Discover the rich heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland during this fortnight with a fascinating range of events, talks and guided tours from some of the county s archaeological experts. Launch Event LEICESTERSHIRE ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY DAY AT THE UNI Saturday 4th July: 11am 4pm O2 Academy, University of Leicester, University Road, Leicester LE1 7RH An event for all organised by the University of Leicester with the opportunity to meet participating Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and wider archaeological and historical groups previewing their festival activities. FREE. deb@leicester.ac.uk Before the Festival BRADGATE PARK EXCAVATION OPEN DAY Saturday 27th June: 11am 4pm Bradgate Park, Newtown Linford car park, LE6 0HB Visit the University excavations close to Bradgate House as the first year of a projected five year programme of investigation of the history of the Park gets under way. Guided tours of the excavations and Bradgate House throughout the day along with many activities for the family, including demonstrations, archaeological material to handle and re-enactors. FREE. Car parking 3.00 (all day) LATEST DISCOVERIES AT STONHENGE USING LIDAR Tuesday 7th July: 7pm 9.30pm The United Reformed Church, The Borough, Hinckley, LE10 1NL Paul Garwood, Senior Lecturer in Prehistory at Birmingham University will present a fascinating illustrated talk on new features found around Stonehenge. LIDAR, (Light, Distance And Ranging) is a powerful surveying technique that highlights past landscapes beneath woodland and vegetation without the need for excavation. Join the Friends of Grace Dieu on an information day and learn the results of the hydrological survey and excavations carried out on Grace Dieu Priory s medieval nunnery fishponds and ongoing archaeology on the site. 2 THE GREENS OF GREAT BOWDEN Sunday 19th July: 9.30am 5pm Church Green and Village Hall, Great Bowden, Leics., LE16 7ET The historic village of Great Bowden is characterised by a series of greens with settlement around them. Last year s programme of test pits culminated in a dig open to public view on Stocks Green. This year, weather permitting, Great Bowden Heritage & Archaeology will test pit and metal detect Church Green. View from 9.30 a.m. Finds from both digs can be inspected in the nearby Village Hall from 2 p.m. including an array of coins dropped over the centuries, and a display illustrating the part greens have played in village life. LUTTERWORTH LOCAL HISTORY EXHIBITION Saturday 25th July: 1pm-4.30pm Lutterworth Town Hall, High Street, Lutterworth, LE17 4EH An exhibition exploring the history of this market town from the medieval period tothe present day. Topics include Lutterworth s churches and chapels, school, pubs, early apprenticeships and shopping in the 16th and early 20th centuries. Part of the Leicestershire Victoria County History project. This walk will visit the ruined Church at Dishley where Robert Bakewell was buried and some of the sites of the original Grange. Pre-booking essential by phoning Ernie Miller on MARKFIELD VILLAGE WALK Tuesday 14th July: pm Meet outside St Michael s church on The Green, Markfield, LE67 9WD This is a walk that takes us back through the geological and social history of Markfield. It will cover typical village life in the nineteenth and early twentieth century and how this was influenced by the geology, communications and landscape. Walkers will be able to see Page 2

3 the recent success of turning the legacy of old quarry workings into a public amenity and nature reserve. The walk over Markfield Hill provides splendid views of Charnwood Forest and several neighbouring counties. There is some rough terrain and steep tracks. People are advised to use suitable footwear. FREE, or A WALK AROUND HISTORIC LEICESTER Wednesday 15th July: 2-4pm Meet at Jewry Wall Museum, St Nicholas Circle, Leicester, LE1 4LB. Join archaeologist Peter Liddle for a walk round the historic core of Leicester looking at the remains of Roman and Medieval Leicester, including Leicester Castle. There will not be time to enter most of the buildings en route. Adults: 3; Children FREE. No booking required. Glenfield Tunnel, Glenfield, LE3 8BQ Join the Leicestershire Industrial History Society for a trip into one of the world s first long railway tunnels built in 1832 by the Stephensons as part of the Leicester to Swannington Railway and disused since Numbers are strictly limited and must be prebooked. Older children only and must be accompanied, mornings only. The tunnel is obviously dark & can be cold