3 I n t r o d u c t i o n For the first time, the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published a report on names and surnames in Kosovo. One of the things people and places have in common is the NAME. In many cases, people are interested about the origin of their name and whether their name has a meaning. Names are words or set of words by which a person, place or other being is known, addressed or referred to. While the name is the attribute given to a person for the purpose of identification (after birth), the surname is inherited from the family we share with other family members. In Kosovo the surname usually comes from the father. Surname of the family children taken from the father is also known in most European countries. Surname, a hereditary name common to all members of a family, a distinct from given name, has come later as a result of the need to distinguish people from each other. Surnames in Albanian population are estimated to have been applied since the late 18th century. The report will provide data on the most common names and surnames in Kosovo and their extension in municipalities of Kosovo based on resident population from the Census of The report provides data to the broader Kosovan society, and further, so that they can study the origin, extension and the meaning of their names and surnames. This report is based on user s request that may be relevant to other research areas, as Genealogy 1, Etymology 2, or Onomastics 3. 7 1 Characteristics of Name and Surname The full legal Name of a person usually in the documents contains at most three identifying terms: name, middle name (usually for females after marriage), and at the end the surname or last name or family name. Depending on the country, the Name and Surname is written in two forms: First the Name is entered or is given and then the Surname, as in: Kosovo, Albania, English speaking countries, most European countries, South America, etc., while in some other countries first the Surname is entered or given and then the Name, as in: Hungary, France, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Romania, Japan, China, etc. In Kosovo, and many European and English-speaking countries, just one Surname is usually used, in some Portuguese or Spanish speaking countries usually are used two Surnames, while in Arabic countries usually more than two Surnames are used. In Slavic countries, including Greece and Iceland, there are different forms of family names for male and female family members. Family name issues arise, in particular, in giving the name to a just-born child, where a common family surname is approved even upon marriage, renouncing the family name and replacing a new family name. Etymologists classify European Surnames into five categories depending on their origin: given surname, professional surname, country surname, nickname and decorative surname. The Name and Surname in statistics is usually used as an alternative key for identification in cases where other source data are missing. But in many cases, we have identical Names and Surnames from the same location / residence, which in some cases cause difficulties in identifying the person in question. 7

8 1.1 Some charasteristics of Names and Surnames in Kosovo Names: Based on the available data, in Kosovo the number of Names that are different in is 68,122 in total. The longest name in Kosovo was Ismailq with 13 letters and Mirandolinda with a total of 12 letters. The shortest name was Ad and Al. According to the alphabet, most Names started with letter A, with a total of 8,026 names, while at least started with letter C, a total of 407 names. The most common Name (frequent) in Kosovo for females was the name FATIME with a total of 8,626 persons holding this name. The most common Name (frequent) in Kosovo for males was BAJRAM. Surnames: The total number of Surnames in Kosovo was 26,557 in total. Krasniqi is the most common surname in Kosovo where over 58,199 people hold this surname. Note: At the request of users, this report also contains two Tables which include births according to month and the season of the year. 8

12 2 Primary Names and Surnames in Kosovo The Table below shows the highest frequency of ten (10) primary Names and Surnames in Kosovo. According to the available data 4 the highest frequent Name is the female gender name FATIME with 8,626 or 0.50% of the population with this name. The Surname with the highest frequency was the surname KRASNIQI with 58,199 or 3.35% of the population had this surname. The difference in the frequency between the first name and the second name was by (26.69%), while for surnames the difference between the first and the second surname was very small, by 1.38% distinction between surname Krasniqi and Gashi. 13 The following Table shows the transformation of Names over different periods of time, adapting to historical-political, social, religious and national developments. While in the years dominated names such as Fatime, Emine, Ajshe, Bajram or Ramadan, in the years dominated names: Agim, Bekim, Fadil, Afëdita or Ganimete. By the end of the 1980s the Names were more related to earlier historical, social, religious, etc. developments, but after the 1990s the Names had mostly Albanian meaning like: Egezon, Liridona, Qendresa, Erëaza, Edona, etc. Surname Krasniqi was dominant almost in most of the period of time reviewed in this report, apart from the years and which showed that the surname Gashi was mostly pronounced compared to Krasniqi. Some of the factors that may have affected this dominant family Surname are: more / fewer natural increase, migration and change of Surname. The Table below reflects five (5) most pronounced Names and Surnames over time periods as well changes through time. Table 2. 