14 OVERVIEW I AREA DETAILS Nestled between mountain Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf The town of Kalamata, built on the ruins of the Homeric city of Pharae, traces its history back to 2,600 BC. Nestled between mountain Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf, the town is known today for its charm and liveliness and its beautiful 4-km long shore EU blue flag awarded. The figs, raisins, honey bars, olives and olive oil of Kalamata are world-renowned. Kalamata's historic course from a Mycenaean city to Byzantium, under the rule of the Franks, the Venetians and the Turks offers the visitor a wide variety of historical monuments and attractions. The convent of Saints Constantine and Helen, the Frankish Castle of Princess Isabeau, the Nunnery, the 10th century church of the Holy Apostles, the old mansions still standing in many parts of the town, the Benakion archeological Museum and the Folklore Museum should be included in every itinerary. Kardamili One of the prettiest traditional villages in the Peloponnese with several Maniate towers in great condition, ruins of the medieval castle and the nearby Dyros Gorge Caves with its wild beauty featuring amazing stalactites and stalagmites.
