2 MALTA HELLo EVERY Monday & Friday Discovering Gozo After a twenty minute crossing, on setting foot in Gozo you will note that although both islands are similar in history and development, Gozo has a character entirely of its own. Gozo, which is a three hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta. During this tour you will visit The National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta Pinu which is a Roman Catholic basilica and national shrine located 700 metres from the village of Gharb. The basilica is located in the edge of a cliff in open countryside which allows visitors to enjoy beautiful views of the area. You will then visit Dwejra Bay where you could see until 8th March 2017, a natural arch featuring a table-like rock over the sea. Here, you will also see The Inland Sea & il-gebla tal-general. If weather permits, you can also purchase a short boat ride. A visit to a Crafts Shop is a must. At this shop you will see stone works, marble, traditional food, local lace and many other items. This is the perfect place where you can buy a souvenir which will remind you of Gozo. You will then visit Victoria which is the capital of Gozo. Victoria is the name given in 1897 by the British government on the occasion of Queen Victoria s Diamond Jubilee, at the request of the Bishop of Malta, Mons. Sir Pietro Pace. However Gozitans still often refer to it by its old name, Rabat. The area around Victoria, situated on a hill near the centre of the island has been settled since Neolithic times. In the centre of Victoria lies The Cittadella, a historic fortified city. The Cittadella also called at The Citadel, is on Malta s tentative list of future World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, who describes it as a small fortified town. An old prison is located within the city, as are the Courts of Justice. After this visit you will stop for lunch in a restaurant in Rabat. Finally you will drive to Mgarr Port via Qala Belvedere where breath-taking scenes can be enjoyed. You will then have a short ferry crossing back to Malta and will be dropped-off at your hotel. 3 MALTA HELLo EVERY TUESDAY The Three Cities & Wine Tasting Tour The Three Cities is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea. During the tour you will drive past Cospicua, a double-fortified harbour city and the largest of the three. It was also given a title as Citta Cottonera, but erroneously the title is now used to define the whole region. You will then arrive in Vittoriosa. Vittoriosa is ideally situated for safe anchorage and over time it has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour. The third city Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of The name Senglea was given by the grandmaster who built it, Claude De La Sengle. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During this tour you will walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic churches and buildings. You will then drive to the Marsovin Cellars in Marsa. The wine tasting tour commences with a historical introduction amongst original artefacts, followed by an explanation about the process of how the locally grown grapes are pressed, fermented and eventually transformed into wine. A walk through the 400-year-old Ageing Cellars is an authentic and true piece of Maltese heritage. The wine sampling is held in the Marsovin wine bar, where trained staff guide guests through a wine tasting session to sample different Marsovin wines accompanied by a selection of local savouries like maltese bread and cheese. At the bar one also has the opportunity to purchase local Marsovin wines. 7 MALTA HELLo Gozo with a Difference A visit to Gozo is a must! As soon as you arrive in Gozo you will notice that Gozo is a lot different than Malta. The three hilled island is greener and more picturesque. You will first visit Ggantija, a Neolithic megalithic temple. The Ggantija temples are the earliest of a series of megalithic temples in Malta. The Ggantija temples are older than the pyramids of Egypt. Their makers erected the two Ggantija temples during the Neolithic Age, which makes these temples more than 5550 years old and the world s second oldest manmade religious structures, after Gobekli Tepe. You will then drive to Marsalforn where you will board the trackless train. During the 40 minute ride you pass by Marsalforn Bay, Qbajjar Bay, Xwejni Bay, you will also see the Salt Pans, the Salvatur Statue and more. This area is hardly visited by any tourists since no vehicles are allowed apart from the trackless train, so enjoy this unique experience! You will then visit a Crafts Shop where you will have the chance to taste some traditional Maltese food. Here you will also see stone works, marble, local lace and many other items. This is the perfect place where you can buy a souvenir which will remind you of Gozo. The next stop is Dwejra Bay where until the 8th March 2017 one could see The Azure Window, a natural arch featuring a table-like rock over the sea. At Dwejra Bay there are two famous landmarks - The Inland Sea & Il-Gebla tal-general. Here, you can catch a boat for a short ride (weather permitting). Gozo s Capital City Victoria is the next visit. Victoria is the name given in 1897 by the British government on the occasion of Queen Victoria s Diamond Jubilee, at the request of the Bishop of Malta, Mons. Sir Pietro Pace. In the heart of Victoria lies the Cittadella, formerly known as Il Castello, which has been the centre of activity of the island since possibly Neolithic times, but is known to be first fortified during the Bronze Age. It was later developed by the Phoenicians and continued into becoming a complex Acropolis by Roman times. A late Lunch is served at a restaurant in Rabat. After a tour full of experiences you will have a short ferry crossing back to Malta and will be dropped off at your hotel. 8 Adults Eur 57 Children (5-12 yrs) Eur 37 Children under 5 years To pay the Gozo Ferry Ticket directly at the port includes Full Day Tour to Gozo Gozo Ferry Ticket Ggantija Temples Ticket Trackless Train Ride Late Buffet Lunch EVERY WEDNESDAY Attard 1000 Valletta 1010 Sliema 1020 St. Julian s 1030 St. Paul s Bay 1045 Bugibba 1050 Qawra 1055 Xemxija 1105 Golden Bay 1105 Mellieha 1115 Cirkewwa 1130
