of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat. A pleasant area to see contemporary design and shopping in Siem Reap including the fashion and textile design of Eric Raisina who shows his wares in Paris and New York. Br eakfast Enjoy a picnic br eakfast on the edge of the Lake Mor ning Tour of Ta Prohm, the Jungle Temple Ta Pr ohm or Tomb Raider Temple Often described as the Tomb Raider Temple, Ta Prohm captur es your imagination as you climb thr ough the temple archways to discover the giant roots of trees that have enveloped these ruins for years, giving them a mysterious quality that was captur ed in the movie the Tomb Raider. We r eturn to our hotel to fr eshen up r eady to start our wor kshop over a light lunch. WORKSHOP: Colours of Cambodia We begin creating your per sonal tr avel journals by developing colour palettes and style collages fr om photos and colour swatches provided. You will be encouraged to expr ess your thoughts and feelings about your tr avels in colours and words. We will discuss Cambodian art, ar chitecture, colour, design and styling themes, both ancient and modern. You will learn how to cr eate your Cambodian colours by analysing images and mixing gouache paint. All materials ar e pr ovided, however you may like to bring along your own pencils, pens, scissor s and glue if you wish. 5 Sunday 7 th November 2010 Siem Reap Yoga is available at the resort Mor ning Short Tour of the Killing Fields Memorial The Killing Fields were a number of sites in Cambodia where many people were killed and buried by the Khmer Rouge regime, during its rule by Pol Pot from 1975 to 1979, immediately after the end of the Vietnam War. We visit this memorial for a brief visit to pay respect to the Cambodian people. Visit to the Old Market Of the various traditional markets in the Siem Reap area, the Old Market is the most popular, offering the greatest selection of souvenirs and curios of any of the traditional markets. The surrounding area, at the south end of the Old French Quarter is burgeoning with shops, galleries, restaurants, bars and more.

6 AHA Restaurant An excellent example of stylish contemporary interior design in Siem Reap, AHA (meaning food) offers a superb Khmer Tapas style meal. After lunch we visit the McDermott Gallery nearby. American photographer John McDermott first came to Angkor in 1995 to to witness a total eclipse of the sun. Inspired by the surreal light of the eclipse, he was captivated to create a definitive artistic portrait of the ancient Khmer temples. His photographs are held in private collections worldwide and have been printed in numerous books and publications. AHA Restaurant R ant The Passage Arcade is adjacent to AHA and houses interesting little shops including Poetry an emporium of all things creative owned by two artists, Loven Ramos and Don Protasio and The Garden of Desire, a beautiful boutique jewellery shop owned by a young Khmer artist who trained in Paris. 7 At leisure tour Cruise on Lake Tonle Sap and Floating Village The Tonle Sap Lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world, swelling from 2500 square km to more than 12,000 square km in the wet season. Floating fishing villages dot the semisubmerged forest that line the flood plain rim of the lake, offering an excellent place to see lakeside rural Cambodia life and a unique ecosystem rich with birds and other wildlife. We take a boat trip to see the floating homes and villages who earn their livelihoods from the abundance of freshwater fish directly under their homes. It was started by Tania Palmer, an Australian in The Project provides shelter, care and stability, education, positive role models, micro businesses, family support, nutrition packs, medical treatment, a loving safe environment and the opportunity to play and belong through a variety of programs. Buddhist meditation encompasses a variety of ancient techniques that develop mindfulness, concentration, tranquillity, and insight.
