It is located at the crossing of two trans-european transport corridors (4 and 9) and in the proximity of the Danube (corridor 7) It is at the heart of a complex communication network, the starting point to 8 national roads, Bucharest Piteşti and Bucharest Constanţa motorways, as well as to 4 double railways. There are 2 airports in the capital city It has an exhibition complex of European standards (ROMEXPO), with an exhibition area of over 55,000 square meters and over 40 specialized trade fairs and exhibitions organized yearly 21% of the companies active nationwide are registered in Bucharest

The gross domestic product increase in the Bucharest region is mainly supported by construction, services and industry In 2007, the GDP at the level of the Bucharest Ilfov region amounted at 74.8% of the European Union average, according to Eurostat, remotely followed by the West Region GDP (39.8%) The companies registered in Bucharest handle over 35% of the country s exports and almost 40% of the country s imports It sums up 64.3% of the total volume of foreign direct investments in Romania

4 A MUNICIPIULUI COMMERCE AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY Bucharest CCI years at the service of the business community Bucharest CCI is the rightful successor of the first Bucharest Chamber of Commerce set-up in 1868 and undissolved throughout its history, retaining all the patrimony rights deriving there from, irrespective of its form of organisation and operation ever since The Chamber is a nongovernmental, autonomous organisation whose aim is to promote the trade and industry in Bucharest on domestic and foreign markets, and to approach the Romanian authorities in order to uphold traders interests Our organisation, the strongest territorial chamber of commerce, is structured into four sections: industry, commerce and tourism, services, and collective members

The Bucharest Danube Channel the project was started in the 70s; 73 km-long navigable, starting from the Danube up to the port of Bucharest (the 5th Danube capital port) works characteristics: length m; width m; draught 3.00 m; capacity: traffic of 2 mil. tones/year four sluicing steps of the navigable sector were designed as hydropower-lock structures, with 5.70 MW per structure

The Bucharest Danube Channel Type of work: hydro technical construction Volume of works completed during : 70% Remaining works to be completed: - as a physical percentage: 30% (about 4 years works) - in value of: 450 million Necessary stages: - Drafting of the feasibility study - Re-designing of the work as a whole on the required level of 2010 Period of investment amortization: about 14 years

7 A MUNICIPIULUI COMMERCE BUCUREŞTI AND INDUSTRY The main benefits of completing this channel: navigable way having a transport capacity of 16 million tones/year (container port) the capital gets a navigable link to the main cities along the Danube (Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava), the main urban centres on the Rhine, as well as direct access to the sea port of Constantza and the European inland navigable ways protection against floods for approx. 30 thousands ha of agricultural lands and 11 localities (approx individual households);

8 CAMERA BUCHAREST DE CHAMBER COMERŢ ŞI OF INDUSTRIE A COMMERCE MUNICIPIULUI AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY The main benefits of completing this channel: ensuring the necessary water source for irrigation of more than 150 thousands ha of cultivable land and for domestic water supply to the neighbouring localities supply of electrical power of about 60 GWw/year through the 4 hydroelectric power stations development of recreational and tourist activities in the area development of fish breeding facilities on a surface of up to 1,250 ha favourable environmental impact

Hidropower complex Turnu Magurele Nikopol Danube is the border between Romania and Bulgaria for 471 km the hydropower complex Turnu Magurele Nikopol is envisaged from the 70s the project consists in two hydropower plants of 400 MW each, on both Bulgarian and Romanian side main characteristics : max operating level: m; max depth: 17 m; total install capacity: 800 MW total annual power generation: 4390 GWw lake reservoir: 281 KM

11 A COMMERCE MUNICIPIULUI AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY Steps to promote the projects taken by Bucharest CCI the two projects (B & C) were presented during the 4 th Danube meeting at Bucharest, on March 6, 2007, the second one by both the Romanian and Bulgarian side a bilateral meeting to enlarge upon the B project between the Romanian and Bulgarian representatives took place in Turnu Magurele on 26 of April 2007; both sides expressed their full support for the project, informed their respective Governments and lobbied for the project the Bucharest - Danube Channel was presented at the Bucharest Vienna Forum on May 15, 2007

12 CAMERA BUCHAREST DE COMERŢ CHAMBER ŞI INDUSTRIE OF A COMMERCE MUNICIPIULUI AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY Steps to promote the projects taken by Bucharest CCI the Bulgarian and Bucharest CCIs cooperated closely for promoting this project in different international events (BAC meetings, VEF, other Danube meetings etc the subject of the Turnu Magurele Nikopol project was raised during the official meeting of two Prim-ministers of Romania and Bulgaria (Ruse, September 19th, 2007) and the two PM agreed to include this item on the agenda of the first joint meeting of the two Cabinets in 2008 a new feasibility study for the Turnu Magurele Nikopol project will be drawn up. Based on this study, financing sources might be identified from both countries public funds, European funds or private sources

BEGA Channel (I) the line of BEGA Channel is Timisoara Pancevo Tisa Danube the channel works were started in 1728; in 1732 the channel was navigable (44 km - Romania, 72 km - Serbia) Dr. Eng. Maximilian Fermaunt (the main projector) realized the connection of the Channel with TIMIS river (Costei and Topolovat) for assuring water level and for preventing floods the hydropower point Costei is still operating by over then 250 years the goods were transported by Danube to Vienna and further to Kelheim Rin Channel up to the North of Europe

14 A COMMERCE MUNICIPIULUI AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY BEGA Channel (II) in 1930, vessels of 70 m length carried to goods/year the transport of the vessels were stopped in 1958 due to the silting of the waters the last maintenance work was made in 1945 in 2007 the project of rehabilitation the Bega Channel was approved the works are beginning this year and will be finished in 2010 this Channel will connect Timisoara with the pan European Corridor no VII

15 CAMERA BUCHAREST DE COMERŢ CHAMBER ŞI INDUSTRIE OF A MUNICIPIULUI COMMERCE AND BUCUREŞTI INDUSTRY The main importance of these projects main issues today: energy, global warming, environment protection 27% of global pollution comes from transport industry, particularly road transportation and from fossil fuel consumption the future belongs to renewable & green energy and multimodal transports, where water transport is the main component all these projects are directly connected with putting into operation the pan European Corridor no VII the Corridor no VII could became the EU regular containers line from / to the Black Sea and further on