8 Every THURSday MALTA HELLo The Tour of Valletta Malta s Capital City! Valletta, Malta s Capital City and a World Heritage site, is nothing short of an open-air museum. Valletta known as Il-Belt, contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. The city is essentially Baroque in character with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected area, though World War II left major scars on the city. The City of Valletta was officially recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in The city is named for Jean Parisot de la Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion in The official name given by the Order of Saint John was Humilissima Civitas Valletta The Most Humble City of Valletta or Citta Umilissima in Italian. The bastions, curtains and ravelins along with the beauty of its Baroque palaces, gardens and churches, led the ruling houses of Europe to give the city its nickname Superbissima Most Proud. During the tour you will walk through the bustling streets and to Barracca Gardens for a breathtaking panorama of the Grand Harbour. You will then visit St. John s Co-Cathedral where you will see the painting The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio, considered one of Caravaggio s masterpieces and the only painting signed by the painter. 9 MALTA HELLo Malta s Scenic Tour visiting Palazzo Parisio, Clapham Junction, Dingli Cliffs & Buskett Gardens Located in the heart of picturesque Naxxar, this 18th Century Palace is a place of wonder that begs to be explored. On your visit you will discover the intricate nuances of Malta s historic nobility and their enchanting way of life. Touring this stately home offers great insight and sparks the imagination whether you find yourself seeking inspiration from the grand Ballroom, the detailed Family Chapel or the fabulous walled Gardens and Orangery. Your next stop is Clapham Junction. Clapham Junction is covered with very puzzling and mysterious groove in the rock. They appear to be ancient roadways of some sort. They do not appear to be directly linked to the building of any of Malta s megalithic and they do cross the small island and seem to be found on the higher and rockier surfaces. There can be many of them in the same area, beside each other. Sometimes they are a solitary pair that can go on for miles. One of the mysteries and frustrations of Malta s ancient and magnificent history is that there are no records left of it by those people. No written word or pictorial guide was left by the Temple Builders and Cart Rut users. You will then drive to The Buskett Gardens, located in the fertile valley of Wied il-luq, Siggiewi. The gardens are at their best in Spring but they offer shade from the harsh mid- Summer sun and offer a quiet place for a walk in the Winter months. Verdala Palace, an official residence of the President of Malta, is located on the edge of the Gardens. A coffee break is also included in this tour where you will taste the delicious and traditional Pastizzi. Your final stop is Dingli Cliffs, located less than a kilometre to the south west of the village of Dingli. The cliffs are 220 metres high and are the highest point in Malta! An isolated chapel makes for a charming landmark. Built in the 17th century, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene offers some of the most beautiful views you can get from these cliffs. From here you can also see the tiny uninhabited islet of Filfla. During this excursion you will tour onboard a Vintage Bus, a bus that is now rare to see on the Maltese Islands. includes 10 Adults Eur 36 Children (5-12 yrs) Eur 26 Half Day Tour to Naxxar, Dingli, Clapham Junction & Buskett Palazzo Parisio Entrance Ticket Delicious Maltese Snack & Coffee EVERY THURSDAY Cirkewwa 0830 Mellieha 0840 Golden Bay 0820 St. Paul s Bay 0900 Bugibba 0905 Qawra 0910 St. Julian s 0910 Sliema 0855 Valletta 0840 Attard 0830
10 EVERY FRIDAY MALTA HELLo The Second World War in Malta & Its British History ( ) This is the only tour available in Malta which is dedicated to Malta s British history. During the tour we will discuss why the British came to Malta, what happened and why they left. The tour will begin in Vittoriosa where we will see the fortifications which date back to the times of the Knights and were later used by the British for their defensive purpose. We will visit the maze like, underground Air Raid shelters and relive the conditions of what has been referred to as the Second Great Siege of Malta. These subterranean bomb shelters were excavated in the solid rock and were extended as the war progressed. After a short walk of Vittoriosa we will drive to Valletta by bus. We will walk to the upper Barrakka Garden which enjoys a spectacular view of the Grand Harbour (the largest natural harbour of the Mediterranean Sea), which was a British military base and the main reason why Malta came under fire as soon as Mussolini declared war on the Allied forces. The declaration of war has already been consigned to the ambassadors of