2 APOXYOMENOS - a masterpiece of Croatian and world heritage (2nd 1st century B.C.) The antique bronze statue of an athlete, 192 cm tall, taken from the sea bed between the islet of Vele Orjule and the island of Lošinj on 27 April 1999, is the only large bronze statue found to date on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. The statue represents an athlete, a young sportsman, at the moment of cleaning oil, dust and sweat from his body with a scraping tool after a competition. From nine well-known variations of the Apoxyomenos prototype (the most famous being the bronze statue from Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, discovered in 1896 in Ephesus), the Lošinj statue is the most perfect and best-preserved. The statue s sculptor is unknown but the classical beauty and high quality of workmanship testify to a consummate craftsman. The statue of Apoxyomenos is on permanent display in at the Apoxyomenos Museum (previously Kvarner Palace). The nine scenes of each room offer exquisite sensory experiences. By means of taste, smell, hearing, and vision, the visitors can fully and individually experience the Apoxyomenos, as well as the destination of the island of vitality, one of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean. 3 Lošinj Museum The Tower, Veli Lošinj The Lošinj Museum - One museum, two islands, three buildings The Lošinj Museum has three locations, in, Veli Lošinj, and in Osor, and it keeps historical, archaeological, ethnographical, and art collections. The Museum s headquarters is in the Fritzi Palace in where visitors can see many collections, like the Collection of old Piperata masters (Italian baroque and rococo paintings), Dante Lussino Photograph Collection (photographic equipment from the late 19th and early 20th century, and reproduction of panoramic photographs of Lošinj from the beginning of the 20th century), and Andro Vid Mihičić Collection (paintings and sculptures of Croatian modern art). Apart from study exhibitions relating to the Town of, the gallery area for temporary exhibitions also presents contemporary art. The Tower Museum in Veli Lošinj presents the town s history and the importance of sea navigation. 4 Dolphin day We have been celebrating Dolphin Day in Veli Lošinj since Join our party on 1st July! Friendship of Lošinj and dolphins The Lošinj archipelago is a habitat to about 200 bottlenose dolphins. The main aim of The Blue World Institute in Veli Lošinj is contributing to the research and conservation of the marine environment through public awareness and education. You can also join the campaign Adopt a Dolphin. If you would like to adopt, you can do it personally in Veli Lošinj or on the Institute s website. Becoming a volunteer means that you join the Blue World crew in Veli Lošinj and help fund the research! By participating in the Blue World s campaign Adopt a Dolphin, you are supporting the Adriatic Dolphin Project and our efforts in research and protection of bottle nose dolphins in the waters of Cres and Lošinj, and reinforcing the protection of their habitat. Considering a way of life, love and respect for sea of our skipper, you will go in search of dolphins. It is necessary to know very well this area to notice even the smallest changes on the sea surface. Not every wave or jump means that there is a dolphin! 6 Theme viewpoint Providenca Theme viewpoint Providenca combines the 300 m long educational trail Apsyrtides and a viewpoint bar with local specialties. Named after the Greek term for the islands of Cres and Lošinj, the Apsyrtides, this educational trail provides a deeper understanding of the islands that can be seen from the very viewpoint. 28 textual interpretations with photographs show the island for what it really is unique and unrepeatable. Vidikovac Bar offers a special experience. 18 hand-crafted tables and benches carry the names of famous ships that were built in well-known local shipyards in the 19th century. 7 Lošinj historical underwater park The park is located within the diving centre in Čikat Bay, which is situated 1 km from the centre of. The setup of the park consists of a total of 11 different exponents, which have been placed between 5 and 15 meters deep in the water and testify about the rich history of the island and its region. Among the exhibited items, there are replicas of cannons from the 16th century, replicas of ancient amphoras, anchors from the 4th and 5th centuries, Venetian cannons, machine guns from World War II, while the greatest attraction of the underwater park is the replica of the ancient bronze athlete statue Apoxyomenos from the 2nd 1st century B.C., which is also a sort of a symbol of. The replica of Apoxyomenos has been placed in the upright position in its natural size, while the entire trail tour of the park is roughly 300 meters long. All licensed divers can visit the park, and due to relatively shallow waters in which the exhibit items are placed, persons without any diving experience can dive into the park in the company of a diving instructor from the diving centre through the so-called Discovery Dive program. Children under the age of 12 cannot partake in the program, while all adults can, as long as they don t have any health issues. Between May 1st and October 30th, the park is open daily (including Sundays) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

8 Lošinj s Fragrant Garden - a nursery of the island medicinal herbs in On a guided tour, visitors can get acquainted with the rich flora of the island, the healing properties of herbs and buy an original island souvenir. The Garden hosts over 250 wild aromatic plants that spread their powerful fragrance all over the Cres and Lošinj archipelago. More than 100 of these nonnative plant species complete this garden s image. Garden plant habitats are framed by dry stone walls - gromače - built in the tradition of the island s traditional architecture. From the garden retreats and relaxation areas you can enjoy a beautiful view all the way to the lofty mountain of Velebit.
