1 NOTE : This feature is a completed version of Le Trait d'union article, including the post-war career of the plane in France. Eisenhower Criquet MS500 Number 23 (ex-fieseler Storch) By Stephen J. Hoffman, Ph.D. As an amateur historian and pilot with a particular interest in World War II, I have been interested in the Fieseler Storch for many years. As a pilot, this aircraft looked like something that I would enjoy flying. For the past ten years I have been restoring one of these aircraft, a Morane-Saulnier MS.500. Because there were no log books or other records with this Morane, I began researching this aircraft type. During this research I became curious about the story behind a photograph of General Dwight Eisenhower standing in front of what appeared to be a Fieseler Storch painted in U.S. Army Air Force colors. This brief article explains what I was able to learn. During several years of occupation, the French aircraft company Morane-Saulnier, had been building the Fieseler Fi- 156 Storch for the Luftwaffe at its Puteaux factory just west of Paris. Morane-Saulnier owned a private airfield at Villacoublay, near Versailles, where major components of these aircraft were assembled and test flights were performed. At the beginning of August 1944 Allied military forces finally broke out of their Normandy beachhead and made rapid progress to the east. By the end of August Paris has been liberated. After the liberation of Paris, Morane-Saulnier continued to build the Fi-156, now designated as the Morane-Saulnier MS.500 Criquet, for the French Air Force. During the remainder of WWII many of these MS.500 aircraft made their first flight for the French Air force at the Issy-les-Moulineaux airfield just south of the Eiffel Tower. On 14 October 1944 the French Air Ministry contacted (British) Air Commodore Arthur Forbes, the Deputy Chief of the Air Division, SHAEF Mission (France), with an offer to present a Storch to both General Eisenhower and Eisenhower s SHAEF deputy, Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder. Forbes recommends that the gift be accepted (see attachment 1). On 6 November 1944 French Air Force General René Bouscat sent a letter to General Eisenhower formally offering Morane 500 number 23 (i.e. a Morane-Saulnier MS.500 Criquet). The letter mentioned the Issy-les-Moulineaux airfield as the location where Eisenhower s pilot could collect the Morane MS.500 (see attachment 2). Morane records indicate that MS.500 number 23 was delivered from the Morane-Saulnier factory at Puteaux to the Villacoublay airfield for final assembly on 13 October MS.500 number 23 was delivered with Argus engine number and propeller number The Morane factory test flight occurred on 20 October 1944 by Mr. Storm and was delivered to the French Air Force on the same day (personal communication, A. Wadsworth).
2 On 10 November 1944 General Eisenhower sent a reply to General Bouscat accepting the Morane MS.500 (see attachment 3). Major Laurence Hansen, one of General Eisenhower s pilots, mentioned collecting the Morane MS.500 at Le Bourget airfield only to return it to Le Bourget several days later for a presentation ceremony (see attachment 4). General Eisenhower s diary entry for Wednesday 22 November 1944 mentioned the French presenting him with a small ship (see attachment 5). A U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer captured two photographs of the MS.500 presentation ceremony (see attachments 6 and 8). Both photograph captions indicate that the location and date of this event was Paris, France, 11/22/44 (see attachments 7 and 9). At some later time in 1945 or 1946 Morane MS.500 number 23 was returned by General Eisenhower to the French Air Force. Sometime in 1946 the MS.500 was written off as a French Air Force aircraft but (apparently) remained in storage [at l'entrepôt de l'armée de l'air n 602 (Air Force Warehouse #602 located at Romorantin, France)] (The remaining description of activities by Morane MS.500 number 23 are based on an article by Jacques Chillon in Le Trait d Union number 234 [Juillet-Aout 2007] on page 13.) On 9 June 1946 Morane MS.500 number 23 was assigned to the Aero-Club de Sologne (Romorantin, France) [but remains in place (at the Air Force Warehouse 602)]. It was rebuilt in the 3rd quarter of 1949 by the club [or possible at l'entrepôt de l'armée de l'air n 602 on behalf of the Aero-Club]. This Morane was assigned the civilian registration F-BEJN. On 6 October 1950 Morane MS.500 number 23 was the subject of a Visite de Classification at Romorantin [and receives its airworthiness certificate]. On 9 April 1955 Morane MS.500 number 23 was in an accident at Romorantin. It was repaired and returned to service on 9 September Between 25 November 1964 and 29 April 1965 Morane MS.500 number 23 goes through a Révision Générale [a process in which the aircraft is totally disassembled (or following an equivalent process from the aircraft s maintenance manual if such a process exists) to inspect any important parts not accessible during periodic/annual overhauls] and was modified to an MS.505 configuration (the 20th Morane to be converted) by Reims Aviation. On 6 May 1965 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was delivered to the Aero-Club de l'est in Nancy France. During September 1968 this aircraft was transferred to l Espoir Aéronautique de Sarreguemines [a private flying club, located in Sarreguemines France and dating from 1929, the club flies both gliders and powered aircraft]. In 1969 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was assigned to Centre Interclub Vélivole Vosges Alsace (CICVVA) in Colmar France. It was then assigned on 10 February 1970 to l Aéro-Club de Valence (Valencia Aero Club) in Valencia France. It was transferred on 10 April 1971 to the l Aéro-Club Charentais (Charentais Aero Club) in Rochefort France. The Certificate of Airworthiness for Morane MS.505 number 23/20 expired for the last time in October 1975 (pending a Révision Générale) and it was written off.
3 In July 1979 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was turned over to Domaines for disposal. [Domaines is a national service of the French Ministry of Budget, Public Accounts and the Civil Service. Part of its mission is to evaluate and sell the property, movable and immovable, belonging to public or private entities which they have decided to transfer/sell.] On 18 November 1990 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was transferred by the Direction générale de l'aviation civile (DGAC) to l ASAA (J.M. Saubois) at Marmande France and it was reinstated [that is, reversing the action to write off this aircraft]. On 24 July 1992 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was the subject of a Visite de Classification at Marmande [and receives its airworthiness certificate] (see attachment 10). On 16 February 1999 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was transferred by the DGAC to Robert Harte and Jean Prioleau in Marmande France. On 24 February 2003 Morane MS.505 number 23/20 was transferred by the DGAC to Bernard Trible in Lyon France. The registration is changed to F-AZTB. This aircraft is still being flown in France. **** Background Steve Hoffman is an aerospace engineer working under contract to NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston Texas. He flies a Cessna 140 and is restoring Morane MS.500 number 04 at the La Porte Municipal Airport near Houston. He would like to acknowledge and thank several people who helped with this article. First is Mister Richard Bateson of London, England, for locating and obtaining copies of correspondence from the British National Archives. Second is Mister Alain Wadsworth of La Ferrière, France, who researched Morane-Saulnier records to locate information related to Morane MS.500 number 23. And finally Mister Jean-Pierre Dubois of Nice, France, who translated this article into French and who has been a great help in researching the history of Morane MS.500 number 04. ****

However when taken over by the French, it was called a Morainne [sic] 500. I was driven from our airfield at Versailles for a French ceremony to present this airplane to the General at Le Bourget.. Due to a bureaucratic mixup, I had to return the plane to Le Bourget for the presentation several days later. It was an experience to fly this airplane.