Great Britain and France. Benito Mussolini 1940 A walk around the streets of Valletta will take us by the Palace which was used by Napoleon Bonaparte, the second world war Victory (Soup) Kitchen, Queen Victoria s statue and the ruins of the Royal Opera House which was destroyed at the peak of the bombings in Malta. This is not the end. It is not the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Winston Churchill 1942 After some free time for a lunch break we will walk to the lower level of Valletta to the Malta War Museum. The museum itself is situated at Fort St. Elmo, an original defensive system built by the Knights which also was modified to serve the British military purpose. Among the numerous exhibits are the fuselage of one of the legendary Gloster Gladiators and well as the E-boat (human torpedo). Without Malta the Axis will end by losing control of North Africa. You will visit the streets of the Malta s capital dismissing the current population and moving to past times (not always so distant) and through buildings and corners get to know some of the stories which have laid the foundation of the city, as much as the Order of Saint John and the British Occupation, like the haunted house of Saint Ursula, the ghost of the Co-Cathedral or the spirit of the priest in Republic Street, among others. 12 EVERY SATURDAY MALTA HELLo Prehistoric Temples Tour A Malta Temples Tour is a must for anyone who travels to this beautiful Mediterranean island. Malta and Gozo are home to seven megalithic temples, all of which are designated as world heritage sites by UNESCO. These megalithic temples date back 5500 years ago and are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, even older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids. It is also home to more than thirty other temples, all of which reflect Malta s rich past. You will first drive to Ghar Dalam. Għar Dalam s relevance as a prehistoric site was discovered in the latter half of the 19th Century with a series of excavations unearthing animal bones as well as human remains and artifacts. The Cave is a highly important site for its Palaeontology, archaeology and ecology.the history of the cave and that of the Islands can be decoded from Għar Dalam s stratigraphy. The lowermost layers, more than 500,000 years old, contained the fossil bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotami, micro-mammals and birds among other species. This layer is topped by a pebble layer, and on top of it there is the so-called deer layer, dated to around 18,000 years ago. The top layer, or cultural layer, dates less than 10,000 years and holds evidence of the first humans on the Island. It was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,400 years ago, was discovered. The site consists of a cave, a Victorian style exhibition and a didactic display as well as a garden planted with indigenous plants and trees. You will then visit Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Temples. The megalithic complex of Hagar Qim is located atop a hill on the southern edge of the Island, on a ridge capped in soft globigerina limestone. All exposed rock on the island was deposited during the Oligocene and Miocene periods of geological time. 500 metres from Hagar Qim stands the Mnajdra megalithic temple. The surrounding area is typical of Mediterranean garrigue in its starkness and isolation; it is designated as a Heritage park. A few hundred metres from the temple is one of the thirteen watchtowers built by Grand Master Martin de Redin, called Hamrija Tower. Transport back to all hotels will be provided. 13 MALTA HELLo Rabat, Mdina & San Anton Gardens San Anton Palace is a palace in Attard, which is the official residence of the President of Malta. It was originally built in the early 17th century as a country villa for Antoine de Paule, a knight of the Order of St. John. It was expanded into a palace following de Paule s election as Grand Master in The palace was used as a residence by subsequent Grand Masters, being enlarged a number of times in the process. It was the headquarters of the rebel National Assembly during the uprising of , and it later became a residence for the Civil Commissioners, Governors and Governors-General of Malta. It has been the official residence of the President since the office was created in The palace is surrounded by the extensive San Anton Gardens, parts of which have been open to the public since During this tour we will first visit this Garden and then continue to the next stop which is Rabat. Rabat is a town in the Northern Region of Malta. The name of the town is derived from the Arabic word for suburb as it was the suburb of the old capital Mdina. Rabat is home to the famous Catacombs of St. Paul. These catacombs were used in Roman times to bury the dead as, according to Roman culture, it was unhygienic to bury the dead in the city Mdina and parts of Rabat were built on top of an ancient Roman city. The Maltese Catacombs were never meant to be hiding places during persecutions or as living quarters. The Catacombs of St. Paul are now looked after by Heritage Malta. Part of St. Paul s Catacombs, the part accessible from the Parish church which is dedicated to the same Saint, was where, according to tradition and as recorded in the Bible, St. Paul stayed for three months when he was shipwrecked on the island in 60 A.D. Our next and final stop is Mdina. Mdina also known by its titles Città Vecchia or Città Notabile, is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta, which served as the island s capital from antiquity to the medieval period. The city is still confined within