The hotel is named after Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, an outstanding figure in 19th century Estonian National Awakening Period and the author of epic poem, "Kalevipoeg". From January 1819 to December 1820, Baron von Stackelberg provided young Kreutzwald lodgings in his own house, free of charge while he studied in the district.