15 3 The same Name and Surname In many cases in Kosovo we encounter persons with the same name and surname which, in some cases in the past, were difficult to identify in time periods (causing delays, suspicions or even wrongdoing), given that we have many cases where persons in Kosovo have in common such as: name, surname, place of residence, municipality, state and year of birth. Recent technological developments have enabled the advancement of databases and their exchange through time periods based on the personal number, date and month of birth which are used as the key for identification. In the Table below, are given ten (10) names that have the same surname in order to estimate their frequency. Table 4. 17 Despite the overwhelming majority of every single age, dominant were the surname Krasniqi (at age 50) and Gashi (38), although it seems that despite this surname, the surname Berisha, Ademi and Hasani dominated in ages over 98, 99, 100 and more years-old. 19 4 Main characteristics of names and surnames in municipalities of Kosovo Two main Tables on Names and Surnames are provided at the municipal level. Table 7 lists five (5) main Names and Surnames in municipalities as well as their frequency. Name data show dominant Names in municipalities including their number in those municipalities, while Surname data are important for the users to be notified of five (5) main Surnames in Kosovo municipalities. It is worth mentioning that ten (10) first names were spread almost in the majority of municipalities while surname KRASNIQI was found in 31 municipalities of Kosovo. Interestingly, despite the fact that the Surname Krasniqi was most frequent in Kosovo, Gashi was the surname that was dominant in 10 municipalities while Krasniqi in 8 municipalities. In Prishtina, as the capital, surname Gashi was the first, Krasniqi was the second most pronounced Surname, while in the second town according to the size of the inhabitants was the surname Krasniqi before Gashi. 29 Kosovo Agency of Statistics short description Kosovo Agency of Statistics is a professional institution which deals with collection, processing and publication of official statistical data. As such acts since 1948 and has passed through several historical stages, structured according to state regulation of those times. On 2 August 1999, the Agency has resumed his professional work (after nine years of interruption of all statistical series detrimental to the interest of Kosovo), as an independent institution under the Ministry of Public Administration. Since the Agency operates in the frames of the Prime Minister s Office. Office is funded by the Kosovo Consolidated Budget, but also by donors for specific projects and for technical professional support. Kosovo Agency of Statistics acts according to the Law No. 04/L-036 which entered into force on Programme of Official Statistics 2013/2017 is in implementation for the development of statistical system in correlation with the European Union statistics (EUROSTAT). Kosovo Agency of Statistics has this organizational structure: production departments; (Department of Economic statistics and National Accounts, Department of Agriculture and Environment statistics and Department of Social statistics. Support Departments; Department of Methodology and Information Technology, Department of Policy Planning, Coordination and Communication, Department of Census and survey and Department of Administration. Within the Agency are also established Regional Offices; Gjakove, Gjilan, Mitrovica, Peja, Prizren, Pristina and Ferizaj Number of employees and budget are still limited. In KAS are employed in total 143 workers, of whom 98 (68,58 %) at the headquarters of the Agency, while in the Regional Offices, 45 (31,5%). Agency s educational qualifying structure is as follows: 61,7% with university education,15,4% with with non-tertiary education, and 17.5% with secondary education. We have professional and technical cooperation with all Ministries of the Government of Kosovo, especially with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Central Bank of Kosovo, with international institutions, EUROSTAT, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Sweden's SIDA, DFID, UNFPA, UNDP, UNIVEF, and with the statistical institutions of the countries in the region. Kosovo Agency of Statistics almost completely covers the territory of Kosovo, based on the statistical structure of the enumeration areas as the basic unit and sole in the country from which it gets first hand information. All surveys conducted in the field use the extension of the samples in these enumeration areas but also a statistical methodology according to international recommendations. During the collection of statistical data and reports from reporting entities are involved professionals, technicians, administrators, servants of the country offices, field enumerators from regional offices, etc. In 2011, the project of Population Census, Households and Dwellings was successfully implemented, and in 2014 was successfully carried out the Agriculture Census. The result obtained from these censuses will have an important role in the development policies. The mission of the Agency; to meet the needs of users with qualitative statistical data, objective, in time and space so that users have reliable base to conduct regular analysis in the interest of planning and project development at the municipal and country level.
