1 Press clipping: World Tobacco Growers Day Macedonia Tobacco growers send petition to the Government: Protect us from the WHO 29 October 2012 The Macedonian delegation, from the Ministry of Health, which will participate in the CoP5 meeting next month in South Korea, to vote against the World Health Organization measures that would restrict the countries and the tobacco production, will be canceled the direct investments of the Governments towards the tobacco manufacturers and the subsidize of the cultivation of this crop will be disabled. The measures that WHO wants to introduce will directly reach the existence of 130 thousand tobacco producers or 30 thousand families in Macedonia because it requires the tobacco cultivation to be carried out in strict annual seasons, to reduce the area under tobacco and dissolve all bodies that connect the governments with the tobacco producers, wrote the Union of associations of tobacco manufacturers in the petition for the Macedonian government. The petition was the document for which was discussed today in Veles by the executive board of the association of craftwork and thus marked the 28th of October, the World Day of tobacco manufacturing. They came from all over Macedonia, as they said to try to protect themselves from the direct threat that the WHO already sent. This should not happen to a two centuries old tradition of cultivation of this crop. No matter Macedonia signed the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and redemption, since it falls under a drug, but we have firm contracts for supervision by the state, and because the WHO has found no alternative, so far, we will continue with the production of tobacco. Still we are afraid of the result of the meeting which will be held on 17 th of November in Seoul, where again the requests of the WHO request will be discussed and conclusions will have to be brought, so we are asking our government to gives us firm guaranties that they will protect us said the president, Dancho Milevski. These recommendations from the WHO for the Macedonian tobacco producers are considered as the greatest threat, so far. If they are accepted it will bring in Macedonia misery and poverty of about 250 thousand citizens that are living from tobacco producing.
