July 7 20, Days/13 Nights day-by-day Itinerary Day 1 Depart Home City/Anchorage, Alaska Day 2 Anchorage/Seward (Embark) Day 3 Harriman Fjord/College Fjord, Prince William Sound Day 4 Kayak Island/Cruising the Gulf of Alaska Day 5 Elfin Cove/Point Adolphus Day 6 Haines Day 7 Skagway Day 8 Juneau Day 9 Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm Day 10 Petersburg/Cruising Wrangell Narrows/Wrangell Day 11 Misty Fjords National Monument/ Walker Cove/Rudyard Bay Day 12 Metlakatla/Ketchikan Day 13 Prince Rupert (Disembark), British Columbia/Seattle, Washington Day 14 Return to Home City Day 1 Depart Home City/Anchorage, Alaska Arrive and transfer to the Anchorage Hilton Hotel for overnight; your time is at leisure until departure tomorrow morning. Day 2 Anchorage/Seward (Embark) Your awe-inspiring adventure begins with a motorcoach transfer today. Delight in one of the world s truly spectacular drives through untouched landscapes at the heart of Kenai Peninsula. The picturesque harbor town of Seward, one of Alaska s oldest communities, features a historic downtown district filled with quaint shops and art galleries. Upon arrival, embark the Clipper Odyssey and settle into your cabin before setting sail for the Gulf of Alaska later tonight. Day 3 Harriman Fjord/ College Fjord, Prince William Sound The spectacular sights and sounds of glistening glaciers form an indelible impression as you wind through pristine Prince William Sound.
Situated between an outflow of glacial ice and a rocky outcropping, Harriman Fjord was discovered in 1899 by the famed Alaska Expedition of railroad magnate Edward Harriman. Relive the thrill of discovery as the Clipper Odyssey, similar in size to Harriman s steamship, explores this secluded inlet. And, in College Fjord, cruise by glaciers named for Ivy League schools. Watch as they slowly calve into the water. Conditions permitting, you ll crystallize your experience with a Zodiac excursion for a true insider s view of the power and essence of the Gulf of Alaska. Day 4 Kayak Island/Cruising the Gulf of Alaska Few places on Earth have a more natural aura than uninhabited Kayak Island, where naturalist Georg Steller became the first European to set foot on Alaskan soil in Answer the call of the wild as your knowledgeable naturalists lead walks through timeless trails featuring foxes, caribou, Sitka deer, bald eagles, bears, and birds. Later this afternoon, relax on board and take advantage of the many fine amenities aboard the Clipper Odyssey while cruising through the spectacular Gulf of Alaska. Day 5 Elfin Cove/Point Adolphus You ll be hooked by the charm and character of Elfin Cove, a quintessential Alaskan fishing town on the northern shore of Chichagof Island. Midafternoon, arrive at Point Adolphus Alaska s most famous Gene Harrison first started working as a naturalist guide in the late 1970s, traveling through Minnesota and Wisconsin presenting educational programs to schools, accompanied by his McKenzie Valley wolf, Cree, who he had raised since the age of six weeks. A resident of Alaska for more than 20 years, Gene began guiding in Southeast Alaska in 1991, and considers sharing his expertise and knowledge of the area s flora and fauna a gift. A graduate of Atelier Lack, an artist s school founded by the classical realist artist, Richard Lack, Gene feels his skills in art complement his naturalist background. Whether a face-to-face meeting with a bear, or sticking your nose to the ground on a cold and rainy day looking for that rare orchid, each experience contributes in its own way to a better understanding of this magical place Gene calls home. While INTRAV makes every effort to ensure the participation of the speaker listed, all are subject to substitution or cancellation without notice. humpback whale-feeding area and home to many must-see marine mammals, including orcas, sea lions, and seals. Day 6 Haines A morning walking tour offers a unique Northern Exposure perspective of this vital, visually appealing pioneer town. The U.S. Army built Fort William Seward here in 1904, but after World War II it was adapted for use as a native Tlingit cultural center. Don t miss the nearby Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, a 48,000-acre habitat established
