3 HARVARD STUDY LEADER DAVID A. AGUILAR, former director of public affairs and science information at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, is an internationally recognized author, lecturer, astronomy expert, naturalist, and space artist whose expertise lies in explaining the fascinating connections between the universe and ourselves. He is a Random House/Smithsonian and National Geographic author and illustrator, and the television host of the Science Channel s NASA s Unexplained Files and the History Channel s The Universe series. He has been featured on the BBC, ABC News, CNN, and NPR, and in Time magazine, the New York Times, USA Today, National Geographic, Sky & Telescope, and Scientific American. He is also past director of special media for NASA s historic New Horizons mission to Pluto. Asteroid 1990A was named to honor his outstanding achievements in science education, and he has the added distinction of being a Grammy-nominated musician. Tuesday, October 2 VALLETTA, MALTA / SEA CLOUD Arrive in Valletta and gather for lunch before transferring to the awaiting Sea Cloud. Enjoy a bon voyage toast on deck as you sail out of the historic harbor en route to Sicily. L, D Wednesday, October 3 SYRACUSE, SICILY, ITALY Splendid Syracuse, once the largest city in the ancient world, was a formidable rival to Athens. Discover the cathedral built on the ruins of the Temple of Athena and admire dramatic, well-preserved theaters where Aeschylus plays were performed. By special invitation, Barone Beneventano will welcome you to his Baroque palazzo for a tour and light refreshments. In the early evening the captain hosts a welcome reception and dinner. B, L, R, D Thursday, October 4 PORTO EMPEDOCLE / AGRIGENTO Pindar called Agrigento the most beautiful city built by mortal men and the nearby ruins of the Valley of the Temples demonstrate why. The Temple of Concord, perhaps the best-preserved Greek temple in the world, inspired the UNESCO logo. B, L, D Friday, October 5 TRAPANI / SEGESTA Explore Segesta s splendid Doric temple, strangely unfinished, whose columns are said to produce organ-like tones on windy days. Later you may visit either Erice a hilltop medieval town whose Norman castle sits atop the ruins of a temple of Venus or Mazara del Vallo, to Trapani, photo by Michele Naro see its 2,400-year-old, sevenfoot bronze statue the Dancing Satyr, rescued from the sea by fishermen in B, L, D Saturday, October 6 PALERMO Sicily s capital of Palermo was the envy of Europe under the Normans, whose enlightened rule produced the golden mosaics you will see in the 12th-century Palatine Chapel, described by Guy de Maupassant as the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of. After lunch on board, drive to Monreale to admire the brilliant mosaics in the magnificent Norman cathedral before a special reception at Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed. 5 Sunday, October 7 LIPARI (AEOLIAN ISLANDS) Early this morning sail through the Aeolian archipelago, volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily. Tender ashore to Lipari, which has known uninterrupted occupation since the Neolithic Age. The Archaeological Museum within the fortress walls boasts a superb collection of artifacts, including extraordinary masks from this and other islands. Visit the medieval walled city of Mdina, Malta s old capital, and in quaint Rabat, explore the newly reopened Wignacourt Museum, containing a labyrinth of Hypogea, art galleries, and relics from the Knights of Malta. Also, see the Domus Romana, a first-century B.C. Roman house with exquisite mosaics; and discover the Neolithic Temple of Hagar Qim. At St. John s Co- Cathedral, view Caravaggio s masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, and see tapestries and armor at the Palace of the Grand Masters. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to Harvard Alumni Travels and are subject to a $500 per person non-refundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual.
