1 Warm Up in your passport Ms. Schneider s Class: Ms. Schneider believes that students should help to make the classroom rules. The class votes on such rules as whether they can chew gum in class, eat in class, leave their seats whenever they want, speak without raising their hands, and wear hats in class. Students also vote on the punishments for breaking any rules. Ms. Kobe s Class: Ms. Kobe sets the rules for the class. The rules are very strict. Students may not chew gum or eat in class. They cannot leave their seats unless they raise their hands and ask permission. No hats are allowed. Students may not talk when Ms. Kobe is giving a lesson. Ms. Kobe also has strict punishments. If a student breaks any rule, she or he must spend one hour after school cleaning the classroom. Write 3-4 sentences where you choose one teacher to have for the year. Athens Depends on farming To get more land they take over their neighbors (Helots) and noncitizens produce any goods needed No trade b/c of Xenophobia No coins- iron bars = keep from trading Depended on trade Land not good for farming so they rely on the sea and their good harbor Trade with places such as Egypt and Italy Olive oil, honey, pottery, etc. Agora = Marketplace were bought and sold here too Coins were made out of precious metals and had symbols on them

Athens Philosophy Protect the City Both girls & boys were taught how to fight Unhealthy babies are left to die on a hill Boys: At 7 they go to camp and learn how to steal, fight, and be tough At 20 took a test to see if they were good warriors They live in barracks until 30 years old Philosophy Be a good citizen Book learning and physical education Until 6 they are taught at home Until 14 they go to school reading, writing, math, literature, sports, singing, and playing instruments 18 years old they start their military training Girls learned how to read, write, cook, clean, make clothing, songs, and dances Some rich women had a better education
