High dunes have developed over centuries and, as a result, marshlands and bogs have developed better than on the neighbouring islands. This is also a reason why Borkum has designated a considerably greater part of its land as a nature reserve than the neighbouring islands. The town with the adjacent meadow areas, the harbour and the airfield are excluded from the national park. DEPARTURE BORKUM TO KIEL TRHOUGH KIELER CANAL We sail from Borkum to Brunsbüttel, the entrance of the Kieler Canal. Distance is around 100nm and takes around 13 hours sailing time, with the passage through the Kieler Canal we look at approximately one day. 6 The Hague Canal Tour Few people know that The Hague also has lovely canals and that a boat tour is available. De Ooievaart offers boat trips in English every Saturday afternoon. From April to October you can see The Hague from a different perspective in an open boat. The tour takes you through old and new parts of The Hague, including under bridges and through tunnels. The canals of The Hague are almost 400 years old. They were created for the city's defences around From the water you will see a variety of beautiful buildings and special places, among them the Royal Stables and the Royal Gardens. You will also see the former houses of famous Dutch historical figures such as the 17th-century artists Paulus Potter, Jan Steen and Jan van Gooyen and the philosopher Benedict (Baruch) Spinoza. DINING IN SCHEVENINGEN HARBOUR At the end of the week there is full-on activity in the harbour at Scheveningen. Although this traditional fishing village has blossomed into a popular seaside resort, true to tradition on Friday the harbour is the domain of hardy sea folk and big sea trawlers. Fresh landings of fish are brought in and compared, families stand on the edge to welcome their fathers back and tough tales are told about what happened that week at sea. A stroll around the harbour is like being at the theatre, trawlers and hyper-modern recreational boats and sailboats stand side by side, all together. Admire the theatre performance by night and reserve a good place with a view over the harbour in one of the many cosy restaurants. Do you want a view over everything of Rotterdam then this is something you should do. Many international recognized museums expose beautiful collections. If you have time a visit to the Maritime Museum or Boymans van Beuningen Art Museum is recommended. Page 6

8 DINING AND WINING IN ROTTERDAM Restaurant Parkheuvel (2 stars Michelin) Modern and luxurious restaurant, led by the Van Loo family, situated in a park with wonderful views over the river Maas and not far from Rotterdam's city centre. Parkheuvel restaurant has recently been restyled by the architect Thed Konings in a refined and intimate interior, French art deco style. Parkheuvel s capacity is 75 seats. Furthermore there is a separate, intimate salon where companies can be received. A harmonious gastronomy of a refined taste and rich with subtle aroma is this establishment's goal, in order to please the most spoiled customers. Restaurant Las Palmas Herman den Blijker used the RTL television programme 'Hermans Helden' to find a chef for this extensive fish restaurant in the Las Palmas building in the 'Kop van Zuid'. According to Herman den Blijker, Las Palmas exudes an atmosphere that is a combination of a fish auction, the characteristic fish restaurants of a fishing port and the fish brasseries in Marseille. 9 ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN HELLEVOETSLUIS The Delta Works This edifice was built between 1955 and To build it, an artificial island was created in the middle of the estuary. The final phase of the project was completed with the aid of a cable car. Five km long, the dam incorporates 17 sluices in the middle which help to maintain the balance between fresh and salt water. As these are closed during normal operation, the water is kept in the Nieuwe Waterweg (New Waterway). A navigation lock has been created to the south, near the small harbour. At the mouth of three great rivers (the Rhine, Meuse and Escaut), the provinces of South Holland and Zeeland meet the North Sea, forming a succession of islands and estuaries; the threatened delta region. Get a feel for the hi-tech battle against the rising water by following the road which takes in the anti-storm dams and runs along the reinforced dykes. The huge dam of the eastern Escaut, and the Brouwersdam protect some picturesque villages. 12 ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN ZEELAND Middelburg Abbey The historical Abbey of Middelburg (1100 AC) is located in the city centre and is used for relaxing, music concerts, museum and other city activities. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed with a historical background. Every year there are two music festivals located in the square of the Abbey namely Jazz Festival Middelburg and the Zeeland Nazomer Festival. There is no better place to listen to music and enjoy a drink or two. The Zeeuws Museum is housed in one of the buildings of the Middelburg Abbey, in the old centre of Middelburg, which is also reviewed on Tripadvisor. The museum has a collection of bits and pieces from everything it seems. There are items from the rich history of this town, some mammoth bones, some archaeological findings, some modern art, etc. The museum uses three floors of the old building for the displays. You can reach these floors by stairs or elevator. Most impressive are probably the displays of large tapestries with scenes from sea battles the Dutch had with the Spaniards in the 16th century on the river Schelde, close to Middelburg. This was the time when Middelburg was home to one of the Oostindische Compagnies (East India Companies) which in 1602 would merge with the other major trading companies in Holland to form the famous Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC (United East India Company). The VOC would dominate the international trade of the 17th century and was a major factor of the money machine which made the Golden Age of Holland. The international trade is reflected in the Chambers of Wonders in the museum where you can see numerous items which were brought home by the sailors from their journeys around the world. You can have some enjoyable hours strolling through the different parts of the museum. Page 11

13 YRSEKE (THE CENTRE OF THE DUTCH MUSSELS!) A tour of the mussel and oyster culture is an interesting day out in Zeeland. The tour can be completed with a reception with coffee with a Zeeland bolus (special cake). This can be combined with a film about the mussel fishery, with afterwards a mussel meal in a cozy restaurant in Yerseke. That makes your visit to Yerseke complete. Page 12