its walls, and has a population of just under 300. The city was founded as Maleth in around the 8th century BC by Phoenician settlers, and was later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina, and it was reduced to its present size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta. During the latter period, the city adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word medina. The city remained the capital of Malta throughout the Middle Ages, until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced a period of decline over the following centuries, although it saw a revival in the early 18th century. At this point, it acquired several Baroque features, although it did not lose its medieval character. Mdina remained the centre of the Maltese nobility and religious authorities, but it never regained its pre importance, giving rise to the popular nickname the Silent City by both locals and visitors. Mdina is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it is now one of the main tourist attractions in Malta. Bird Park Malta homes over 200 species of birds and other animals. Flamingos, pelicans, swans, storks, owls, cranes, parrots and many other amazing birds from around the world thrive happily with kangaroos, wallabies, antilope, meerkats, deer, genets, marmosets and more. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about bird habitat, flight, plumage cycles, displays, song and calls, territory and pair formation, nests and eggs, migration and much more, whilst having the chance to observe and interact with wildlife. You will then visit the Malta National Aquarium which is located in one of Malta s most picturesque promenades. The public aquarium has 26 display tanks with, amongst others, Mediterranean fish, including fish commonly found in the Maltese waters together with replicas of historical artefacts that one can find in the seas around the Maltese islands. The main tank of the aquarium houses species from the Indian Ocean, including eight black tip sharks, horn sharks, rays, eels and other exotic species. The main tank is approximately 12 metres in diameter and has a walk-through tunnel that allows visitors to experience the fish at a much closer range. 17 MALTA HELLo Vintage Bus Tour to Vittoriosa, Cospicua & Senglea Step back through the mists of time as you drive to the fortress of Cottonera which is widely known as the Three Cities, these being Vittoriosa, Cospicua & Senglea. These cities were built and fortified by the Knights of Malta. You first start with an informative drive through Cospicua. Cospicua has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Prior to the 18th Century it was known as Bormla, a name which is still in use. Its fortification walls, constructed to protect the town and its neighbours Vittoriosa & Senglea, were built by the Knights of Malta. Construction began in 1638 but was not completed for another 70 years. In 1722, Grand Master Marc Antonio Zondadari declared Bormla a city and in view of its strong bastions named it Citta Cospicua. You will then visit Vittoriosa, ideally situated for safe anchorage and over time it has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as a capital city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour. Vittoriosa is now a location of several tourist attractions. The historic Vittoriosa Waterfront contains the former Palace of the General of the Galleys and the Order of St. John s treasury. The area was refurbished in the early 2000s and both buildings are used for other activities: the former is now a casino, while the latter is home to the Malta Maritime Museum. A second museum, the Vittoriosa 1565 Museum, is also located in the town and is dedicated to the siege and the battle in the town in The third city is Senglea, joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result it became a peninsular in shape. During the time of the Knights of St. John, Senglea was used as a hunting area and was known as L Isola di San Giuliano. In 1311 St. Julian s church or chapel was founded. This was the first building to be constructed. On 8 May 1552 the foundation stone of Fort St. Michael was laid. Work on the fort, which was designed by Architect Pedro Pardo was completed in Construction of walled town Senglea took place during the following decade. The area, which had until the 1550s been known as Isola di San Giuliano or Isola di San Michele, was given city status by Grand Master Claude De La Sengle and was named after him. A detailed English commentary by the driver will help you unfold the history of Valletta and the Three Cities connected with two Great Sieges of 1565 and Tour is operated by one of the first two wooden bodied buses purchased in 1921 by the Cottonera Motor Bus Company. These buses were licensed to operate routes between Cottonera and Valletta and were made by local carpenters and mechanics, later called as bus body builders. At that time the local carpenters and mechanics were encouraged to build bus bodies so that the company Cottonera Motor Bus Co. could increase its fleet rapidly. Tour leaves from Sliema Ferries (opposite of Marks & Spencer). 18 Adults Eur 15 Children (5-12 yrs) Eur 9 includes 2 Hour Guided Tour to the Three Cities by a 1920 Bus Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday at 1100 & 1430, Saturday at 1100 (Tour is not organised on a Public Holiday) THEVINTAGE Buses Cirkewwa 0930 Mellieha 0945 Xemxija 0950 Golden Bay 0950 St. Paul s Bay 1000 Bugibba 1010 Qawra 1015 St. Julian s 1030 Sliema 1045 Valletta 1030 Attard 1015 Return transport is provided from Sliema Ferries at 1500 hrs, 1600 hrs or 1800 hrs.