Watch for Alaska's remarkable and abundant wildlife while cruising the glaciers and fjords of the Inside Passage. to protect and perpetuate the world s largest concentration of bald eagles. Day 7 Skagway The rush is to Skagway, a colorful Alaskan tourist attraction once considered the roughest, rowdiest town on the frontier during the famous Gold Rush of This Gateway to the Klondike boasts a celebrated past, which you ll discover during a Skagway streetcar tour today. Follow along the route used by the gold rushers the narrow gauge railway laid during the rush s peak and witness some of the most splendid natural panoramas found anywhere before returning to Skagway, with its historic district of gold-rush era buildings. Day 8 Juneau America s most scenic state capital, Juneau is a jewel surrounded by intercoastal waterways, lush rain forests, rugged mountainsides, and awe-inspiring glaciers. Cosmopolitan for its size, Juneau is also a creator s paradise home to artists, actors, poets, and writers who draw inspiration from the Alaskan wilderness. To experience the borough s breadth, bring your walking shoes: Juneau is larger in area than The nimble Clipper Odyssey takes you to nature's doorstep, following winding waterways to hidden coves that are too remote for larger vessels.
ALASKA Anchorage Point Kayak Island Adolphus Seward Skagway GULF OF HARRIMAN/ COLLEGE ALASKA FJORDS ELFIN PRINCE COVE WILLIAM SOUND Petersburg PACIFIC OCEAN the state of Delaware and for many years was the country s largest city. Day 9 Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm Arm yourself with cameras as the Clipper Odyssey heads toward the glassy waters of Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm, two unforgettable fjords featuring the state s most compelling mix of mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, glaciers, and icebergs. Search the cliffs for mountain goats scaling the near-vertical rock faces, chiseled from Yosemite-like granite; or, possibly, see black bears strolling the shores and listen to the sounds of harbor seals lazing atop ice floes. At the head of the fjords are tidewater glaciers, including Tracy Arm s brilliant-blue Sawyer Glacier. Day 10 Petersburg/Cruising Wrangell Narrows/Wrangell Today, explore Petersburg, one of Alaska s major fishing communities, and discover Wrangell, one of the state s oldest non-native settlements. Wrangell Narrows a winding 22-mile channel used by fishing boats and ferries, but not by larger ships is marked by some 60 lights and buoys because of its challenging navigation. The Clipper Odyssey s shallow draft and easy maneuverability enable her Metlakatla to cruise extremely BRITISH close to shore, COLUMBIA which affords Haines unparalleled Juneau TRACY ARM glimpses of the (SAWYER GLACIER) region s rich flora Wrangell Misty Fjords and fauna. National Monument/ Prince Ketchikan Rupert Day 11 Misty Fjords National Monument/Walker Cove/Rudyard Bay Seattle Created in 1978 WASHINGTON by presidential proclamation, Misty Fjords National Monument encompasses more than 2.1 million acres of protected wilderness. Europeans first visited the region in 1793 when George Vancouver sailed through Behm Canal, the prominent sea-filled glacial trough along the monument s western margin. Zodiac cruises explore picturesque Walker Cove and Rudyard Bay, where rock walls jut 3,000 feet above the ocean. Day 12 Metlakatla/ Ketchikan Morning brings you to Metlakatla, a Tsimshian Indian community of about 1,500 people on the western side of Annette Island. In 1891, the U.S. Congress formally recognized the community by creating Annette Island Reserve, Native culture and traditions abound
the only federal reservation for indigenous peoples in Alaska. Your final stop is Ketchikan, Alaska s fourthlargest city and the Salmon Capital of the World. This popular tourist town nestled at the crossroads of three native cultures Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Haida sits atop steep hillsides supported on wooden pilings, with numerous boardwalks, staircases, totem poles, shops, and saloons along famous Creek Street.
