First, there are no systematized data on distribution of these species in Serbia in a single paper. Second, the collections of Heteroptera stored at the Natural History Museum in Belgrade include some specimens collected more than 50 years ago, which are new records for the fauna of Serbia but were previously unpublished. Third, for the occasion of anniversary of my respected colleague Dr. Jordi Ribes I wanted to write about the same subject that he has studied in his fruitful career of entomologist (for example: J. Ribes, 1965, 1978, 1982;
2 330 PROTIC: The genus Phytocoris in Serbia (Miridae) J. Ribes and Goula, 1997; J. Ribes and E. Ribes, 1994, 2000, 2002; J. Ribes and Heiss, 2001; J. Ribes and Pagola-Carte, 2009). Species of genus Phytocoris in Serbia were previously presented only in individual faunistic papers (Kormilev, , 1936, 1939; Protic, 1986) and two catalogues (Protic, 1998; Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Genus Phytocoris is represented in Serbia with 17 species. The data range from the Oshanin s catalogue (1912) to the last collected specimens in The list of species of genus Phytocoris in Serbia was composed by combining the literature data and data collected by identification of specimens from the collections of Natural History Museum. 6. The collections include 178 specimens of genus Phytocoris. All specimens were preserved, inventoried and stored in the collection by Nikola Kormilev and the Study Collection of Heteroptera. This paper includes data from 65 localities (Fig. 1). The list of localities in Serbia (below) includes the UTM codes. Species were numerated according to taxonomic principles outlined in the catalogue of Palaearctic Heteroptera (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Some changes and additions are now proposed to that catalogue concerning the distribution of certain species in the territory of ex-yugoslavia. Identification was aided by using standard identification keys by Stichel (1957) and Wagner (1974), as well as the special papers by Linnavuori (1999), Rieger (1989) and Wagner (1954, 1961, 1963, 1967, 1968a, 1968b, 1969). Discussion and conclusions The analysis of distribution of species in genus Phytocoris, according to studies on collected specimens stored in the collections at Natural History Museum and the published papers, has shown that data include specimens from very diverse areas and habitats in Serbia (Fig. 1). Most data pertain to the broader region of Belgrade, while the least amount of data exist for Western Serbia. The other parts of Serbia have been generally uniformly studied, at least according to the number of studied localities. The Study Collection includes 16 species out of 17 included in this paper. The remaining one species, Phytocoris obscuratus, is represented by specimens in the collection by Nikola Kormilev, which also contains specimens of Ph. ulmi, Ph. varipes and Ph. tiliae tiliae, collected at certain localities in Serbia. Phytocoris (Eckerleinius) incanus Fieber, 1864 was collected in Serbia only at Deliblato Sands. This is obviously a rare species, as the period of time between these two records was 100 years. Its range in the Balkan Peninsula includes Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999), it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Exophytocoris) parvulus Reuter, 1880 is distributed throughout the Balkan Peninsula. It has yet to be recorded in Macedonia. The record from Montenegro (Protic and Roganovic, 2002) was published at the time when Serbia and Montenegro were one state (state association). For Serbia it is presently known from a single locality at Mt. Kosmaj (620 m). Montenegro (ME) and Serbia (RS) should be added to the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Phytocoris (Ktenocoris) exoletus Costa, 1853 was collected at the locality of Deliblato sand in Banat. This Mediterranean species is currently known from the Balkan countries: Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Croatia (Dalmatia) and Serbia. Serbia is a new record for the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Phytocoris (Ktenocoris) insignis Reuter, 1876 has been collected in mountain and hill areas in Serbia. This is a new species for the fauna of Serbia. Data on this species are published here for the first time, although the specimens have been stored in our collection since Serbia is a new record for the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Phytocoris (Ktenocoris) nowickyi Fieber, 1870 was cited for Serbia in the Oshanin s catalogue (1912) and after that there were no known records for Serbia until The entomologist Aleksandar Stojanovic had collected several specimens at two localities: in the vicinity of Belgrade (Begaljica) and in Srem (Surduk). In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Ktenocoris) ulmi (Linnaeus, 1758) is distributed at many localities in Serbia. The collection includes specimens from 1942 onward, while the earliest literature data are from Its range includes all countries of the Balkan Peninsula except Greece. In the Catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Montenegro (ME) and Serbia (RS) instead of YU. Phytocoris (Ktenocoris) varipes Boheman, 1852 has the widest distribution in Serbia of all species of this genus. 65 specimens were collected at 20 localities, mostly at meadows and weed patches. It is present in all countries of the Balkan Peninsula. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Montenegro (ME) and Serbia (RS) instead of YU. Phytocoris (Leptophytocoris) ustulatus Herrich- Schaeffer, 1835 is present in Serbia at several localities, from lowlands to 1000 m above sea level. It is represented in all countries of the Balkan Peninsula except Montenegro, where it was probably not re-
