It hosts 24 churches, six monasteries, four fortresses, the attractive Four Wells, as well as 2,851 stone stairs, the largest number of baroque organs and the medieval monastery garden of St Lawrence. The Cathedral of St James from the 15th and the 16th centuries is the most important Šibenik monument recognised in the European architecture and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The cathedral was built for more than a hundred years, entirely of stone. Since this year the St. Nicholas Fortress in Šibenik has also been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fortress was built during the 16th century to protect the town against Turkish attacks from the sea.
