7 General Information A city with a rich historic and cultural tradition, Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians around 800 B.C. and later colonised by Iberians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Christians. Its privileged position on the shores of the Mediterranean, its mild climate and the friendliness of its inhabitants have all meant that the capital of the Costa del Sol has, throughout its history, sustained excellent trade and cultural relations all over the world. Nowadays, Malaga is a modern, cosmopolitan and welcoming city with over 600,000 inhabitants, which has successfully developed its commercial, industrial and tourist sectors. WEATHER/CLOTHING Malaga is a Mediterranean city with a very mild climate. Winter temperatures very rarely drop below 10ºC and in autumn and spring the average temperature is about 20-25ºC, although evenings can be a lot cooler. Average rainfall for the region is normally quite low. Nevertheless it can rain torrentially during the autumn and spring months. SHOPPING HOURS Normal opening hours: and There are several Shopping Centres open from to 22.00, for instance, El Corte Inglés (up market department store), Centro Larios and Málaga Plaza. Although shops are usually closed on Sundays, there are a number of shops that might be opened in the city centre. You can easily access to the bus lines throught the bus app called EMT, you will see how easy is moving around Málaga! It is available on App Store and Google Play.

10 THE UNIVERSITY In its more than 40 years of existence the University of Malaga has taken on a major role as both principal catalyst of the cultural life of the city and fundamental platform for future developments in the fields of technology and research. The process of creation of the started in 1968 but Málaga had to wait until 1972 to make it official with the foundation of the Faclulties of Medicine and Economic. The University of Malaga constitutes one of the three vertices of the so-called productive triangle of the city, together with the International Airport and the PTA or Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía (Andalusian Science and Technology Park). At present the University of Malaga has two campuses, El Ejido and Teatinos, in addition to a few other buildings located in different parts of the city. The ultimate objective of the policy of the university regarding infrastructure is to eventually have all university centres and services located on the Teatinos Campus with the expamtion of a wider list of degrees, and becoming in a more complete university campus. What started as a student mobility programme in 1987, has grown into something bigger and enriched the lives of more than 9 million direct participants, not to mention the indirect impact it has had on so many others. That s why in 2014 we combined many programmes into one: Erasmus+. We have also created a Facebook group in order to get in touch before the Staff Training Week begins. 12 TRAVEL INFORMATION AND USEFUL LINKS ARRIVAL IN MALAGA For visitors arriving at the international airport Pablo Ruiz Picasso, there are three ways to get into town: A taxi costs around 25 to get to Málaga city centre, and takes roughly 15 minutes to reach the city. There is a bus (line A) into town every minutes, one way ticket costs It takes around 25 minutes. The suburban train leaves every 20 minutes from the airport in two directions: Málaga city centre (15 minutes) and Fuengirola with several stops along Costa del Sol (45 minutes).