7 Heteropterus Rev. Entomol. (2011) 11(2): corded due to lack of research in the area. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) confusus Reuter, 1896 is a new species for the fauna of Serbia. So far a single male was recorded at a single locality in the broader vicinity of Belgrade (Grkovo). In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) longipennis Flor, 1861 was recorded in Serbia at three localities: Predejane (south Serbia), one park in Belgrade, and the mountain Rudnik in central Serbia (Šumadija). The specimen collected in vicinity of Belgrade (at locality Košutnjak) was stored in the collection by Nikola Kormilev under the incorrect identification of Ph. (Ribautomiris) buxi Ribaut, The specimen from Rudnik, mt is new for Study Collection. So far in the Balkan Peninsula it was also recorded only from Macedonia and Bulgaria. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) obscuratus Carvalho, 1959 (= obscurus Reuter, 1875) is known from Serbia only due to one specimen from Leskovac. It was collected by Nikola Kormilev, but there are no data on date of collecting. This specimen was incorrectly identified as Phytocoris confusus Reuter, 1896 but after the check it was determined that it belongs to Ph. obscuratus. In the Balkan Peninsula this species was also recorded from Croatia, Greece and Macedonia. Serbia is a new record for the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999). Phytocoris (Phytocoris) pini Kirschbaum, 1856 is a new species for the fauna of Serbia. Our late colleague Ljubodrag Jankovic had collected this specimen in 1954 at mountain Kopaonik, but it was identified only now. After almost 50 years I collected one further specimen at mountain Tara. A few specimens from the mountain Durmitor (Montenegro) are stored in the Study Collection (Protic et al., 1990). This species is distributed in all countries of the Balkan Peninsula. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Montenegro (ME) and Serbia (RS) instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) populi (Linnaeus, 1758) was first recorded for Serbia in 1998, in localities in the vicinity of Belgrade on Acer campestre. Records for this species in Serbia are now published for the first time. FIGURE 2. Phytocoris meridionalis Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835 was collected in the vicinity of Belgrade on Acer campestre. The specimens from the Study Collection were drawn by colleague entomologist Aleksandar Stojanovic. In the Balkan Peninsula it is also distributed in Bulgaria, Croatia and Greece. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) reuteri Saunders, 1876 has so far been recorded only at a single locality in Serbia: Mala Moštanica (Protic, 1998). For Croatia there are only some very old records (Horváth, 1897). In the Balkan Peninsula it was also recorded in Bulgaria. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) setiger Reuter, 1896 was recorded at three localities in Serbia, along the river Danube: Usje, Zatonje (within the sand dunes of Ram and Golubac) and Vinca. According to the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it is distributed in the Medite-
8 336 PROTIC: The genus Phytocoris in Serbia (Miridae) rranean Region, and within the Balkan Peninsula it is present in Greece, Croatia and Serbia. In that catalogue it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Phytocoris) tiliae tiliae Fabricius, 1777 was recorded at several localities in Serbia during the last 12 years, while Kormilev had collected a specimen in Southern Serbia at Leskovac. This species has an extensive range which includes most countries in the Balkan region. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov, 1999) it should say Serbia instead of YU. Phytocoris (Stictophytocoris) meridionalis Herrich- Schaeffer, 1835 has been known in Serbia since 1997 (Protic, 1998). Since then it was collected at several localities in broader vicinity of Belgrade on deciduous trees. In the countries of the Balkan Peninsula it has still not been recorded in Montenegro and Macedonia. In the catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region (Kerzhner and Josifov 1999), it should say Serbia instead of YU. According to frequency of appearance at various localities in Serbia, certain species may be characterized as vulnerable as they were either recorded after long gaps of time or they are present in fragile habitats (Ph. incanus, Ph. nowickyi, Ph. confusus, Ph. longipennis, Ph. obscuratus, Ph. reuteri and Ph. setiger). Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude to Dipl. Ing.
