If you can touch and influence students and impute the right values in them, you can expect to see a more prosperous nation in the future. This is because the students in the universities today are going to become the business leaders and political leaders of tomorrow. If you think about it in that context, you ll see the implications of your actions today in leading youth. 5 Healing Initiative Leadership Linkage (HILL) Student Magazine Historical Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated at the far eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea and is at the crossroads of three continents (Europe, Asia and Africa). Cyprus' historical and cultural tradition is very rich and dates back to the 7th millennium B.C. The arrival of the first Mycenaean Greeks on the island in the 15th century B.C. set the foundations for the development of the Greek civilization on the island. Due to its unrivalled strategic location, Cyprus was subject to a number of conquerors and came under the influence of many different cultures and civilizations like for example the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Athenian Empire, Hellenistic Greek dynasties, Roman Empire, Byzantium, the French Lusignans, Venetians, Ottoman Turks from 1571 and finally the British from 1878 up until 1960 when Cyprus gained its independence with Greece, Turkey and Britain as guarantors of the country's independence (Treaty of Establishment). Perspective (Monuments & lessons from history) Culture of country (traditional dresses) Religions: Religion in Cyprus. Christians make up 78% of the Cypriot population. Most Greek Cypriots, and thus the majority of the population of Cyprus, are members of the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus (Church of Cyprus), whereas most Turkish Cypriots are officially Sunni Muslim. Language Alphabets Foods Learning from the past and present for the future Limassol s historic district (around Eleftherias, Irinis and Cleopatras streets) comes to life in the evening. The area is known for its cafes and bars playing live music and streets crowded with people. The souvenir shops, kiosks and the numerous repair shops open during the day. It s nice to look at the ancient buildings, which have undergone restoration (at least of their façade). Before the island was divided, this neighborhood used to be populated by Turkish Cypriots (just like the Old Town in Larnaca).