with some rough conditions underfoot but generally dry. Head covering recommended. No car parking, toilets or medical facilities on site. Visits start at a pre-arranged location in Glenfield village centre & involve a 3/4 mile walk along the old railway trackbed, through a private estate to the tunnel entrance where visitors are signed in and taken into tunnel under instructions from LIHS stewards. NOTE the two morning visits are limited to 100 yard access but the afternoon trips, IF CONDITIONS ALLOW, will take enthusiastic visitors 400 yards inside to the first large air shaft. Also walk around the newly cleared banks of the Iron Age hillfort. No booking required. See areas where Stone Age man knapped flints for hunting animals and making flint scrapers and blades to prepare their food. 2 per person and suitable for children over the age of 12 accompanied by an adult. Take the minor road immediately before the modern bridge over the Trent and continue past the Old Crown down a steep slope which leads you to the car park. This place has a rich history dating back to medieval times. It has witnessed a Civil war battle, riots, plundering of its warehouse perhaps even smuggling! Archaeology abounds. The site is also being actively conserved by our host organisation The Swannington Heritage Trust at their Hough Mill site, adjacent to the Swannington end of the Leics & Swannington 1832 Railway, one of the world s first steam railways. The Trust will be opening the part restored Wind Mill and the other early coal extraction areas on the same site at the same time. Car parking on site. Foxton Inclined Plane Trust, The Boilerhouse, Middle Lock, Gumley Road, Foxton, LE16 7RA Starting from The Boilerhouse the walk will take about one and half hours and will explore hidden Foxton covering places and information which visitors usually miss. We recommend that walkers download and then upgrade (for 3.99) the Foxton Discovery app from the website beforehand including a voucher for access to The Boiler Room for 3 months. Talks and Presentations Bosworth Roman Temple Tuesday 14th July: 7.30pm, Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre Heritage Room, Sutton Cheney CV13 0AD Wendy Scott will tell you about the discovery of a Roman temple near the Battlefield visitors centre. Recorded with the help of many volunteers during the survey work to find the battlefield, it s a prime example of how volunteers provided vital assistance to archaeologists in what is a nationally important find Admission: 5 THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE OADBY AND WIGSTON AREA Thursday 16th July: 2pm 4pm Brock s Hill Visitor Centre, Washbrook Lane, Oadby, LE2 5JJ Peter Liddle, of Leicestershire Fieldworkers, will explain in an illustrated talk what we know of the archaeology of the Oadby and Wigston area. There are Bronze Age burials, Roman farms and perhaps a Roman temple, Anglo-Saxon cemeteries and medieval villages amongst what has been found there. There will be the chance to handle some finds and meet members of the new Oadby and Wigston Fieldwork Group per person 2.50 for Friends of Brock s Hill MEDIEVAL CARVINGS IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND Friday 17th July: pm St. Peter s Church, Tilton on the Hill, Leicestershire, LE7 9LB Bob Trubshaw, the organiser of the innovative Project Gargoyle which is recording all of Leicestershire and Rutland s medieval church sculpture, will show how the results of the Project shed light on the motifs and their meanings. Call or www. bosworthbattlefield.com THE BUILDING OF KIRBY MUXLOE CASTLE Tuesday 21st July: pm Desford Free Church, Chapel Lane, Desford, LE9 9GE Come along to a talk by archaeologist, Peter Liddle, on the building of Kirby Muxloe Castle one of the major structures built in Leicestershire during the Wars of the Roses for Edward IV s chamberlain William Lord Hastings. It will use the contemporary building accounts and the existing ruins and finds to tell the story of a medieval building project. A Desford and District Local History Society event. FREE to members. Snibston Discovery Museum, Ashby Road Coalville, LE67 3LN The existence of the town of Coalville owes much to William Stenson and George Stephenson who both sank collieries in Whitwick Parish between 1828 and This talk will focus on Stenson and Stephenson and the developments they brought about which led to the formation of the embryonic town of Coalville. The park has links with the Knights Hospitallers, with Roman and pre-roman finds having been uncovered and also features from the Victorian sewage works still visible.
